From the genre-defining classics A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream to such transgressive works as The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes to cult favorites like The People Under the Stairs and The Serpent and the Rainbow, Wes Craven’s reign of terror spanned not only decades but generations.
But there’s much more to the man than just horror movies. In Harker Press’ The Soul of Wes Craven, author Joseph Maddrey allows readers to see the entire person rather than just a collection of his work.
The Soul of Wes Craven is not the first biography on the master of horror, but it is the definitive one. In addition to a profusion of thoroughly-researched sources, Maddrey interviewed over 80 people from Craven’s life — from professional collaborators like Robert Englund, Heather Langenkamp, Alexandre Aja, and Patrick Lussier to family members, friends, and college classmates — for...

Modern day Horror Masters Alexandre Bustillo & Julien Maury are back at it again with another chilling feature, here to ruin your day and make your skin crawl. Entitled, The Soul Eater, this new venture from France’s most frightening duo investigates the disappearance of a several children and a small forest town’s relation to a disturbing boogeymen legend. In line with Bustillo & Maury’s reputation for Nsfl moments of Horror The Soul Eater is a punch in the gut, and a montage of violent, nightmare imagery filtered through the tropes and traits of a cop procedural.
Alexandre Bustillo & Julien Maury are two of my favorite horror filmmakers working today, always pushing themselves to do something different and show horror fans something they haven’t seen before. Audiences around the world couldn’t look away at the extremity on display in their debut feature Inside (2007) and their particular brand of...

Beyond Riverdale and the Archies there is this boarding school for girls Vandana Valley. It won’t be erroneous to call it The Valley Of the dolls.
The girls in the boarding school are young vivacious…, or perhaps, bindaas would be a better word… I am sure the young ladies of this cutely compelling series would like to known as bindaas.
Here’s a world so bindaas that the girls are allowed to check out boys’ …you know the world that rhymes with bindaas?
Ok ok. I am being coy. These teenaged pleasure seekers would probably think restrain to be sign of incorrigible fuddy-duddy-ness. But here is the thing: Big Girls Don’t Cry is not just an alibi for bad behaviour.
These girls are no rebels with a cause. They just won’t to be recognized for what they are, good, bad or lesbian. Yes, there is a strong same-sex angle,...

You don’t need to have lived in the proverbial middle of nowhere to understand the kind of terror Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury’s The Soul Eater mines from the fictional Roquenoix. As shot by Simon Roca, this remote hamlet in northeastern France isn’t a ghost town so much as a burial ground where humans and buildings alike are waiting to rot. A grandiose sanatorium once towered over the tree-shrouded hills, bringing in enough cash and tourists to fill the village’s coffers. But when a motorway was built across the valley, the tourists disappeared, the sanatorium was abandoned; and the few who stayed behind were left to wrestle with an ancestral legend and a series of murders that may or may not be connected with it.
The single most terrifying thing in The Soul Eater isn’t the titular devourer, but that spectral, lifeless town where its victims are stranded.

In the silent film era, the practice of show-don't-tell was a necessity. People packed movie houses all over the country to see moving pictures, not to read. Obviously, some text was vital, particularly if you were staging a soundless -- save for the in-house musical accompaniment -- adaptation of Shakespeare or a popular novel. But the purest visual experiences of the pre-talkie era were the films with the fewest subtitles. And these were, of course, comedies.
There were a number of brilliant physical comedians delighting audiences in the early part of the 20th century, but most will agree that the early masters of this medium were Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. Chaplin employed an elegant, sleight-of-hand magic that could touch the heart just as palpably as the funny bone, whereas Keaton earned gasps and laughs as he performed some of the most ingeniously conceived and effortlessly executed stunts in the history of cinema.

Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, owner of the ad-supported on-demand streamer Crackle, on Wednesday announced plans to acquire the struggling DVD-rental company Redbox in a 375 million deal that includes roughly 50 million in stock and the assumption of roughly 321 million in debt.
The all-stock transaction leaves Chicken Soup stockholders with about 76.5 of the combined company, while Redbox stockholders will own about 23.5. Redbox’s majority owner, Apollo Group Management, will own roughly 15 of Chicken Soup. The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2022, pending regulatory approval.
Redbox has struggled with the decline of the DVD and video game rental market as the company derived nearly 90 of its income from its 38,000 kiosks in groceries and drugstores nationwide. That decline was made worse during the pandemic, as revenues fell from 858 million in 2019 to just 289 million last year.

“The Falls,” Taiwan’s Oscar contender and a timely drama about the trauma of home quarantine, emerged as the unsurprising winner at the Golden Horse Film Awards in Taipei on Saturday.
And, in a bold decision that has the potential to enrage Mainland Chinese authorities, the prize for best documentary feature was awarded to “Revolution of Our Times.” The film chronicles the brutality of the political crackdown on the streets of Hong Kong in 2019 and 2020.
“The Falls,” which debuted at the Venice Film Festival in September, tells the tale of a mother and daughter cooped up in an apartment during a quarantine. It is directed by Chung Mong-hong, who previously directed “Parking” and “A Sun.”
At the award ceremony “The Falls” earned four prizes, including best narrative feature, best original screenplay, best actress and best original score.

Film scholar and former director of Taiwan’s Film Archive Huang Jianye is set to chair the jury for the 58th iteration of the Taipei-based Golden Horse Awards, the festival said Wednesday.
The awards are now heading into the third year without participants from China after a controversial awards speech in 2018 included mentions of Taiwanese independence. The comments led Beijing to order its citizens to make a hasty retreat that year and impose a ban on attending what had once been known as the Oscars of Asia.
Without China’s presence, the Golden Horse Awards have shrunk in scope, but are still soldiering on. Festival screenings are set to begin Nov. 11 ahead of the awards ceremony on Nov. 27 in Taipei.
Joining Huang on the jury this year will be Japanese producer Osaka Fumiko, a frequent collaborator of Hou Hsiao-hsien and Jia Zhangke; producer Lee Lieh; director Chen Yu-Hsun (“My Missing Valentine...

Hong Kong drama “Drifting” leads Taiwan’s Golden Horse Film Awards race with 12 nominations including best narrative feature and best adapted screenplay, organizers announced on Tuesday.
The film that revolves around the tragedy of homeless people in Hong Kong also earned a nomination for Jun Li in the best director category. Veteran actor Francis Ng, who plays a homeless drug addict battling for justice, was also nominated for best leading actor.
Since 2019, Beijing has operated a mainland Chinese boycott of the awards that for many years were seen as the highest accoladed for Chinese-language filmmaking. And in 2019 and 2020 most Hong Kong films and filmmakers also stayed away. This year’s list sees an uptick in the Hong Kong participation, but only in the cases of films that are unlikely ever to receive a release in mainland China.
The domination of “Drifting” in the race, however, is closely challenged by “The Falls,...

Photo: ‘The Soul’/Netflix Didn’t See That One Coming From writer and director Wei-Hao Cheng comes ‘The Soul’, or ‘Ji hun’, an adaptation of the novel of the same name written by Bo Jiang. Netflix’s ‘The Soul’ is one of the most intricate mysteries I have seen in a while. Set in the near future of 2032, the film follows Chen Chang’s character Liang Wen-Chao, a Taiwanese detective who was recently diagnosed with cancer, as he and his pregnant wife, Ah-Bao played by Janine Chung-Ning Chang, work together to solve a murder of a prominent CEO. This film really floored me — there is so much intricacy to its plot and its characters that it is clear to see the passion behind the film. Netflix is the king of the streaming world until proven otherwise. But in recent months the streamer’s lists of new releases have looked relatively sparse as competing media conglomerates remove their titles from Netflix’s library. With its list of new releases for April 2021, however, Netflix appears to have its original production machine operating at high capacity once again.
There are plenty of intriguing Netflix original series and films this month. The one that appears to have the highest blockbuster potential though is the series Shadow and Bone on April 23. Shadow and Bone is adapted from Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha-verse trilogy and should bring another compelling sci-fi/fantasy universe to the streaming world.

Update, writehru: Fans of Kollywood cinema got a treat this weekend as Tamil action thriller Master debuted in India and a handful of other markets across the harvest festival period. While we do not have confirmed figures for the Vijay-starrer in India, estimates had it at around $11M from Wednesday-Friday with the film believed to have crossed the coveted Rs 100 crore ($15M) gross mark over the weekend. Bows in such international box office markets as UAE, Australia, Singapore and New Zealand, along with the U.S., added about $3M (including previews) for the film from director Lokesh Kanagaraj.
Now, as we always caution, it is notoriously difficult to cull early numbers out of India given its varied states and reporting structure — which in some cases is gross and in others net after the subtraction of an entertainment tax. The situation is further complicated when a movie releases in four different...
