A quarter century after winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Girl, Interrupted,” Angelina Jolie is hoping to pick up the Best Actress trophy for her performance in “Maria.” In terms of Oscar history, she’d join Meryl Streep, Jessica Lange, Cate Blanchett, and Renée Zellweger, who all won for featured performances before prevailing again for star turns.
Jolie’s role, that of real-life opera singer Maria Callas, has already been proven to be awards-worthy and won Jane Seymour an Emmy nearly four decades ago. This English rose featured in the 1988 TV movie “Onassis: The Richest Man in the World,” opposite Raul Julia as Aristotle Onassis and Anthony Quinn as his father, Socrates. This remains her only Emmy win from five nominations.
Zellweger won Best Actress for her sensitive portrayal of Judy Garland in the 2020 flick “Judy.” Back in 2001, Tammy Blanchard and Judy Davis took home Emmys for their work...

Emmy voters are now halfway through final balloting for this year’s awards, making decisions about which drama and comedy series, limited series, talk series, variety series and specials, structured and unstructured reality programs, reality competition shows, animated programs, documentary and nonfiction programs and game shows they like best.
And, oh yeah, they’re also picking their favorite TV movies, although they probably won’t have to think too long or too hard about what seems to have become the Emmys’ least consequential category.
It wasn’t always like that. The Outstanding TV Movie category has produced some notable television, including “Death of a Salesman” with Lee J. Cobb, the ultimate tearjerker “Brian’s Song,” the shocking “Special Bulletin”and 21st century standouts “The Gathering Storm,” “Recount,” “Grey Gardens,” “Behind the Candelabra” and even last year’s winner, “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.”

Albert Finney had an acting legacy including triumphs on stage and television. He was primarily known worldwide for his career, which lasted over half a century, as a film actor, equally adept in lighthearted musicals and complex dramas.
Finney’s work has been heralded in all three media. He won London’s Olivier Award for “Orphans” on stage, and won an Emmy, Golden Globe and BAFTA Award for his performance as Winston Churchill in TV’s “The Gathering Storm.” But it was in film that Finney was most honored. In 2000, Finney scored a rare double at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, winning Best Supporting Actor for his work in Steven Soderbergh‘s “Erin Brockovich,” and even though he had little more than a cameo part in Soderbergh’s “Traffic” later that year, the role was big enough for him to win a second SAG Award that night as part of the film’s ensemble cast.

Upon its August 2023 premiere, the Amazon Prime Video original film “Red, White & Royal Blue” quickly gained a massive audience, a large portion of which reportedly created new subscriptions just so they could view it. Now, the two-hour adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s 2019 novel of the same name is set to embark on a 2024 TV awards run that, of course, won’t include the delayed 75th Emmys but could more than reasonably begin with the 81st Golden Globes. If it does make its way into the upcoming Best Limited Series/TV Movie lineup, it will be the first one-off film in seven years to earn Golden Globes recognition as a general program.
Directed and co-written by Tony winner Matthew López (“The Inheritance”), “Red, White & Royal Blue” stars Taylor Zakhar Perez (“The Kissing Booth” franchise) and Nicholas Galitzine (2021’s “Cinderella”) as two fictional world leaders’ offspring whose bitter rivalry unexpectedly evolves into a romance.

A little over a decade ago, actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint stood on a train platform, with questionable “middle age” makeup applied, and waved goodbye. Their characters were saying goodbye to their onscreen kids, but they were really waving farewell to millions of moviegoers and readers who grew up with their versions of Harry, Hermione, and Ron. In a way, the actors were also bidding adieu to their onscreen characters.
Admittedly a decade is not a super long time (though it’s a lifetime as far as media company CEOs anxious to exploit IP are concerned). Yet in these past 10 years, we’ve watched thespians we once knew as children mature into grown-up working actors, and some of the favorites who played their teachers and mentors go on to win Oscars and greater acclaim. Below are some of the best roles the Harry Potter cast has achieved since graduating from Hogwarts.

eOne and Crime Story Media have partnered with LAist 89.3, Los Angeles’ number one NPR station and podcast company Acast to present the original podcast series, Night Raid. Night Raid tells the story of a chaotic 2014 Swat raid on a home in San Gabriel that resulted in the death of Pomona Police Officer Shaun Diamond and the incarceration of David Martinez.

“The Book of Boba Fett” hit Disney+ last year, but most of the conversation about the “Star Wars” spinoff series was around a supporting character who showed up towards the end of the show (season?): Pedro Pascal’s The Mandalorian.
We haven’t had a new episode of “The Mandalorian” since way back in December 2020, when Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) showed up to spirit away young Baby Yoda aka Grogu. What happened to the adorable little creature? And how has the Mandalorian himself been dealing with the loss of his charge? Well, as it turns out, this was all revealed in a few “The Book of Boba Fett” episodes, and if you want to catch up before “The Mandalorian” Season 3, here’s how.

The Emmy landscape has changed drastically in the past two decades. Going in to the 54th Emmy Awards, which took place on Sept. 22, 2002, it was a broadcast network — NBC — that led the nominations with 47. Emmy powerhouse HBO came in second with 38. FX and VH1 earned their first nominations while the first major streaming series, Netflix’s “House of Cards,” was still 11 years away. Several of this year’s contenders for Emmy gold were either nominated or won 20 years ago.
Laura Linney, who has been nominated nine times and won four statuettes, is nominated this year for her lead role in the final season of Netflix’s “Ozark” and as co-executive producer of this drama series contender. This Star Wars: The Book Of Boba Fett review contains spoilers.
The Book of Boba Fett Episode 5
Finally, The Book of Boba Fett gets good…by becoming a different show entirely. You could watch this episode completely independently, as a bridge between season two of The Mandalorian and the upcoming season three. The shift shines an even bigger light on Boba’s lack of an arc within his own show, but it’s hard to complain when Bryce Dallas Howard‘s direction on the usual Jon Favreau script brings so much entertainment.
Unlike Boba Fett, Din Djarin doesn’t want or have the ability to shift from bounty hunting to a more managerial position. “Return of the Mandalorian” opens with exactly what it says on the tin as Din strides into a slaughterhouse to collect a bounty. He hasn’t been back home to the covert since giving baby Grogu to Luke Skywalker,...

"The Book of Boba Fett" just set up a major confrontation with "The Gathering Storm," the fourth episode in "The Mandalorian" spin-off series that has further expanded the "Star Wars" universe. We've been expecting some kind of face-off between Boba Fett and at least one of the crime families in Mos Espa since the former bounty hunter chose to take over Jabba the Hutt's territory, and it's clear there's a war coming with the Pyke Syndicate. But what we weren't expecting quite so soon, like the slaughter of the Tusken Raider village Fett became acquainted with, was the apparent end of the flashback visions he has been...

The fourth episode of "The Book of Boba Fett" has arrived on Disney+, and "The Gathering Storm" certainly sets the stage for a major confrontation between the titular bounty huter and the Pyke Syndicate. Now that the flashbacks brought upon by Boba Fett's healing sessions in the bacta tank seem to have concluded, the focus is squarely on the present day story. In fact, if the ending of this episode of "The Book of Boba Fett" is any indicator, it (literally) sounds like the series might be circling back for a little crossover with the character who helped bring the notorious bounty hunter...

"...'The Wheel of Time' is set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it, including 'Moiraine', a member of the shadowy and influential all-female organization 'Aes Sedai', as she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women.
"Moiraine believes one of them might be the reincarnation of an incredibly powerful individual, whom prophecies say will either save humanity or destroy it..."
Amazon Prime Video will bring the one-hour fantasy drama to over 200 markets. The series is being adapted by Rafe Judkins ("Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.") and is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios.

“Black Mirror’s” loss could be HBO’s gain. After three straight Best TV Movie Emmy victories for various episodes and not meeting the new 75-minute runtime requirement, “Black Mirror” is forced to compete in drama this year, paving the way for HBO to claim its record-extending 22 win in the category with “Bad Education.”
It may be hard to remember after the “Black Mirror’s” three-peat, which followed “Sherlock’s” victory in 2016 for its special episode “The Abominable Bride,” but the Best TV Movie category used to be HBO’s domain. The network started off with a bang in 1993, triumphing in a tie for its films “Barbarians at the Gate” and “Stalin,” and then ran the table for the rest of the decade.
Since 2000, HBO has racked up 13 wins; besides the last four years, its other 21st-century losses occurred in 2000 (ABC’s “Tuesdays with Morrie” won), 2003 (TNT’s “Door to Door...

The actress, who was most recently seen under a pile of rubble in the final episode of the HBO mega hit, will play the title character in “Rita,” an hour-long dramedy which has received a pilot production order at Showtime.
Headey’s character in the new project is described as a headstrong, unconventional teacher and single mother who takes on every kind of authority – as well as her family – in a messy and unfiltered way.
The pilot is being written and executive produced by Christian Torpe and is based on his original Danish series. Headey is also on board as an executive producer.

As A-list stars and auteurs made their way to TV this decade, “limited series” orders became a way to sign them up without having to lock in full-season commitments. The format has become such a dominant part of modern TV culture that it’s hard to believe that less than a decade ago there were too few miniseries (as the genre was then dubbed) to even mount its own category.
In 2011, the Television Academy merged TV movie and miniseries into one consolidated program field because the number of miniseries entries had dropped below the threshold needed for at least five nominees. Ironically, that same year both PBS’ “Downton Abbey” and FX’s “American Horror Story” premiered — and the success of those shows swiftly became the template for a whole new kind of “limited series” that now dominates the genre.

Albert Finney was destined to play Winston Churchill. That was the view of the producers behind the 2002 HBO movie “The Gathering Storm,” which earned Finney his first and only Emmy Award.
Finney, who died Thursday in London at the age of 82, was envisioned for the role of Churchill in “Storm” from the outset, according to producer Colin Callender, who ran HBO’s movies and miniseries department at the time Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions made “Storm.”
The movie tells the story of Churchill’s return from political exile in Britain during the 1930s, as he continually sounds the alarm about the growing Nazi menace in Germany. Vanessa Redgrave played Churchill’s wife, Clementine, in the movie that is rooted in the strength of their love and her influence on his life.

“To be a character who feels a deep emotion, one must go into the memory’s vault and mix in a sad memory from one’s own life” – Albert Finney, 1936-2019.
Finney was part of a post-war wave of English performers, including Tom Courtenay, Richard Burton, Peter O’Toole, Alan Bates and Oliver Reed, who made a quite a splash on the big screen in the early ‘60s. The much-admired actor, who was nominated for five Oscars spanning four different decades yet never won one, died at age 82 on Thursday.
Finney first earned awards attention as a hard-drinking, philandering and disgruntled member of the working class in the 1960 British release “Saturday Night and Sunday Morning,” which was emblematic of a genre called the “kitchen sink drama.” But it was his charming rogue who proved irresistible to women in 1963’s “Tom Jones,” a bawdy, boisterous picaresque that blew the dust off of period pieces,...
