If the idea of a live-action Minions movie makes you shudder, you’re not the only one.
Chris Renaud, who directed the first two and fourth films in the Despicable Me franchise, shot down the potential of a live-action treatment of the mischievous banana-loving helpers.
“God, I hope not,” Renaud said bluntly when asked by Film Hounds if there was a possibility of Illumination and Universal exploring live-action movies within the franchise. “That’s my answer.”
Studios like Disney have found box-office success in remaking animated classics, such as 2019’s The Lion King and Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast (2017) and Alice in Wonderland (2010), all of which have crossed the $1 billion box office threshold. Upcoming films like Mufasa: The Lion King and a live-action Moana hope to recreate that profitability.

Felonious Gru and his brood return to the big screen July 3 in Illumination and Universal Pictures’ Despicable Me 4, seven years after its predecessor and two years after spinoff prequel Minions: The Rise of Gru.
Co-directors Chris Renaud and Patrick Delage touched down at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in mid-June for its French premiere, prior to the movie’s launch in the U.S.
It was a special occasion for Renaud, who still gets goosebumps at the memory of the audience’s rousing response to the screening of the original Despicable Me movie there in 2010.
Talking to Deadline the next day, Renaud admits he nearly teared up while on stage to introduce the new film.
“I could see it going that way, so I kind of talked myself out of it… it’s been a long time that I’ve been working with these characters, so you do...

There's less than a month to go until Despicable Me 4 arrives in theaters, and Illumination has released a new promo which takes a shot of Black Adam star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Warner Bros.' tax write-offs, and the MCU.
The pro wrestler and actor vowed to change the "hierarchy of power" in the DC Extended Universe with the 2022 movie, only for it to flop at the box office and bomb with critics and fans alike. From there, Johnson's plans to take over the franchise failed and he was promptly ousted when James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios.
As for the 100-year slate of "Mega Minions" movies, it's a tongue-in-cheek dig at Marvel Studios and its habit of revealing slates of movies and TV shows years before they're released.
It's all meant in good fun, though we're sure Johnson doesn't appreciate being made fun of in this way.

Update: It may be a stretch, but we could coin a new phrase and call this the cat days of spring. To wit: Sony/Alcon’s The Garfield Movie, which began early overseas release last month, took the No. 1 spot for Hollywood on the domestic, international and global charts this frame.
The offshore session in 60 markets was $27.1M, lifting worldwide to $152.2M. The voracious kitty had paws aplenty with overseas markets down just 3% from last weekend. The international box office cume is now $100.7M.
In China, Alcon partnered with Stars Collective to distribute the film via China Film Group and Alibaba Pictures and opened to $8.2M, starting from Saturday. In two days, Garfield has surpassed the lifetimes of Puss In Boots: The Last Wish and Migration.

The Despicable Me movies always do very well at the box office (even if the reviews haven't remained quite as positive), so it came as no surprise that a fourth instalment in Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment's animated franchise was on the way, and a new trailer and poster have now been released.
Though Gru will appear, the Minions have really become the main focus of these movies, and there's plenty of fun to be had with the little yellow fellas in this latest teaser, which sees several "volunteers" transformed into super-powered Mega-Minions.
One gains stretchy abilities like Mr. Fantastic, another is a clear not to The Thing, and there's also a Minion with Cyclops-like optic blasts.
Check out the new trailer and poster below, and let us know if you plan on catching this one on the big screen.

After debuting early last weekend, Universal’s The Fall Guy expanded to 78 overseas markets during its sophomore session, adding $25.4M for a running total of $36.9M at the international box office. That’s in line with Bullet Train and above The Lost City at the same point in release. Globally, the David Leitch-directed action romance is at $65.4M.
This is a fun picture with positive scores and exits so there’s hope for some legs here and playability throughout upcoming holidays. Still, an expensive movie, it came in slightly below projections domestically.
Internationally, the UK was a No. 1 debut with a strong $4.4M from 1,400 screens. Odeon was the top-performing circuit, and Everyman registered a 9% share, 3.1 points higher than their average for the year. Performance across 51 IMAX screens made up 7.6% of the total. The weekend result is well above Bullet Train and The Lost City. Monday is a holiday.
Mexico opened to $2.5M at No.

Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” scratched up $22 million in its international box office debut. It’s currently only playing in 18 markets, roughly 35% of its eventual overseas footprint, so those ticket sales represent a promising start for the family film.
“The Garfield Movie” doesn’t open in the U.S. and Canada until Memorial Day weekend on May 24. When it does land in domestic theaters, it’s projected to earn $35 million over the long weekend and will compete for first place with director George Miller’s “Mad Max” prequel “Furiosa.”
Overseas, “The Garfield Movie” enjoyed the biggest start in Spain with $3.2 million over five days, followed by Brazil with $2.2 million, Italy with $1.6 million and Peru with $1.3 million. According to the studio, revenues for the film are pacing 76% above fellow kid-friendly film “DC League of Super Pets” (which eventually earned $113 million internationally) and 41% higher than “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish...

CinemaCon attendees got an extended clip from Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 at Universal’s presentation Wednesday in Las Vegas.
In it, Gru (Steve Carell) teams with the villainess Poppy (Joey King) to steal a honey badger from a castle/private school. Two Minions and Gru’s baby son Junior are in tow. Calamity ensues as the honey badger awakes and creates havoc, with Gru getting hit in the butt with a tranquilizer shot.
Illumination Boss Chris Meledandri introduced the clip today at the Caesars Colosseum, thanking exhibitors for the sleeper success of his animation studio’s Migration ($293 million in box office).
“In case of any doubt, our commitment to produce original animation film remains steadfast,” said Meledandri.

There’ll be some happy holidays on Prime Video in December, as the streamer’s seasonal offerings hope to keep the fires warm in your home this month!
As such, there are quite a few new original holiday movies coming to the service. At the beginning of the month, Eddie Murphy stars in Candy Cane Lane. In this film, the Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America star plays a determined man who is willing to go above and beyond to win the annual Christmas home decoration contest in his neighborhood – even if it means making a very magical deal.
The DC universe will also be getting festive in December thanks to Merry Little Batman, an animated feature that sees Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, stumble upon a villainous plot on Christmas eve, one that may give him a chance to save the day when his dad isn’t around.

Warner Bros/DC’s The Flash sped into 78 overseas markets this weekend, grossing $75M, below the $85M-$95M we saw coming into the frame. With domestic’s slow-crawl three-day included, that makes for a $139M global opening. This is lower than projections, with general audiences not rushing out to see the deeper universe pic.
As we noted coming into the frame, there was a question mark over how deeply the tabloid headlines surrounding star Ezra Miller have seeped into overseas awareness. The initial audience was ultimately more fanboy and male-skewing. There’s an emotional story linked with The Flash/Barry Allen’s mother in the film, but females didn’t come out. Reaction was mixed. China had a great 9.3 score on Maoyan while France’s AlloCiné score is a not great 3 out of 5 stars and critics are low there at 2.5. Some UK reviews are on the low end as well.

I am fascinated, nay, obsessed, with seeing what ends up on the Netflix top 10 lists each week, because it is truly the wild west of popularity rankings. People are frequently puzzled by what ends up on the top of the charts, because a lot of the time, the movies aren't what we would consider "good" by most critical standards. Just as an example, the "Twilight" franchise scooped up five of the 10 spots one week, proving that Americans were reliving their Twi-hard glory days and marathoning the series. In 2020, "The Secret Life of Pets 2" was on and...

Netflix and Universal Filmed Entertainment Group are extending an agreement that will give the streaming giant exclusive rights in the U.S. to the media company’s animated feature films.

China’s two new propaganda films topped the box office over their first weekend in theaters, but it appears that the politically correct content may not prove popular enough to drive sales at blockbuster levels.
Most of the biggest local blockbusters set to hit China over the rest of the year are propaganda titles. Though analysts believe that China will keep its crown as the world’s largest film market this year, some question whether its annual gross may suffer from a surplus of “main melody” political films and fewer Hollywood tentpoles as the U.S. exhibition sector wobbles back on its feet post-covid.
China’s cumulative box office this weekend was just $44.9 million, down significantly from the comparable weekend of 2019, when Maoyan figures show it hit $120 million. Those heights were made possible by blockbusters “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and Herman Yau Hong Kong actioner “The White Storm 2: Drug Lords,...

Even as “F9” opened as an international theatrical hit, Universal made its streaming priorities clear: “The Boss Baby: Family Business” will debut day-and-date July 2 in theaters and on Peacock while a theater-only release is set for the same day in the rest of the world.
The original 2017 DreamWorks Animation release, “The Boss Baby,” grossed $175 million in North America and double that in the rest of the world. It was previously scheduled as a theater-only release September 17. Universal’s theatrical releases fall under an established Premium VOD deal that allows for PVOD showings after 17 or 31 days, depending on opening gross. This includes revenue sharing with at least some exhibitors.
This announcement indicates that whatever the intricacies of that agreement, Universal retained the right to play films of their choosing day and date via streaming, with theaters then free to play at their choice.

Kevin Hart is joining Cate Blanchett in the cast of “Borderlands,” a movie adaptation of the popular video game.
Hart will play Roland, a skilled ex-soldier-turned-mercenary, in the Lionsgate film. Eli Roth, whose resume includes “The House With a Clock in its Walls” and Bruce Willis-led action thriller “Death Wish,” is directing “Borderlands.”
“I’m thrilled to be working with Kevin,” said Roth. “‘Borderlands’ is a different kind of role for him, and we are excited to thrill audiences with a side of Kevin they’ve never seen before. He’s going to be an amazing Roland.”
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group President Nathan Kahane adds, “Kevin has been behind some of the world’s biggest blockbusters, and our source material is inspired by one of the world’s best-selling video games. We love the way our filmmaking team has adapted this story and we couldn’t be in better creative hands.

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s “The Eric Andre Show!” It’s been four long years since Season 4 of Adult Swim’s wild talk show parody premiered, but the wait for the series’ fifth season is nearly over. Adult Swim has released the trailer for “The Eric Andre Show” Season 5, and the tease suggests that the lengthy gap between seasons hasn’t dulled the show’s ludicrous and entertaining edge.
While the new trailer doesn’t tease any guests or man-on-the-street pranks, it offers a look at the show’s colorful new set. Andre is also seen strangling a clown, crashing a motorcycle into his desk, ripping his own head off and scoring a soccer goal with it, getting shot repeatedly. In other words, business as usual.
“The Eric Andre Show,” which stars Andre as a psychotic and inept talk show host alongside co-host Hannibal Buress, has gained a cult following...

A surprising Kevin Hart movie is dominating Netflix today. The Secret Life of Pets 2 isn’t a new release on the streaming service, as it’s been available for a while now, but for some reason, viewers are loving the 2019 animated flick from Illumination at the moment, as it’s trending on Netflix’s Top 10 most-watched films list, coming in at #6.
A sequel to the smash hit 2016 original, Pets 2 features an all-star cast voicing the animals of New York. Most of the players from the first film returned to reprise their roles for this one, including Kevin Hart as standout character Snowball, a rabbit who dreams of being a superhero. Other returnees include Jenny Slate, Lake Bell, Eric Stonestreet, Dana Carvey and Hannibal Buress.
A big change, though, is the lead. Patton Oswald took over as main character Max the dog, after Louis C.K. portrayed him the first time around.

AMC Theatres and Universal’s new deal allowing films to be released for video on-demand after just 17 days in theaters could not only help both theaters and studios but also completely overhaul the business model the film industry has run on for decades. But that depends on how the rest of Hollywood responds to it — which so far remains unclear.
“In an era of increasing competition from a growing number of streaming options, we continue to believe exhibitors need to evolve and become increasingly flexible with not only the movie-going environment they provide to consumers, but also with the windowing options they provide to studios,” B. Riley Fbr analyst Eric Wold wrote in a note to clients. “While this agreement is only between AMC and Universal, we would not be surprised to see other ‘option’ agreements entered into between the remainder of the major studios and the leading exhibition chains...

Comcast topped Wall Street analysts’ forecasts for the Covid-19-hit second quarter, with total revenue slipping 12% from a year ago to $23.7 billion and adjusted earnings per share reaching 69 cents.
While the earnings figure declined from 78 cents in the year-ago quarter, it was far higher than the consensus expectation of 55 cents. The company’s shares, which have recently rallied to their highest level since February, gained ground in pre-market trading.
Revenue at NBCUniversal dropped 25% in the quarter, to $6.1 billion. Advertising, as expected, took a major hit, declining 27%. Distribution revenue fell 15%, with the more moderate decline caused by credits given to some of the company’s regional sports networks due to games not played by pro sports teams during Covid-19.
Universal’s film operation saw revenue fall 18% to $1.2 billion, with pandemic-related theater closures delivering pain but licensing helping offset those losses. The company called out premium video on demand contributions from Trolls...

It is good news of sorts that the first official Academy Awards screener that was mailed to members this week, “First Cow,” is directed by a woman, Kelly Reichhardt, and features Asian actor Orion Lee. Diversity counts more than ever these days. The filmmaker’s minimalist style usually caters more to the Independent Spirit crowd as well as such international festivals including Cannes and Venice when it comes to cinematic honors. Her previous movies include “Old Joy,” “Wendy and Lucy,” “Meek’s Cutoff” and “Certain Women,” the last three starring Michelle Williams.
The 2021 Oscar nominations won’t be announced until mid-March and the 93rd ceremony won’t take place until April 24 due to delayed productions and constantly moving opening dates because of the coronavirus pandemic. But the well-reviewed “First Cow” had its premiere at Telluride Film Festival last year and opened theatrically on March 6 to a strong first weekend. But the...

Korean hit #Alive kicked up another $2.2M this weekend, holding well throughout the mid-weeks, but with an overall 63% Friday-Saturday-Sunday dip from the comparable weekend days last session. The timely thriller that’s set against the backdrop of a city in lockdown due to a virus has now grossed $11M. It’s a continued indication that moviegoers want something new, and in cases of a strong local industry, they’re also enjoying homegrown fare. Still, not much is going to rock the international box office until Hollywood starts releasing fresh titles.
A question has been raised as to whether the studios could release big new movies overseas without the biggest domestic cities given the situation in the U.S. is still dire. While international makes up the lion’s share of receipts (73% in 2019), a finance source explains that an event picture generally goes out on more than 30,000 screens worldwide — those screens are hardly available at present.
