Update: Google’s market dominance has been due to the company’s continuous innovation in its search engine, not by exclusionary conduct that stifle competitors like Microsoft’s Bing, the company’s lead attorney said in his opening statement in the landmark antitrust trial on Tuesday.
John E. Schmidtlein, lead attorney for Google, said that Microsoft failed to win over consumers with Bing because it did “invest, innovate and prioritize the development of search.” He said that Microsoft, having been beaten in the market, chose instead to focus on its Windows operating software.
The Justice Department and state plaintiffs claim that Google’s deals to become the default browser on search engines and phones have given it an unfair advantage over rivals.
But Schmidtlein said that browers like Mozilla and Apple conducted competitions on which search engine would be the default and that Google won “on the merit.” Apple’s Safari,...

San Francisco, Aug 8 (Ians) The mega $5 billion Google lawsuit over ‘incognito mode’ tracking via Chrome browser is a step closer to trial after a judge in the US rejected the tech giant’s request for summary judgment.
Judge Yvonne Gonzalez-Rogers in a California court on Monday denied Google’s push for summary judgment in the lawsuit, which claimed the tech giant is tracking and collecting data even when people use the private ‘Incognito’ mode on its Chrome browser.
Google Chrome’s ‘Incognito’ mode gives users the choice to browse the internet without their activities being saved to either browser or devices.
However, the judge pointed to statements in the Chrome privacy notice, Privacy Policy, Incognito Splash Screen, and Search & Browse Privately Help page about how incognito mode limits the information stored or how people can control the information they share, reports The Verge.

The Indian parliament has passed the Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill, which aims to curb piracy that causes losses of INR200 billion ($2.4 billion) to the film industry, according to government estimates. Those found guilty of film piracy by way of camcording in theaters or unauthorized copying and online transmission and exhibition of a pirated copy of any film will now face punishment of minimum three months imprisonment and a fine of $3,650, which can be extended up to three years imprisonment and fine up to 5% of the audited gross production cost.
The bill also introduces age-based categories of certification by further sub-dividing the existing UA category into seven years (UA 7+), 13 years (UA 13+) and 16 years (UA 16+), instead of 12 years. These age-based markers are recommendatory only, meant for the parents or guardians to consider whether their children should view a film. San Francisco, July 25 (Ians) Tech giant Microsoft is testing Bing’s artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot on Google Chrome and Safari.“We are flighting access to Bing Chat in Safari and Chrome to select users as part of our testing on other browsers,” Caitlin Roulston, Microsoft’s director of communications, said in a statement to The Verge.
“We are excited to expand access to even more users once our standard testing procedures are complete.”
It seems that there are some limitations to using Bing Chat on Chrome and Safari.
For instance, users can only type 2,000-word prompts, as compared to the 4,000-word limit that the company provides when using Bing Chat on Edge.
The chatbot’s communication with users will also restart after five turns rather than 30.
Microsoft has also introduced a dark option for Bing Chat in addition to a wider rollout across other browsers.

New Delhi, April 4 (Ians) The Indian cyber agency has issued warnings for some Apple products in the country, saying that users must upgrade their devices to the latest watchOS, tvOS, and macOS versions to safeguard their personal data.
According to Cert-In, multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Apple products which could allow an attacker to bypass privacy preferences, execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges, gain access to sensitive information, and spoof user interface on the targeted system.
On Macs, the vulnerabilities lie in Apple’s proprietary Safari web browser.
Cert-In said that the flaw exists due to “improper state management” in the WebKit component.
Although there isn’t a warning for iPhone and iPad users, it is advisable to update devices.

Nat Wolff has been really famous a couple of times. The first was in 2007, when his show The Naked Brothers Band (based on his real-life musical group) became Nickelodeon’s most popular kids’ series — that was the kind of fame that got him bullied at his New York City middle school. Then, in 2015, he led Paper Towns, the big-screen adaptation of John Green’s blockbuster YA novel — that was the screaming-teen-girls-following-you-on-a-global-press-tour variety.
Now he’s preparing for the release of a series that features his first starring TV role — and a run alongside Parker Posey and Hari Nef in an off-Broadway adaptation of The Seagull/Woodstock, NY — and feeling further from those days than ever. “A couple of girls followed me home from rehearsals the other day, and it made me realize I barely think about being a child star,” says the 28-year-old over late-morning shrimp tacos in Times Square.

Twitch is hoping the next 12 months will be universally pleasant for its community. In a blog post, the company’s Chief Product Officer outlined his team’s plan for 2023. Here’s an overview of what Tom Verrilli had to say.
“More options to earn” are coming.
Verrilli said “growth” is Twitch’s “main focus” for 2023. The platform is looking to improve upon a year in which it paid out 1 billion to streamers. “In the first half of 2023, we’re launching products and tools that make it easier for you to earn without impacting growth,” Verrilli wrote, “while also improving many of our existing...

New Delhi, Jan 24 (Ians) Apple on Tuesday unveiled a new set of educational resources designed to help users take control of their data, as Data Privacy Day approaches on January 28.
To drive awareness about the importance of data privacy, Apple has also partnered with Apple TV+ Ted Lasso star Nick Mohammed in “A Day in the Life of an Average Person’s Data.”
“Privacy is built into all of Apple’s products and services from the ground up, from the moment users open their devices to every time they use an app,” according to the company.
Apple products and features include innovative privacy technologies designed to minimise how much user data anyone can access.
“This is why Safari throws trackers off the trail. It’s why the Health app keeps user records under wraps, and why Siri learns what the user needs rather than who they are,” said the tech giant.

New Delhi, Sep 14 (Ians) Apple has fixed fresh vulnerabilities in iOS and macOS, including a zero-day flaw being actively exploited by hackers.
The zero-day flaw, known as Cve-2022-32917, allows a malicious app to run arbitrary code on an affected device with kernel privileges, Apple said in a security update.
Apple fixed the bug in updates for iOS 15.7 and iPadOS 15.7, macOS Monterey 12.6 and macOS Big Sur 11.7.
Apple warned that it is aware that this flaw “may have been actively exploited”.
According to TechCrunch, this is the eighth zero-day vulnerability fixed by Apple this year.
In addition to these fixes, Apple also released a fix for a Safari browser flaw that could lead to address bar spoofing.
The security fixes were released along with iOS 16, which brings several security and privacy features, including support for Apple Passkeys and Lockdown Mode.

When it comes to courting, the Duggars have some pretty strict rules that don't even allow private texting — but what about FaceTime? In the Duggar family, most of the kids who are ready to start dating have started seeing someone relatively close by, whether it was a family friend like Austin Forsyth or Kendra Caldwell or someone who just lived within driving distance for weekend trips. But what happens when a couple doesn't live all that close together before they get hitched, like Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard? How do they keep in touch enough to start courting from two very different places? Well, apparently, they use FaceTime and Skype. But, like texting, it's not exactly a free-for-all. Just because they're not going out to eat and bringing a chaperone (or a few) along, it doesn't mean they're without supervision. After all, the Duggars do have cell phones, but they...

Apple, which has used its commitment to consumer privacy to distance itself from its Silicon Valley rivals, doubled down on privacy and security with the latest version of its Mac desktop operating system, dubbed “Mojave.”
Apple Senior Vice President Craig Federighi said new data protections in the macOS, which is due out this fall, will require apps to get a user’s permission before accessing the camera and microphone or peering at personal data in mail or messages.
“We believe your private data should stay private,” said Federighi, in a line that drew robust applause today’s keynote address to Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in San Jose.
The latest version of the Safari browser will come with intelligent tracking prevention to prevent companies from using “like” or “share” buttons to track users without their permission — that’s a direct shot at Facebook, whose privacy practices have come under fire.

YouTube TV is now available on Mozilla Firefox -- marking the first time that the live cable service can be consumed on a web browser other than Google's Chrome.
YouTube TV’s gradual exodus from the Google ecosystem was first spotted yesterday morning by Your Tech Explained, and subsequently confirmed on the YouTube TV help page. That said, these are the only two browsers on which YouTube TV can be consumed via desktops to date. While Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera, Microsoft Edge and other users are currently out of luck, YouTube says that it is currently “working to bring YouTube TV to more browsers in the future.”

Many parents have technology rules for their kids, but Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar are stricter than most, as you might imagine! So do the Duggars have cell phones? Can the kids use social media? And what about TV? We've got the answers below. In 2014, Jessa Duggar told the Times Free Press all the Duggar kids get a cell phone when they get their driver's licenses. But in a 2015 interview with Covenant Eyes Radio — a podcast run by the "Internet accountability" service Covenant Eyes — Michelle and Jim Bob said not all the kids get smartphones, and those who do get dumbed-down smartphones, so to speak. "Young men would have more of a struggle seeing bad stuff, so what we've done with the smartphones is that we've … actually locked out Safari and any Internet search at all, and then we've just had basic apps," Jim Bob said. "We have emails and...

YouTube is reportedly testing a picture-in-picture feature for web browsing -- meaning it would port to computers the very same mobile capability where users can browse YouTube while watching a minimized video at the bottom of their screens.
The feature is being piloted on both Chrome and Safari browsers among a small user subset, reports 9 To 5 Google, which notes that the one user on its team who is seeing the feature happens to be a YouTube Red subscriber. It is unclear if the feature would be exclusive to YouTube Red -- which offers premium programming, no ads, and background viewing for $10 per month.

The macabre ultra-luxury sport of ‘canned’ trophy hunting in Africa comes under unflinching scrutiny in a documentary to make your blood boil
Trophy is a documentary about the highly commodified and macabre ultra-luxury sport of “canned” trophy hunting, in which legally restricted big-game hunting events in various African countries are auctioned off for colossal sums to rich people, often from the United States. These smug types want to play at being the great white hunter but have everything laid on for them, so they get an easy kill.
Just as with Safari, Ulrich Seidl’s recent documentary about the same subject, it is impossible to watch this without boiling with rage as these grotesque, pampered beta-males preen themselves over the animals’ corpses, occasionally blubbering sentimentally. The film has a stomach-turning scene at a hunters’ convention held at the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas (the site of the recent mass shooting).

As we make our way deeper and deeper into the Fall Festival season, some of the highlights from festivals earlier in the year are finally arriving in theaters. Be it the Safdie Brothers Cannes-stealing Good Time or Eliza Hittman’s Sundance stunner Beach Rats some of the spring’s most talked about festival pictures are just now making their way into theaters around the country. But what about those that went relatively unspoken of? There are some true discoveries to be had.
One of those discoveries is the newest film from Narco Cultura director Shaul Schwarz and co-director Christina Clusiau, entitled Trophy. As one could gather from the title, the film focuses its lens on the world of animal conservation in an age where more and more animals inch closer and closer to extinction. We watch as people try to help nurture animals and their populations back to life as...

If Ulrich Seidl’s “Safari” didn’t depress you enough, there’s another documentary about big-game hunting on the way: “Trophy.” Shaul Schwarz and Christina Clusiau’s film appeared to strong reviews at Sundance earlier this year — our own Jude Dry said that it “unearths layers of an issue much more complex than even the filmmakers initially believed” — and opens in theaters next month. Nikoclaus Geyrhalter's Over the Years (2015), which is receiving an exclusive global online premiere on Mubi, is showing from May 26 - June 25, 2017 as a Special Discovery. In the modern cinema, one cliché that has developed is the notion that “everyone is connected.” A kind of bastardized version of Marxist or Weberian social theory, this is a film structure that often observes a host of seemingly disparate individuals across the majority of the movie’s running time, only to bring them together at the end, supposedly at random, with some sort of cataclysmic event. It could be a car crash, a sinking ship, a bank robbery, or some natural disaster, but the point is clear: no one in the film was put there by chance. The “random” end was preordained, and everything before it has been working up unavoidably to that conclusive moment. The less said about these sorts of films, the better.

This year’s True/False Film Fest will hopefully be remembered as Claire Simon’s coming out party. The master French director received a rare three-film retrospective at the Columbia, Missouri festival that collectively highlighted her endless curiosity for life’s spectrum of emotions and anxieties. Within the tight confines of a playground or classroom her inquisitive camera never stops searching for something new, all the while quietly dissecting hierarchies of power and judgment. Comparisons to the great Frederick Wiseman are natural, but Simon’s films always leave room for bits of humor that help transcend the coldness of institutional mechanisms.During a post-screening Q&A for The Graduation, Simon’s latest documentary that examines the intense admittance process for France’s prestigious film school La Fémis, the director described each student’s struggle as “a really big fight to be in the castle.” Dreams of prestige and success validate...

Hema Hema: Sing Me a Song While I WaitDear Fern,I'm so glad we could share the sheer exuberant pleasure of Justin Timberlake + The Tennessee Kids on an IMAX screen that gave J.T. the 30 foot high stature of a god: eat your heart out, Leni Riefenstahl! As you note, this infectious concert documentary by Jonathan Demme resoundingly describes Timberlake's appeal in thundering audio-visual terms: boyish charisma, guileless performing pleasure, and a remarkable sharing of his musical credit (so much of it studio-finessed, optimized of appropriation of other music and styles) with a veritable community of producers, musicians, backing vocalists, dancers and more. There's one incredible shot (among many) in this beautiful film of the entire collection of performers playing a song that's frankly mediocre—but the camera tracks along the whole band on stage, Timberlake one of many, all of whose smiles are genuine, all who sing along...
