It's been a difficult year for Lionsgate, but Borderlands stands out as the studio's biggest box office flop. Following a disastrous $9 million opening weekend, the movie concluded its month-long run at the box office with a dismal $31 million before limping on to Digital platforms.

With a production budget of $115 million and a $30 million marketing campaign - which saw fans of the hit series of games largely reject everything they were seeing - the studio has likely lost upwards of $114 million.

Lionsgate has now shared its second-quarter financial results (via GameFragger.com), singling out Borderlands as one of its biggest money-losers.

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said, "Within our television Group, our unscripted business is feeling the effects of a continuing market correction. In our film group, the poor box office performance of Borderlands, coupled with softer-than-anticipated results for other releases in the quarter, reflected an environment with less margin for error than ever before.

In what the company described as a ��disrupted and difficult year for our industry,” Lionsgate has reported “disappointing” second quarter financial results, with an operating loss of $88.6m on revenue of $948.6m.

The company’s studio business had an operating loss of $34.8m, compared to an operating income of $76m for the second quarter of the previous year. The motion picture segment of Lionsgate’s studio business produced a profit of $2.6m, compared to $67.5m the previous year. The television production segment showed a profit of $24.4m, compared to $63.2m.

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer was frank about the poor results of his studio at the box office recently, most notably “Borderlands,” which has shaped up to be one of the year’s biggest critical and commercial busts and led to the studio’s motion picture division generating a mere $2.6 million in profit for the quarter.

“Nearly everything that could go wrong did go wrong: it sat on the shelf for too long during the pandemic, and reshoots and rising interest rates took it outside the safety zone of our usual strict financial models,” Feltheimer said on an earnings call on Thursday.

Produced on a $120 million budget that was co-financed by Lionsgate with Avi Arad Productions, Picturestart, and 2K Games, “Borderlands” is an adaptation of the hit video game series of the same name and featured an ensemble cast that includes Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt and Jamie Lee Curtis.

“Borderlands,” Lionsgate’s star-studded video game adaptation, is standing out as one of the biggest bombs at the box office this year. The film budgeted at $115 million earned just $32.9 million globally, a “disaster” for the studio considering the high hopes the studio had to turn into a franchise based on the game series’ huge popularity.

Lionsgate released its second quarter financial results that follow the spinoff of the media giant’s studio business into a separately traded stock earlier this year.

The studio, led by CEO Jon Feltheimer, shrunk its first quarter net loss to $177.8 million, compared to a year-earlier $887.9 million loss then due to the impact of non-cash goodwill and intangible asset write downs and restructuring charges in the media networks division.

Lionsgate is the studio behind John Wick, The Hunger Games and other movie franchises and Feltheimer during prepared remarks made to Wall Street analysts on an after-market conference call said the latest financials come amid “continued industry disruption, the lingering effects of last year’s strikes and a disappointing theatrical box office performance.”

During the latest financial quarter, Lionsgate saw overall revenue falling to $948.6 million, which compares to a year-earlier $1.01 billion. The latest financial frame beat an analyst consensus of $921 million for second quarter revenues.

The first feature film from Abel Tesfaye — Aka The Weeknd — has secured distribution and unveiled its title.

The film from director and writer Trey Edward Shults (“Waves”) is called “Hurry Up Tomorrow” and will be released in theaters by Lionsgate. The studio announced on Monday that it secured worldwide theatrical distribution rights for the film, though no release date has been announced yet.

“Hurry Up Tomorrow” is described as a suspenseful, psychological thriller and a musical opus, designed as an extension of The Weeknd’s next album of the same name (that too is awaiting a formal release date). The album will be a companion piece to the film’s actual score, which was composed by Tesfaye and Daniel Lopatin.

The film stars Tesfaye alongside Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan and melds genres alongside its soundscapes. No synopsis was released.

Shults wrote and directed the film and is also an executive producer on the project.

“After The Devil Wears Prada, I couldn’t get a job, and I didn’t quite understand that, but that’s just the way it was,” Tucci said. “So I went and did stuff that I didn’t necessarily want to do, but I did it.”
