WWF where not impressed with Acclaim after they had asked them to step up their game after Warzone to compete with rival company WCWs THQ/AKI titles. Attitude received positive reviews for graphics and it's huge roster, but negative reviews for environments and controls only suitable to a Mortal Kombat fan. WWF then sought out THQ when their contract was up with WCW and Acclaim signed with ECW to develop an Attitude clone with ECW wrestlers.
The last WWF game involving ACCLAIM, who had previously brought out LJN. LJN had been making WWF titles since 1988. THQ would take over the WWF/WWE brand from 1999 until 2013, when they went out of business, and the WWE brand went to 2K Games.
The game was originally to feature a backstage mode, but was scrapped by the final release. This left WCW Mayhem as the first wrestling game to feature a backstage brawling area.
Originally Tiger Ali Singh and Steven Regal where on the game's roster, but removed before final release.
