For some fans of genre storytelling, 2024 has been a bit of a disappointing year. The Boys season 4 didn't over with fans quite as well as past installments, the House of the Dragon showrunners are feuding publicly with George R.R. Martin, and the latest Star Wars content from Disney+ — The Acolyte — was extremely divisive among fans. Since these were some of the most highly anticipated and high-budget genre series of the year, it has left many fans of genre storytelling feeling a bit morose. There have been bright spots: the historical fiction series Shogun crushed it at the Emmy’s and I personally am really enjoying the return of The Legend of Vox Machina. But whether because of last year’s acting and writer’s strikes or because new seasons of shows are taking longer than ever to reach our screens, 2024 is definitely not the year that it could have been.

The Legend of Vox Machina is an animated series with three finished seasons available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, with a fourth on the way. The show is based on a series of Dungeons & Dragons sessions put on by the members of Critical Role, a group of voice actors who have spun their hang-out sessions into a media empire.
Because seasons 1, 2, and 3 of The Legend of Vox Machina each covered roughly 30 live Critical Role gameplay sessions, I expect season 4 to take us through episodes 73-100 or so. The Vox Machina campaign runs for 121 episodes in total. That means the creators and voice actors of Critical Role may be planning a fifth season to round out the story, or they could pack all the remaining episodes in season 4. We know they're working on a new animated adaptation of The Mighty Nein, the campaign they played after Vox Machina was finished.

The Legend of Vox Machina‘s third season has officially come to a close, and while the 12 episodes pretty faithfully adapted the remaining narrative of the original campaign’s Chroma Conclave arc, it wasn’t without some major changes — both ones that were departures from the original story and ones that were simply expanded moments worthy of a world-building that will be useful down the road. No matter what the material is, adaptations are always tricky. You have the task of introducing a new narrative that feels fresh and exciting, but you also have to keep enough old elements for fans to care about the source material in the first place. In other words: you need to reinvent something beloved while keeping it recognizable. Fortunately, with the cast of Critical Role at the helm of their show, that’s not an issue — they know what fans want to see and...

We’ve come to the final three episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina season 3. I’d love to pound my tankard on the tavern bar and yell, “More. More. More!” But it had to come to an end sooner or later. Let’s take a look:
The Legend of Vox Machina Episode 310: “To the Ends of the World”
Keyleth, upset with how the rest of Vox Machina didn’t listen to her doubts about Raishan, flies away. Then Vex and Vax set out with their plans to finish off Ripley. Pike worries the team is splitting up. She and Grog try bringing Scanlan out of his coma and wonder if they’re unsuccessful because he doesn’t want to wake. Seeing Scanlan’s sheet music gives Pike an idea.
Pike approaches Scanlan’s daughter and shows Kaylie the song he wrote about her. Pike also tells her how...

The Legend of Vox Machina is currently tearing through its third season on Amazon Prime Video, and the fans are responding: the most recent installment, "Thordak's Throne," is the highest-rated episode in the show's history on IMDb, and it looks like they're going to charge full-throttle towards an exciting endgame; the final three episodes of season 3 drop tomorrow.
Vox Machina is an animated adaptation of a Dungeons & Dragons campaign played by the voice actors of Critical Role, and it has everything you'd expect from a show with that pedigree: adventure, violence, goofy jokes, dragons and more. For this TV version, the cast and crew have changed the plot around a bit so the dramatic twists hit harder, and we can't say for sure that the season 3 finale will follow the game beat for beat. In Critical Role's original version, the adventures of the Vox Machina crew continue for a...

Though I’m more of a casual Trekkie, something about Star Trek Lower Decks really clicked with me. I admittedly slept on it for a few years, but after finally giving it a chance, I immediately fell in love with its charming cast of scrappy underdogs, witty humor, and inventive sci-fi storytelling. Just my luck that I become obsessed with the show right as its coming to an end.
But though this may be the last on-screen adventure for our beloved Lower Deckers, at least for now, I’m happy to report that Season 5 sends them off in style with the kind of intelligence and forward thinking that makes Star Trek so beloved alongside the humor and underdog spirit that sets Lower Decks apart from the crowd. Though bear in mind that this only applies to the first five episodes, as that was what was made available to me at time of writing.

In the seventh episode of The Legend of Vox Machina, "Cloak and Dagger," steampunk gunslinger Percy faces off with someone from his past, the devious Anna Ripley. After a shootout, he offers her mercy. Instead of taking it, she shoots him in the chest, killing him.
Vox Machina is based on a Dungeons & Dragons campaign played by the troupe of voice actors from Critical Role, and Percy's death also happens in the campaign. However, in that instance, the rest of the team rushes Percy to a temple and revives him, something you can do in D&d. On the show, his death is less fleeting.
“In the campaign, we were able to bring him back very quickly, but I think that can be something that loses its gravity if you’re constantly able to revive somebody who has died over and over again,” Vox Machina star Laura Bailey (Vex’ahlia) told Polygon.

The Legend of Vox Machina’s much-anticipated third season has left very little to the imagination. Whether it's scenes of amorous encounters, like the one that takes place between Vex and Percy, or gruesome battle frames, they’ve been showing them, outright, spice and all.
When asked about how such scenes jive with their vision for the show, the Critical Role team told CinemaBlend that Vox Machina is the exact show they want to make and watch. Through and through, their depiction of the nitty-gritty (and all that in between) isn’t meant to be gratuitous. Rather, in their eyes, it helps the show feel more lived-in, fleshing out the world in a way that any Dungeons & Dragons enthusiast can understand. In order for a campaign to be compelling, you need to have trust in the world in your characters. And part of that trust is playing things out...

We are officially halfway through the third season of The Legend of Vox Machina, with the final six episodes (three this Thursday and three next week) on the way. To say it’s been a whirlwind of a season for our intrepid adventurers would be an understatement. In addition to navigating some pretty intense personal relationship situations, they’ve also had to deal with some unexpected betrayals, travels to places no one wants to go, and they’ve come close to death more than once thanks to the remaining Chroma Conclave dragons. When we last left our heroes, they were reeling from the destruction of Whitestone following an attack from Thordak’s (Lance Reddick) hatched dragons. Despite swearing off revenge after finding happiness with Vex (Laura Bailey), Percy (Taliesin Jaffe) found himself with no choice but to go after his old nemesis Anna Ripley (Kelly Hu) when he realized she...

[The following story contains major spoilers for Episodes 3-6 of The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3.] They’ve visited hell. They’ve retrieved a sacred vestige. They’ve slain a dragon. They’ve faced emotional reckonings. But Vox Machina’s most memorable moment so far in its third season might be the opening scene of Season 6. You know which one we’re talking about, because if you’re anything like us, you probably haven’t stopped rewinding it. In the original Vox Machina campaign, “Scanlan’s Magnificent Mansion” existed in a pocket dimension created by Scanlan via a specific D&d spell. The group — Vex (Laura Bailey), Vax (Liam O’Brien), Keyleth (Marisha Ray), Grog (Travis Willingham), Percy (Taliesin Jaffe) and Pike (Ashley Johnson) used it as a ...

The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 continues with the one-liners, relationship woes, and tons of action. I have to say this series gets better with each episode.
Vox Machina is based on the first Dungeons & Dragons adventure taken by the cast members of Critical Role, but references to characters from their second and third adventures (The Mighty Nein and Bells Hells) show up. I noticed a bard singing about Ruby of the Sea, who is in The Mighty Nein. Incidentally, The Mighty Nein is also getting turned into an animated series, so perhaps Vox Machina is laying the groundwork.
And with that, let's look at the latest three episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina to drop on Amazon Prime Video.

The Legend of Vox Machina recently debuted its third season on Prime Video, but future episodes of the fantasy show may be in doubt.
Vox Machina adapts the first Dungeons & Dragons campaign from Critical Role, which sees many of the original cast members reprise their roles for Vox Machina, in which they recreate the adventures of their ragtag group of heroes in Exandria in an animated series format.
Season 3 of The Legend of Vox Machina premiered on October 3 and follows the group as they continue their quest to put an end to the evil Chroma Conclave.

The core cast of “The Legend of Vox Machina” is pretty unique among voice actors, or actors of any stripe, really. It’s rare that an actor originates the concept for a character, lives with them for nearly a decade, improvises nearly 400 hours of material, and participates closely in the character design, scripting, and storyboarding of an animated series — all before they step into the booth to record their lines.
The Prime Video series (about a group of fantasy fuck-ups who might just be the heroes the magical land of Exandra needs) balances that wealth of experience that the “Critical Role” cast — Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Matthew Mercer, Liam O’Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, and Travis Willingham — all have with an adventuring party full of guest voices. Rachel House, Stephanie Beatriz, Gina Torres, and the late, great Lance Reddick, among others, all sub in for characters originally voiced...

On Thursday, the show debuted on Prime Video with the first three of 12 episodes — and while fans delighted in the series returning, longtime audiences of the show and the original Ttrpg campaign on which the show is based were excited to be served some very special scenes…ones that even the cast themselves were excited to include. “That was on my list of things that we absolutely have to have in the show, you know what I mean?” Laura Bailey told TV Insider, referring to her character Vex’ahlia’s infamous moment of greeting Percy (Taliesin Jaffe) by opening the door naked when he comes to visit her room in Whitestone. Of course, the moment happens in the wake of...

The third season of The Legend of Vox Machina, based on the adventures of the Critical Role role-playing troupe, is off and running on Amazon Prime Video. The first three episodes are available to watch now, with the rest coming out in groups of three every Thursday.
Before we dive into each episode individually, let's do a little overview of what they have to offer. The characters in Vox Machina are exceptional, faults and all. The title sequence alludes to upcoming struggles and consequences. I love how the bit about alcohol being referred to as "liquid courage" came through the episodes subtly; wine bottles have labels saying the word ‘courage’ on them.
The types of dragons, which our heroes fight, are portrayed in interesting ways. The red dragon, Thordak, has rows on either side of his neck which redden as he powers up his fiery breath.

The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 is just hours away from premiering on Amazon Prime Video, and, according to the cast, fans can expect to see the entire team moving mountains to bring the story forward. “Adapting something to the length of our campaign is always going to be a Herculean effort,” Matthew Mercer says of condensing a 115-episode campaign that spans hundreds of hours and almost seven years of storytelling. Indeed, the task is tough — the current third season is essentially a continuation of a narrative arc that began in Season 2 because there was so much to cover — but everyone in the Critical Role world has proven they’re more than up to the task. When TV Insider sat down with the full cast to talk about the upcoming episodes, it was clear they were not only proud of the work they’d done this season but also excited for the potential future.

The world of Exandria grows ever more grim as Vox Machina’s journey enters its most challenging phase. After their victory over the dragon Umbrasyl in the previous season, the adventuring party returns home, hoping to celebrate. But danger is never far behind for this mismatched group of heroes. They are interrupted by a startling revelation: the green dragon Raishan has deceived them, and her true intentions remain unclear.
Worse still, the forces arrayed against our protagonists continue to strengthen. Thordak, the fearsome Cinder King who leads the Chroma Conclave, has laid a clutch of dragon eggs. If they were to hatch, this new generation of dragonkind could lay waste to countless lands. And so Vox Machina’s quest to defeat the Conclave and curb Thordak’s ambition becomes more urgent than ever.

The proliferation of tabletop gaming has become a godsend for entertainment. The rise of shows like Dimension 20 and The Adventure Zone helped to connect the dots between comedy and role-playing. After all, when actors and voice performers take center stage, these experiences become the ultimate manifestation of improv and off-the-cuff comedy. Basing The Legend of Vox Machina on an established series like Critical Role was a no-brainer in terms of plot.
The Legend of Vox Machina rises to the top of the gaming world through incredible animation and relatable stakes.
