Enhanced retired cop Alex Rain is visited in jail by his ex boss Commissioner Farnsworth. Commissioner Farnsworth enlists Alex for a important job and informs Alex that his former partner Jared (Also enhanced) has gone rogue and has joined a terrorist organization known as The Red Army Hammerheads and she has stolen vital data on a upcoming conference between the American and Japanese governments and is delivering the stolen data to The Red Amy Hammerheads and Farnsworth wants Alex to go after Jared and stop her from delivering the stolen data to The Red Army Hammerheads. However, a reluctant Alex is forced to do the job when Farnsworth reveals he had a bomb implanted in his heart and Farnsworth will have the bomb removed if he succeeds and gives Alex 72 hours. Alex travels to Shang-Lu in search of Jared. At a rundown hotel in Shang-Lu, Alex meets Jared's contact Julian who informs Alex that Jared is dead but her disc containing her memory is intact and that he can talk to her and Farnsworth and his men arrive at the hotel and Julian remains behind to hold them off and allow Alex to escape. Alex learns from Jared that Commissioner Farnsworth is dead and he has been replaced by a cyborg and that the Red Army Hammerheads are not terrorists and are rebels and that The Red Army Hammerheads are fighting to stop the Farnsworth cyborg and other cyborgs from replacing politicians with cyborgs so they can rule the world and Alex realizes the Farnsworth cyborg was using him as an assassin so he can detonate the bomb in his heart so he can kill Jared and the Red Army Hammerheads and had no intention of removing the bomb from his heart. Learning what is at stake, Alex joined by a young woman named Max Impact sets off to the Red Army Hammerhead base to deliver Jared's memory disc which contains the stolen data. But, Farnsworth and his cyborgs are in pursuit and Alex and Max race against time to deliver Jared's memory disc to the Red Army Hammerheads and stop Farnsworth from detonating the bomb in Alex's heart.
In Japan, an unique cut was released on Laserdisc only that features several new and/or alternate scenes that can't be found anywhere else. The origin of this special cut is somehow nondistinctive. Apart from several extended action sequences, this Japanese version features an alternate and darker ending.
Yes. In the original ending, Alex and Max escape, without a final confronation with the Farnsworth cyborg and after Alex reads the real Farnsworth's letter, Alex and Max are seen walking away by the Farnsworth cyborg. An unseen female voice asks the Farnsworth cyborg, if they should go after them. Farnsworth replies "Why not?".
