- A philanthropist meddles in the lives of newly-married couples in an attempt to relive his past.
- An aged philanthropist reunites with the pregnant daughter of his close friends who tragically died in an accident that he feels responsible for causing. His inner demons have driven him to abuse drugs which causes the reunion to become strained between the daughter and her husband. His story is told through flashbacks to the day of the tragic accident.
- Francis "Franny" Watts is very rich but the source of his wealth is never explained. In a nice house outside Philadelphia, He looks over the blueprints for his new children's hospital and complains that it needs more color so it can be a happy place. After a conversation with his best friend Bobby, a doctor, and Bobby's wife Mia, he goes into a room where Olivia, who he nicknamed "Poodles" is packing to leave, and he hugs her as if she is his own daughter. Mia jokes, "Get your own daughter."
Bobby is driving a station wagon through a wooded area and Mia and Franny are with him. They seem to be having a good time until Franny's behavior seems to be distracting Bobby and another vehicle crashes into them. Franny is then shown in a hospital bed hooked up to numerous wires and tubes.
Five years later, Franny is in a large and luxurious but kind of depressing old-style home with servants nearby and he looks like a wizard with a beard and long hair. The camera shows bottles of hydrocodone and hydromorphone. Franny goes to his hospital, walking with a cane, and he gives a cheerful greeting to everyone. Franny visits Toby, a young patient who wants to go home. Franny pretends he can make that happen, and he covers himself and Toby with what he calls a tent and says they are going to escape. When Toby says he looks like a wizard, Franny decides to cut his hair and make his beard neater.
Olivia, who hasn't had much contact since what happened to her parents and regrets this, calls Franny and says she wants to meet with him. She is married to Luke, a doctor, and visibly pregnant. At an event, Franny introduces Luke to the hospital staff and says he will be working there. Franny sings "My Girl" outside along with a band and the couple dance. While the video remains cheerful, the audience hears ominous music and the video changes to nighttime with Franny looking depressed in his car, then he is back at home. Franny spills a bottle of liquid. Occasionally, flashbacks are shown of the car and the occupants after the accident. Franny is often shown drinking.
Later, Franny, Luke and Olivia go out to the country and they stop at the house where Olivia and her parents lived at the movie's start. Franny says he has bought it for them and they can live and raise a child there instead of in North Philly. The couple wonder what is so wrong with North Philly. Franny asks a reluctant Olivia to go inside the house and he tells Luke if he still has any medical debt. Franny will pay it for him. Luke doesn't want to let Franny do this, but Franny is insistent. The couple eventually agree to move into the house and Franny's staff helps with the move.
In one scene out in the country, Franny and Luke go to a tree and dig up a box which contains a fancy bottle. The men drink its contents but Franny doesn't even remember what it is.
Franny asks Luke to attend a fund-raiser and asks him if he has a tux. Luke doesn't, so Franny arranges for Armando to make him one. Franny then asks Luke for a prescription for a medication he ran out of. He claims the bottle he is holding was spilled by accident and he needs more. Luke says he can't help, and Franny laughs and tells him he passed the test.
The fund-raiser is at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Olivia is not happy and won't join the others, but Franny and Luke have a good time and leave for an adult entertainment venue. Franny introduces Molly. Although the credits show a Molly, Luke realizes it is not the girl but what she is holding. Still, both men are shown high and having a good time as they ride around the city. At home, Olivia calls Luke but gets voice mail. The men sleep in the same bed at Franny's place. Franny, recalling the accident, keeps saying it was his fault and apologizing to Bobby.
In one of the flashbacks, Franny climbs out of the roof of the car, which is beside a creek, and pulls his friends out but it is not certain they are still alive. Franny yells for help.
One night Franny goes in a 24-hour pharmacy and tells the pharmacist what he needs. The pharmacist says he needs to contact his doctor but Franny says he doesn't want to call the man at this time of night. The pharmacist still refuses to help and Franny protests but finally agrees to leave without his medication.
Franny visits his hospital and gets upset when he can't see Toby, though it is the middle of the night. Luke is there and once again, he refuses to do anything for Franny, who is behaving erratically. Luke finally gets Franny into a stairwell and tells him he needs help. Franny reminds Luke what he has done for the young man and Luke doesn't care. Luke has never wanted to feel obligated to him.
Olivia and Luke decide to move out of the house.
In another scene, Franny visits his doctor Sam and asks that he renew the prescription. Sam says he can't do that or he will get in trouble. Franny said Sam did this to him, so he is obligated. Sam will only give Franny drugs that will help him stop taking the pain killers, which he doesn't need for pain any more, and to help him with his anxiety.
Franny wanders the city and ends up hurting his hand (it can be assumed intentionally, so he will get drugs). When he goes to a hospital he is treated by a female Asian doctor who wants to give him ibuprofen. He protests but she won't give him anything stronger.
Franny's behavior improves and he has an unpleasant meeting with Olivia, who is on her way out of his place when she realizes she is in labor. Franny gets her to the hospital, where a guard thinks he is there once again to get drugs. No, he says, Olivia is in the emergency room. Luke just happens to be working and he joins his wife.
After baby Robert is born, Franny gets to visit and even hold the baby. There are some nice scenes with Robert and his parents, and it is suggested that Franny is going to make an effort to get better. In the last scene before the credits Franny is shaving off his beard.
