Here is another new column I'm going to start. Every so often I am going to make a confession. Not about my personal life, don't get too excited. Instead I'll be making a confession about a movie. Either a movie I secretly hate or secretly love. I'm warning you, some of the things I say may shock and even appal you and I do expect backlash, but everything I write is the truth and are my honest opinions. I have a rather odd taste in film and don't usually agree with the general consensus on films. This week's edition is about a movie I actually liked. My confession is I secretly enjoyed... Arcand bringing 'Barbarian' to Vancouver fest
VANCOUVER -- With an accent this year on homegrown movie galas, organizers of the Vancouver International Film Festival said Wednesday that the fest will open Sept. 25 with a screening of Denys Arcand's Cannes hit The Barbarian Invasions. The screening comes as the Quebec director's latest movie does the festival circuit ahead of a Nov. 21 theatrical release via Miramax and Odeon Films in Canada. The Vancouver festival also will unspool Winnipeg filmmaker Guy Maddin's The Saddest Music in the World as its anniversary gala before closing Oct. 10 with a gala screening of Charles Martin Smith's The Snow Walker. In all, the Vancouver festival -- Canada's second-largest film festival after the Toronto International Film Festival -- will screen 323 films, including 11 world premieres and 40 international premieres, during its 16-day run.
