When director Todd Field sat down and wrote his film “Tár,” there was only one option to play the title character. As he described to IndieWire in an interview, the film wouldn’t have been made if Cate Blanchett hadn’t agreed to take the part of lauded conductor Lydia Tár. “I had no backup plan,” he told IndieWire. “I’d met Cate 10 years ago and I knew coming out of that meeting that I had just been in conversation with somebody that had one of the great brains I ever met. And it was someone that I was really, really desperate to be able to collaborate with.”
It might seem silly to hinge your entire film on the participation of a single actor; the Australian Blanchett doesn’t share any notable biographical details with the fictional American conductor that makes her casting meaningful in a meta sense. Once you see her extraordinary performance,...

Steven Soderbergh directs a supernatural thriller with a unique perspective twist. Here’s the first trailer for Presence, starring Lucy Liu and Julia Fox:
Director Steven Soderbergh has been on a roll recently, having released at least one film a year since 2017 and sometimes two. These have included Logan Lucky, Unsane, High Flying Bird, The Laundromat, Let Them All Talk, No Sudden Move, Kimi and Magic Mike’s Last Dance.
His latest film, Presence, has a unique twist to it: the story’s shot from the perspective of a supernatural entity that stalks an ordinary suburban family. After debuting at Sundance early this year, the movie was picked up for distribution by Neon – the company that recently enjoyed a huge hit with serial killer horror, Longlegs.
According to Deadline, The synopsis reads as follows:
A family moves into a suburban house and becomes convinced they’re not alone, but rather surrounded by a mysterious entity.

Whilst Steven Soderbergh is already hard at work on his upcoming Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett starring spy drama Black Bag, we've all been sat here waiting patiently for the prolific filmmaker's most recent film Presence ever since it premiered at Sundance earlier this year. Today, we got a chance to feel Soderbergh's horror-thriller's, er, well, presence for the first time as American distributor Neon released an eerie first teaser trailer for the Lucy Liu starring movie. Check it out below:
Well that teaser and us have something in common — we're both speechless! Following in the vein of recent cryptic teasers for movies like Longlegs, Cuckoo, and The Substance (that the first two of those are also Neon-distributed features is surely no coincidence), this one really doesn't give anything away at all. But even though you may look at this foreboding, forty-second slow pull back from a still suburban...

Steven Soderbergh’s new film, Presence, has received a mysterious teaser trailer ahead of its theatrical release on January 17th, 2025. Watch it below.
Presence is a psychological thriller that centers around the Payne family — portrayed by Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Eddy Maday, and Callina Liang — who unwittingly move into a haunted house sold to them by a real estate agent played by Julia Fox.
The teaser itself doesn’t give much insight into the movie. Instead, it lists some of Soderbergh’s past films, including Traffic, Contagion, and Magic Mike before slowly panning around a suburban home.
Similarly, the logline simply says, “A family moves into a suburban house and becomes convinced they’re not alone.”
Directed by Soderbergh, Presence was penned by David Koepp, best known for his work on Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible, and Spider-Man. West Mulholland also stars. The film’s theatrical release will come one year...

“Presence” will soon be felt.
Steven Soderbergh’s highly anticipated ghost story, written by David Koepp and starring Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan and Julia Fox, will be released theatrically by Neon in January 2025. The studio released a brand-new teaser for the psychological thriller on Wednesday, which you can watch below.
The approach that the teaser takes is nifty — it just lists off some of Soderbergh’s past masterpieces, while a camera slowly moves from outside of a suburban house to inside. That’s it. The implication is clear: “Presence” is an event, as only the second Soderbergh movie to be released theatrically since 2018’s “Unsane” and the other film (“Magic Mike’s Last Dance”) was made for streaming before being changed at the last minute to a theatrical release. That really does make “Presence” special.

11 years on from very publicly — and very prematurely — announcing his retirement, prolific American auteur Steven Soderbergh continues to be one of the biggest and busiest filmmaker in the business. And whilst the Ocean's movie mastermind's most recent effort, horror-thriller Presence, has yet to officially hit cinemas following its Sundance premiere earlier this year, that hasn't stopped ol' Soderbergh from setting a release date for his next film. Per Deadline's reporting, Soderbergh's Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender starring spy drama Black Bag — which we first found out about back in January — is set to hit cinemas on 14 March, 2025.
Written by Soderbergh's Kimi collaborator and Jurassic Park screenwriting legend David Koepp, precious little is known about Black Bag's plot as of yet — although we'd confidently hazard a guess that the title's not just Soderbergh reminding himself which week's bins to put out. What we do know however is that the...

Steven Soderbergh's upcoming film has been inspired by Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour. The 61-year-old director is "fascinated" by the success of the pop mega star and explained that the record-breaking concerts have influenced a new movie that he is in the early stages of developing.Speaking to Variety at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, Steven said: "I have been thinking about a project in which I analyse large scale, cooperative endeavours that work. Airports. Why do airports work? Or AA?"You look at the Taylor Swift concert, at this whole tour and it works. So why can't we figure out Syria or any other conflict? "Humour is a great delivery system for an idea and nothing lights up the brain like music, so this project better be funny and there should be some musical component as a way to open people up. We’ve said it a million times, but it’s true—Steven Soderbergh is perhaps the most prolific American filmmaker of our lifetime. Just look at the last almost-decade. Since 2017, he’s directed nine feature films. That’s more than one film per year, on average. And he’s not slowing down anytime soon. Even though his most recent film, “Presence,” hasn’t even been distributed yet, Soderbergh is already hard at work on his next film, “Black Bag,” which stars Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender.

Steven Soderbergh is taking a page from Taylor Swift’s playbook.
“People laugh that there is a college class being taught about her and I go, ‘There should be,'” the director tells Variety during a roundtable interview at Karlovy Vary Film Festival. “What she is doing, the way she is doing it… Nobody has ever done this before. The amount of control she has taken over. She is relentless.”
He continues, “These stories about doing the whole show on a treadmill, just to make sure she can do it?! It’s a success story and I am fascinated by that. [Screenwriter] David Koepp took his daughter to see the show and said, ‘You cannot believe what it’s like to be there.’ I would go if I could. There aren’t any tickets! But I watched the film.”
The Eras Tour is also on his mind when developing new work.

Pierce Brosnan, Mark Hamill and Ben Kingsley are set to bring Jesus Christ’s adversaries to life in an animated feature inspired by a posthumously published story from Charles Dickens.
The three performers will portray villains as part of the star-studded voice cast for director Seong-ho “Jay” Jang’s The King of Kings. Hailing from South Korea-based animation house Mofac Animation, the film is loosely based on The Life of Our Lord, the Dickens short story that was published decades after the author’s death and focuses on the life and times of Christ.
Brosnan voices Pontius Pilate, the biblical figure who ordered Jesus’ crucifixion. Hamill will tackle the role of King Herod, who is described in the Bible as ordering the Massacre of the Innocents shortly after Jesus’ birth. Kingsley is taking on the part of High Priest Caiaphas, who presided over the Sanhedrin trial of Jesus.

Warner Bros. has emerged as the victor for Ryan Coogler’s next feature film.
Coogler wrote the script and will direct, with Michael B. Jordan starring. Coogler is also producing via his production company, Proximity Media. Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian are also producing.
The acquisition caps off three weeks of intense interest from movie companies, with Universal and Warners ending up as the final two battling for the crown.
Part of package’s appeal was the reteaming of Coogler and Jordan, a combo that has proven to be a winning one, both artistically and financially. Coogler has frequently worked with the actor on projects such as the Black Panther movies, as well as Creed and Fruitvale Station.

Exclusive: Focus Features has won a bidding battle for Black Bag, a package for a spy thriller film that Steven Soderbergh will direct this summer in Europe from a David Koepp script, with Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender attached to star. Casey Silver and Greg Jacobs are producing.
This marks the second deal this week for Soderbergh and a Koepp-scripted project. The director made a triumphant return to Sundance, where 35 years ago the $1 million deal for sex, lies, & videotape changed the game. His ghost story Presence sold to Neon in a splashy deal with multiple bidders in an auction that followed the film’s premiere earlier this week.
Black Bag was dispersed to studios in the same time span. The deal was brokered by CAA and by Michael Sugar’s Sugar23.
No numbers yet on this package, but it continues to be the best way for talent to be in the driver’s seat.
