The 171st film by South Indian movie superstar Rajinikanth is to be directed by “Vikram” director Lokesh Kanagaraj, Kalanithi Maran’s Sun Pictures officially announced on Monday, putting an end to months of speculation.

No further details are available, save the name of the music composer, Anirudh Ravichander and stunt choreographer Anbariv (the K.G.F. franchise), indicating that the film belongs to the action genre. The film is currently identified as “Thalaivar171.” Thalaivar translates literally as leader and is one of the laudatory sobriquets used to describe Rajinikanth.

Update, writethru: Disney/Marvel’s Eternals has come in ahead of projections with an opening weekend of $90.7M at the international box office, and $161.7M global when paired with domestic. This gives the Chloé Zhao-directed film bragging rights to the second-biggest worldwide opening for a Hollywood title in 2021. The global debut sets Eternals 26% ahead of Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings and 8% ahead of Black Widow in like-for-like markets. Overseas, that translates to 76% above Shang-Chi and 26% above Black Widow.

There have been many uncertainties at the box office since the pandemic began, but if there’s one thing that remains as true as ever, it is the box office dominance of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). MCU films Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings are two of the three top grossing films of the year, and the other film in the top three is Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which is part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and has some tie-ins with the MCU. This weekend sees the release of Eternals, the newest property in the MCU, and it is set to give the box office a jolt after a few weeks of declining grosses.

Opening on over 4,000 screens, the theatrical exclusive Eternals is the first film appearance of its titular race of immortal alien humanoid beings who are protectors of Earth against their evil counterparts the Deviants.

Bollywood blockbuster “Sooryavanshi” will receive a wide international release across 1,300 screens and 66 countries on Nov. 5, during the Diwali holiday frame.

This is the widest international distribution for an Indian film this holiday season, pipping the 1,193 screen release for “Annaatthe,” starring Indian superstar Rajinikanth.

The Hindi-language film, directed by Rohit Shetty and starring Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Ranveer Singh and Katrina Kaif, was due to release in March 2020, but was delayed due to Covid-19. The release was subsequently postponed a few times, with producer Reliance Entertainment steadfastly holding on for a theatrical release. Consequently, the film is awaited with keen anticipation.

“Sooryavanshi” is a continuation of Shetty’s Cop Universe, which began with “Singham” (2011), the remake of Tamil-language “Singam” (2010), followed by “Singham Returns (2014), and “Simmba” (2018).

In North America, “Sooryavanshi,” will be released on 520 screens in 490 locations. It will be shown on 137 screens in the United Arab Emirates and 107 screens in Australia.

James Bond film “No Time to Die” and epic Frank Herbert adaptation “Dune” slugged it out at the top of the U.K. and Ireland box office with the iconic spy edging out the desert warriors.

In its fifth weekend, Universal release “No Time to Die” collected £3.5 million ($4.7 million) and now has a total of £85.9 million, according to numbers released by Comscore.

Warner Bros.’ “Dune,” which had debuted in pole position, came in second with £3.3 million and has collected £13.2 million after its second weekend.

In its third weekend, Sony’s “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” took £1.5 million in third place and has a running total of £14.7 million.

Universal’s “The Addams Family 2” continued performing well with £1.4 million in fourth place and now has £8.9 million after its fourth weekend.

Rounding off the top five, another Universal release, “The Boss Baby: Family Business,” collected £1.3 million in its second weekend for a total of £4.9 million.

Superstar Rajinikanth was Sunday discharged from Apollo Hospital here, where he was admitted on Friday with severe fluctuations in blood pressure.

The hospital said the actor was discharged after an improvement in his medical condition. The actor later left for Chennai.

It said in a statement that he was admitted with severe hypertension and exhaustion.

"He was kept under close medical supervision and treated by a team of doctors. His blood pressure has been stabilised and he is feeling much better. In view of his improved medical condition, he is being discharged from the hospital today," it said.

In view of his post-transplant status, labile hypertension and age, the doctors have advised him complete bed rest for one week with regular monitoring of blood pressure. He was also advised to undertake minimal physical activity and to avoid stress.
