One of ABC's flashiest new shows of the 2024 season, Doctor Odyssey, is a throwback to 1970s TV shows like The Love Boat that told anthology stories involving huge guest star actors. That's no surprise, given it comes from superstar producer Ryan Murphy, who draws on his connections for some fun drama. The main focus is on the titular luxury cruise ship that takes passengers on amazing week-long trips.

Doctor Odyssey actor Sean Teale feels genuine affection for his character Tristan in the ABC medical drama.

“I’m very defensive of him. I like him a lot,” the British actor tells The Hollywood Reporter. “You have to love the person that you’re playing, in a way. I’ve always found that’s been the helpful thing for me.”

Ryan Murphy has a television empire for a reason: The man knows how to make juicy, watchable TV. Ryan Murphy’s latest procedural set sail on ABC last week and, so far, the premiere episode has tallied 13.6M cross-platform viewers in its first week, Disney says. That’s an impressive 230% increase over the episode’s live + same-day audience of 4.13M.

This is a monster start for Doctor Odyssey. While most broadcast series grow their audiences quite significantly in the week after they air, once episodes become available on streaming, it is fairly rare for an episode to average 10M viewers in that time frame — let alone blow right past it.

Within three days of viewing, the cruise ship drama had already delivered 7.59M viewers, making it ABC’s best drama premiere in four years, according to Disney. And after its first full day on Hulu, it was No. 1 on the streamer’s Top 15 Today list, and it has remained there since.

On Wednesday, Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken asked audiences to investigate the macabre with their FX horror series, “Grotesquerie.” Shifting gears towards the more pleasant side of humanity, the same series creators premiered a new medical drama the following night called “Doctor Odyssey.” Starring Joshua Jackson as Dr. Max Bankman, his Yale-educated doctor is tasked with handling emergency medical cases aboard a luxury cruise ship.

In the opening few minutes of the show’s premiere, Dr. Bankman is introduced getting dressed for his first day of work to the tune of Smokey Robinson’s “Cruisin’.” Taking on a new job can often be an intimidating endeavor, but this doctor likes to wear Hawaiian shirts, and you just know he’s easygoing. Post-covid, he traverses the next phase of his life by boarding The Odyssey, a beautifully designed and cultured cruise liner filled with honeymooners and vacationing retirees.

Ryan Murphy has had a hand in creating a string of very successful shows over the years. His new Doctor Odyssey show has been sandwiched between two very popular ABC shows, 9-1-1 and Grey's Anatomy. News of Doctor Odyssey’s creation has been tight-lipped leading up to its ABC premiere on Thursdays at 9/8C starting September 26.

Unlike other shows, like High Potential, which aired promos months ahead of their releases, Doctor Odyssey kept its secrets tight until just a month ago.

The total makes this the most-watched trailer for a new broadcast TV show ever. The prior record was held by This Is Us, which amassed a similar total over its first 11 days. The NBC series went on to have a very successful six-season run.

The top platform for Doctor Odyssey was TikTok, which accounted for 38.8M views on the official ABC channel alone, with Facebook coming up second with 23M. Back in 2016 when This Is Us premiered, TikTok was in its infancy, with the lion share of trailer viewing done on Facebook (50M in 11 days.)

Created by producer Ryan Murphy, the series features Joshua Jackson as Dr. Max Bankman, a once-superstar doctor who nearly died during the Covid-19 pandemic. The 46-year-old actor posed alongside co-stars Phillipa Soo, Don Johnson, and Sean Teale at the Doctor Odyssey premiere on Wednesday (Sept. 18) held at the Bel-Air Bay Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

The show’s guest stars Chord Overstreet, Kelsea Ballerini with boyfriend Chase Stokes, Laura Harrier, and Justin Jedlica were also in attendance along with creator Ryan Murphy.

ABC has released the trailer for Ryan Murphy’s new nautical medical drama “Doctor Odyssey” — starring Joshua Jackson — which premieres Sept. 26 and will be available on Hulu the following day.

According to the official logline, “Doctor Odyssey” Jackson plays Max, the “new on-board doctor for a luxury cruise ship where the staff works hard and plays harder. It’s all-hands-on-deck as Max and his small but mighty medical team navigate unique medical crises and each other, miles from shore.”

Other cast members include Sean Teale, Don Johnson and Phillipa Soo.
