Star Trek: Lower Decks is back for its fifth and final season. The series will wrap up this year and the hope is to send off the show with a big bang. Starting with the first episode of the fifth and final season, we get to see how the crew handles the multiverse.
Our own Brian T. Sullivan wrote up a review of the first episode back, highlighting the complexities that come with using multiple variants of the same characters. It's been a Star Trek staple to use this idea, going all the way back to the original series where we saw the Mirror Universe version of our favorite characters.
So it's not surprising that we're once again back and dealing with multiverse variants of Star Trek characters. It's also likely that this isn't the last time we see multiverse versions of characters this season. In a clip from the season five trailer,...

Charles Cyphers, best known for his role as Leigh Brackett in the Halloween films, died Sunday, August 4 from a brief illness in Tucson, Az, his manager Chris Roe confirmed to Deadline. He was 85.
“Charles was a lovable and sensitive man,” Roe said in a statement. “He always had the best stories, and you got a full performance while he told you. He was a close friend and client of many years who will be dearly missed.”
“His family asks for privacy at this time,” Roe added. “Details on a celebration of life ceremony will happen at a date and location to be determined.”
Cyphers worked extensively with Halloween‘s John Carpenter, first in the 1976 action film Assault on Precinct 13, in which he played Starker, one of the ill-fated police officers gunned down by gang members. He next appeared in Carpenter’s 1980 horror film The Fog, playing Dan O’Bannon, and...

Over the course of a screen acting career that stretched across fifty years, Charles Cyphers racked up 100 credits, but he’s best known for his collaborations with John Carpenter, having appeared in the director’s Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, Someone’s Watching Me!, Elvis, The Fog, and Escape from New York. His most popular character was Sheriff Leigh Brackett from the 1978 Halloween, a role he reprised in 1981’s Halloween II and, after a forty year absence from the Halloween franchise, 2021’s Halloween Kills. Sadly, we’ve lost this great character actor, as Variety reports that Cyphers has passed away “from a brief illness” at the age of 85.
Cyphers’ manager Chris Roe confirmed his passing to Variety and provided the following statement: “Charles was a lovable and sensitive man. He always had the best stories, and you got a full performance while he told you. He was a close friend and...

Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken" best handled the topic of choice.
Dark Matter Season 1 Episode 1 and Dark Matter Season 1 Episode 2 are the latest on this topic.
Duplicate characters existing in separate dimensions is hardly a novel concept on television (or almost any creative medium).
The first such episode featuring a parallel universe was, no shock, on the 1963 episode of The Twilight Zone, "The Parallel." An astronaut returns from a lengthy journey to find his world not quite the same as he remembers it.
Another early example came in 1970 on the soap opera Dark Shadows. Vampire Barnabas Collins found a room in his mansion, Collinwood, a portal he used to escape to parallel time.
This concept was most vital in the 1967 Star Trek episode "Mirror, Mirror." It was set in a dimension where evil twins of the Star Trek characters lived.
This mirror universe was revisited on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine...

"Petticoat Junction" was the unofficial second part of the Paul Henning Hooterville trilogy, a trio of 1960s sitcoms about the clash between city slickers and country bumpkins. In 1962, Henning created "The Beverly Hillbillies," a series about hillbillies who, when they strike oil, move to Beverly Hills. In 1965, he inverted the formula with "Green Acres," a show about millionaires who move to a farm to learn about country living. Sandwiched in between the two was "Petticoat Junction," which debuted on September 24, 1963. "Junction" took place at the Shady Rest Hotel, overseen by the lovable widowed hayseed Kate Bradley (Bea Benederet). She and her uncle Joe (Edgar Buchanan) would run the hotel and oversee the shenanigans of her three daughters Betty Jo, Billie Jo, and Bobbie Jo.
"Petticoat Junction" takes place in the same universe as "Green Acres," as both shows make constant references to common fictional cities that the characters visit. There were a few supporting crossovers,...

Goodbye, The Lazarus Project. Unless a mysterious sci-fi organisation steps in to reset time to before Sky chose to cancel the mind-bending time travel drama, that’s our lot. After airing two seasons, they won’t be making a third.
The news was first announced in The Sun, and later confirmed by trustworthy outlets including TV Zone and RadioTimes.com. It had previously been rumoured that if season three were to go ahead, creator Joe Barton would be stepping back to a producer role and welcoming in new writers, who would have to do without some of the major cast members including Tom Burke. Now, that won’t happen because season two will be the last.
Barton posted the cancellation news on social media, along with a meme featuring a woman and a child wearing matching denim jackets throwing confetti in the air, along with the words “Don’t cry because it’s over,...

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, prolific screenwriter Tracy Tormé has passed away at the age of 64. Tormé was a veteran of 1980s-era "Saturday Night Live" and wrote the TV movie "UFO Cover-Up?: Live!" in 1988, cementing his reputation among amateur ufologists everywhere. In the late '80s, Tormé was hand-picked by show creator Gene Roddenberry to contribute to the then-new "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Tormé became the show's executive story editor and creative consultant, a position he held for 24 of the show's early episodes. He is also the credited writer on 12 first-season episodes, including "Haven," "Skin of Evil," "The Arsenal of Freedom," and "The Big Goodbye."
That last episode, which aired on January 11, 1988, was notable in that it was the first holodeck-forward episode of the series. The holodeck was, of course, introduced in the show's pilot, "Encounter at Farpoint," which explained to audiences that the Enterprise-d was equipped with...

Tracy Tormé, the vision behind Sliders and an early writer on Star Trek: The Next Generation, has passed away at the age of 64 from complications from diabetes.
Tracy Tormé’s work and contributions within the sci-fi genre made him famous to fans. As per his sister (via The Hollywood Reporter), he “always interested in UFOs — the serious side of UFOs — and in the Air Force pilots who had seen them.” While he only wrote for two seasons on The Next Generation – also serving as story editor – his touch undoubtedly gave the series the thrust it needed to set the tone for the remainder of the series. The greatest success of his career, however, may be Sliders, which he co-created with Robert K. Weiss. Such a following it had developed, when Fox canceled it after three seasons, Sci Fi picked it up for its remaining two. In total, Sliders had 88 episodes...

The late 1990s and early 2000s were a weird era for films. There is definitely an influence from Y2K, and it seemed like there was an attitude that anything goes from some and a tightening of the belt from others. The world was in an odd place, and this influenced everything in culture like music, television, and films. 2002 gave us a wide variety of horror, like Queen of the Damned, Fear Dot Com, Cabin Fever, Bubba Ho-Tep, Dog Soldiers, and Bloody Mallory. This was the end of an era and the start of another for David Arquette it seemed. A time when he tested the “leading man” waters. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite go as planned as box office bomb after box office bomb came. Films like Ravenous, Ready to Rumble, 3000 Miles to Graceland, See Spot Run, and The Grey Zone all featured Arquette in some form but...

Actor Peter Spellos had over 150 screen acting and vocal performance credits to his name, but genre fans are most likely to remember him as Orville Ketchum from the slasher movie Sorority House Massacre II and its companion piece Hard to Die, as well as the brief appearance he made as the character Tracy’s father in Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare. Outside of horror, he’s best known for providing the voice of Sky-Byte in 39 episodes of the animated series Transformers: Robots in Disguise. Unfortunately, we have very sad news to share today, as it has been confirmed that Spellos has passed away at age 69 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born on March 1, 1954, Spellos passed away yesterday, November 19th, at the Franciscan Hospice House in Indianapolis. His brother, James Spellos, notified TMZ that his family is planning an online “celebration of life” gathering for his fans.

TV drama writers obsess over audience engagement, with a huge emphasis on personal stakes for their characters. The biggest of these is the prospect of death. But 70+ years of TV have taught us that mortality is rare for characters played by a show's stars. So, when actors leave a show or the decision is made to cut a character, writers see a golden opportunity to play the ultimate stakes game by going terminal.
It's safe to say character departures always upset a segment of a show's audience, however small. But not all such deaths are created equal. Some generate a wave of complaints, others a tsunami of outrage. It's the deaths of characters we love or love to hate, and those especially shocking or egregious, that drive fans to write all-caps messages, accompanied by many exclamation points, in fanzines, letter columns, and social media.
Here are 14 of the most controversial of the controversial.

It's hard to imagine now but there was a time, back in the long-long-ago, when government conspiracies seemed kinda fun. Television shows like "The X-Files" assured us all that the government was up to something, but it was kinda cool stuff like extraterrestrial life forms, and something about bees? There were a bunch of bees at one point. It seemed like it made sense back in the 1990s.
Nowadays, quite a few episodes of "The X-Files" seem relatively quaint by modern standards of sci-fi/horror television, but there are also quite a few that still stand out. They weren't just smartly written, they weren't just creepily photographed, they were legitimately interesting, bizarre and — occasionally — even controversial.
But there's no episode of "The X-Files" that's nearly as disturbing, let alone violent, as the second episode of the show's fourth season. Entitled "Home," it was so visceral, so unsettling, that the episode...

Multiverse storytelling is nothing new, but it sure seems like it's having a moment. Several wildly popular movies and television shows have featured multiverses in the past few years, with even more due to hit theaters soon. Whether it's the animated antics of "Into the Spider-Verse," the heartfelt wackiness of Daniels Kwan and Scheinert, or the Marvel mayhem of "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," there's more than enough multiverse media to go around. But why now? What inspired this incredible influx of dimension-hopping fun, and will it slow down anytime soon?
Given that the concept behind multiverses is ancient — think Greek philosophers chatting in a salon — it's hard to imagine we'll see an end to multiverses in the movies. When reality becomes too much to bear, the idea of an alternate universe is ridiculously comforting, so there's no surprise that we have so many of these stories now.

As I dug into the brand new 4K release of Paul Verhoeven’s Total Recall, it struck me that it had been nearly 15 years since I last sat down and watched it. And once it was over, I realized just how much of a mistake that was, because Total Recall is still a brutally fun and somewhat trippy experience that definitely ushered in a new era of heady sci-fi action films throughout the 1990s and also proved that, heading into a new decade, Arnold Schwarzenegger was still the tops when it came to headlining ambitious cinematic projects that went against the grain.
If you’re reading this, chances are you probably have a good idea of what Total Recall is all about, so I’ll keep this overview brief. Based on the Philip K. Dick short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale,” Total Recall transports us to the...

This DuckTales article contains spoilers for season 3 episode 12.
While watching DuckTales I sometimes think about what writing the show is like. While I know there’s considerable time spent on writing the complex characters, their arcs, the world, and just making a great story? I have no doubt there’s also got to be at least an hour long discussion every week of “okay but what deep cut Disney reference can we do in this episode?”
Throughout the 2017 DuckTales there’s been references big and small to Disney’s past. In the recent Darkwing Duck episode of DuckTales, “Let’s Get Dangerous” we got a Bonkers cameo! However, so far all the references have at least been to things fans were more or less aware of. This reference though was the deepest of deep cuts. Beyond the Disney afternoon, beyond the comics, there was one moment in that recent Darkwing Duck...

Comcast and NBCUniversal are pushing Peacock out of the nest starting Wednesday, April 15, promising to unfurl a rich plume of 15,000-plus hours of streaming content, first for the cable giant’s own TV and internet customers.
Peacock is then slated to be available across the U.S. on July 15 — while NBCU is mulling the possibility of moving that up sooner — in various three tiers across mobile, web and connected-tv devices: paid with ads ($4.99 monthly); paid with no ads ($9.99 monthly); and completely free with ads with a truncated content lineup. With the national launch, Comcast (and Cox) subscribers also will have the option to get an ad-free version of the service for an additional $5 per month.
So what’s on the menu? Peacock will include live and on-demand content across current and past TV shows, movies, news, and late night programming, with some live sports once they resume post-pandemic. Most of...

Sliders could be coming back with help from Jerry O’Connell and John Rhys-Davies. Time to get your whisper on.
Sliiiiiiidddeerrrrrsssssss might be returning to Earth Prime! As reported by Flickering Myth, John Rhys-Davies along with fellow co-star Jerry O'Connell have been talking with NBC about a possible revival of the cult sci-fi series. For those who might not remember the series Sliders followed Quinn Mallory, his professor Arturo, best friend Wade, and former hit singer Rembrandt slide from parallel universe to parallel universe, trying to get home.
Davies says that O'Connell had been, "pestering me for a number of years (about a revival) and we’re actually talking to NBC at the moment to see if there’s any possibility of rebooting the series."
The biggest problem in their way at the moment is who actually owns the series.

Do you remember the 1995 sci-fi series Sliders? That’s a show that I haven’t really thought about in years, but it was a fun show to watch!
The series focused on a group of scientists who discover ways to slide into parallel universes. As they travel to different parallel universes, they get lost and have to try and find their way back home.
It turns out that series stars John Rhys-Davies and Jerry O’Connell want to make a revival series and Rhys-Davies says that they are currently in talks with NBC about making it happen! While talking to Flickering Myth, he said:
“Jerry had been pestering me for a number of years and we’re actually talking to NBC at the moment to see if there’s any possibility of rebooting the series. They’re looking into the basic question of who actually owns it? At the moment...

Imagine traveling back to January of 1990 and telling someone who had just seen Tremors that the Kevin Bacon-led film about monstrous, subterranean worm creatures would spawn a franchise that would last for at least three decades. As great as the beloved creature feature is, it’s still surprising that sequels are being churned out after all these years, especially with such a clear-cut concept ripe for opportunists in a climate of remakes and reboots, and it’s a testament to the lasting strength of the original film, from its tight writing and narrative focus to its charming cast of characters to the practical effects work that brought the Graboids to life, that diehard fans still embrace the franchise as a whole.
Though Tremors was released in theaters, everything that came after it was relegated to the direct-to-video market, starting with Tremors 2: Aftershocks in 1996, which introduced the heat-seeking Shriekers into the mix.

Writing a character is no easy thing to do, much less one people can actually connect with. Most shows are crafted with multiple seasons in mind and during that run, some characters can become superfluous and get written out.
Other times, external circumstances play a pivotal role in the decision-making process of whether a characters gets to stay on or is kicked off a show.

When a TV show moves away from its core concept, it can either relight the spark or snuff it out completely...
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
The last thing any showrunner of a long-running TV series wants is for their show to turn stale. Episode after episode after episode for years and years of nothing but the same thing will soon have audiences turning off. So surely the answer is to keep the show fresh, right? Mix things up a bit, change things around a bit, maybe even reboot the show and send it in a new direction? That’ll keep audiences happy!
Well, maybe. Rebooting or reinventing a show is a delicate thing, and there’s always a risk that audiences will simply long for the glory days when the show felt like the series they fell in love with. Shows that move...

According to a recent report from Soapcentral, we’re about to see a new male arrive on the scene for CBS’s hit soap opera show “The Bold And The Beautiful.” The crew has decided to hire former Happy Days actor Don Most (above) to come on and play a character named Pete. If any of you watch Happy Days, Don played character Ralph Malph on the show. Getting back to the Pete character, Soapcentral says he’ll be a handyman that arrives to help spruce up the Spectra Fashions building after a fire breaks out. Don recently talked to TV Insider and gave them a little more intel about his Pete role saying, “It's an old building and there's something very dicey going on with the electrical wiring. Pete keeps telling them he's no expert, but they don't want to spring for a real electrician. And then they hire him back a second time!

Sad, sad news today. Actor and radio host Jerry Doyle, fondly remembered in these parts for playing chief of security Michael Garibaldi in Babylon 5, has passed away.
Doyle played Chief Warrant Officer Garibaldi on the sci-fi show throughout its run, first appearing in 1993 TV movie Bablylon 5: The Gathering. His other small-screen appearances included guest spots in Homefront, Renegade, Sliders and NYPD Blue. It was as the host of a nationally syndicated radio show that he found an enthusiastic audience in recent years.
His family made the announcement via his Facebook page, informing followers that the cause of his death was as yet unknown. A flood of tributes is steadily arriving there, many of them from fans praising his wit, thoughtfulness and kindness.

As The Shannara Chronicles comes to the UK, we chat to and Lord Of The Rings and Indiana Jones actor, John Rhys-Davies…
Interviewing John Rhys-Davies is like trying to alter the flow of a mighty torrent with a teacup. Scoop as hard as you like in any given direction, and on it gushes with tremendous force, following its own course and making a wonderful spectacle as it goes.
Best known for his role as Gimli, son of Gloin in Peter Jackson’s Lord Of The Rings trilogy, Davies’ six decades-long career includes the roles of Sallah in the Indiana Jones films and Professor Arturo in Fox’s Sliders, a show he didn’t depart from happily after a network-orchestrated change in writing personnel.

3.5 History Rhymes
From the outset, History Rhymes was a much slicker and tighter narrative than we’ve been graced with so far this season.
The centre-piece is the often turbulent relationship between Nolan and Irisa, and how they’re now bonded together to share a common memory collection.
It might seem somewhat late in the process to give Nolan more backstory, but as this progressed, his failings and Irisa's were better revealed. As it went on, I began to wonder if Irisa is actually more guilt-ridden than Nolan, but surely the point is that only these two characters can understand the pain of the other, even if they’re not exactly bonding right now.
The only problem with the memory sequences was that taken out...

From Star Trek: Generations through to Star Trek: Nemesis - here are 47 nerdy spots in the Next Generation films...
Since Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979, the Star Trek cinematic outings have proved to be a smorgasbord of references and famous actors (or those who would go on to be), and often had complex behind the scenes events that stopped some rather, ahem, fascinating moments making it to the final version. We found lots of nerdy spots in the first six films here.
This time out we look at the films featuring the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation and choose 47 factoids. Granted, there's a lot more than that of interest, but we've tried for ones that you might not be aware of.

Ouarzazate, Morocco. Officially, the Moroccan city of Ouarzazate is nicknamed "The door of the desert," resting south of the High Atlas Mountains and on the edge of the Draa Valley. Thanks to the presence of Atlas Studios, though, Ouarzazate is perhaps more appropriately known as The Hollywood of Central Morocco, or perhaps even The Hollywood of Morocco. Ouarzazate has a population of just over 50,000, but in late October of 2014, that population includes a disproportionate number of Jesuses, Judases and an absurd number of Marys, both Jesus' mom and of the Magdalene variety. It's late October of 2014 and Ouarzazate is the beating heart of TV's Biblical world. "It's a very holy town right now," laughs Haaz Sleiman, one of the Ouarzazate Jesi -- Yes, that should be the name of a fantasy baseball team -- specifically playing the title role in National Geographic's "Killing Jesus," the project that has brought me to this region.
