Gangs Of Wasseypur is one of the most iconic films in Bollywood. It also brought massive fame to actors Pankaj Tripathi, Manoj Bajpayee, and Richa Chadha, among others. But did you know? The 2012 epic black comedy crime drama featured Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Faisal Khan. He portrayed the second on-screen son of Manoj Bajpayee (Sardar Khan) and Richa Chadha (Nagma Khatoon). His eccentric performance landed him the Special Jury Award at the 60th National Film Awards 2012.

Bollywood actor Manoj Bajpayee spilled some beans about the ‘cloth-washing’ scene in ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’. He shared: “Actually the whole scene was improvised during Reema Sen’s auditions. One day I was called by Anurag ji (Kashyap) to accompany him for the audition. For the same, he had asked me to stand in the same frame as Reema where only he (Anurag) could see me.”
Manoj, who is known for his works in films such as ‘Satya’, ‘Kaun?’, ‘Shool’, ‘Raajneeti’, ‘Aligarh’ is appearing on ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ with the entire cast of ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’.
He further recalled shooting for a sequence and added how the director instructed the entire sequence: “So while Reema was washing the clothes in the scene, Anurag suddenly instructed me to enter the sequence and I was a little surprised but followed whatever he said. Later on, after watching the film, we realised that...

In our second article to synopsize on of our tributes, we take a look at the movies we managed to review as part of our tribute to Tamil cinema, in chronological order
1. Donkey in a Brahmin Village
Although it is now seen as one of the pioneering works of the South Indian New Wave, “Donkey in a Brahmin Village” was banned in Tamil Nadu in order to preserve the fragile sentiments of the Brahmin community who were unwilling to be presented with evidence of their own crimes. Fortunately, time has proven that Abraham’s work is a vital piece of cinematic genius. He combines flashes of surrealism and mythological meditations to rightly indict those who have used their privilege to oppress and destroy, burning all of us in the flames of revolution. Inspired loosely by the historical decline of the Tamil Chola dynasty and the rise of the Tamil Pandya dynasty, “Aayinathi Oruvan” is another epic classic coming out of the Tamil movie industry, which faced, though, a lot of issues before reaching the light of day. Among the many problems, including the leaving of a number of key members of the initial cast and crew, with the drama continued even after the ending of the shooting, with Rambo Rajkumar, the film’s stunt director, dying. Nevertheless, the result was exceptional, with Selvaraghavan’s insistence to finish the movie no matter what, eventually paying off. The review is on the uncut 180 minute version.

SandalwoodChiranjeevi's family, the film fraternity and fans will celebrate the late star's birth anniversary on October 17. Digital NativeKannada star Chiranjeevi Sarja’s untimely demise in June this year has left a deep void in the film industry, with his family, friends and fans in deep shock. Recently, the internet was flooded with pics of his wife Meghana Raj’s baby shower function with a cut-out of the late star beside her. On October 17th, Chiranjeevi’s family, the film fraternity and fans are set to celebrate this birth anniversary and there are two reasons to look forward to it. The theatres are set to reopen with the state government relaxing the lockdown rules and Chiranjeevi’s Shivarjuna will re-release on the eve of his birth anniversary. ReviewThe film seems to be a copy-paste of the Tamil film 'Giri' with some changes here and there.Aravind ShwethaChiranjeevi Sarja is undoubtedly the busiest actor in Sandalwood. In the last 50 days, he has had three releases. In January, it was Khakhi, in February it was Aadya, and now Shivarjuna. He has four movies lined up and at this rate, he may soon break movie release-related records. Known for his action films, Chiranjeevi is also called the “king of remakes”. Of the 22 films he has acted in, including his cameo appearances, 14 of them are remakes. Fortunately (or unfortunately?!), Shivarjuna, directed by Shiva Tejass, is not a remake, but the content is a copy-paste of several Telugu films and one particular Tamil film with minor tweaks. Shiva (Chiranjeevi) is a short-tempered man. He, along with a doctor (Sadhu Kokila) and his assistants - Kuri Pratap, Shivraj Kr Pete, Akshata Srinivas – are all living in a PG.

TollywoodThe writing gets a bigger thumbs-up than the performances of the leads, played by Akhil and Kalyani.Karthik Keramalu Hello_poster_3x2.jpgWhile I was watching Vikram Kumar’s concoction of destiny-and-serendipity, I was reminded of the decade-and-a-half-old Manasantha Nuvve starring Uday Kiran and Reema Sen. The soul of Hello and Manasantha Nuvve belong to the same body. A young boy and girl become friends, and are separated within a short period of time as the girl moves to another city (because of her father’s job) and the boy gets adopted by wealthy parents. If you haven’t guessed why the boy gets adopted, you are probably new to Telugu cinema’s storytelling techniques. Let me break it down for you – the kid is from the streets and has a heart of gold. Ramya Krishnan, who has paired up with Akhil Akkineni’s father (Nagarjuna) several times, puts on the face of a mother who yearns to be called “Amma” as her adopted son, Avinash (Akhil), calls her aunty. It takes him a lot of time to call her “Amma” as familial connections are alien to him. These sentimental touches, which are aplenty in the movie, work well within the scope of the narrative. Another favorite of mine was the phrase “I hate you”. No, it’s not the literal meaning that comes into play here. Once upon a time, Avinash, in his school-going days, witnesses his mom throwing the “I hate you” sentence at his dad (Jagapati Babu) when she catches him smoking. Avinash, who doesn’t understand the words, asks his mom about it. The explanation that she comes up with is excellent. Of course, it turns into a tiring in-joke as they keep repeating it throughout the movie. But, that dialogue does great justice to the scenes. Akhil’s debut movie, titled Akhil, ate more than it could digest and the results turned out to be negative. Almost every department in the actor’s previous film tanked. Hello changes it all. Call it Vikram Kumar’s charm, or destiny if you will, Hello has action, romance, and comedy in equal proportions. Though the romance sequences feel gooey, the movie promises bucket loads of cool action. The parkour-style choreography, especially, deserves whistles. Hello, in fact, takes off immediately after the hero-introduction song with a chase-and-fight episode. For some of the scenes, the camera seems to have been attached to the body of the person performing the stunts (à la the 2015 film Hardcore Henry). Hello welcomes newcomer Kalyani, daughter of filmmaker Priyadarshan and actor Lissy, with a role that kind of flies away with the arrival of strong winds. Her baby-looks help her pull off the character she’s given easily, yet her inexperience in handling humour and romance shows on her face. To an extent, the same goes for Akhil. Since the movie depends more on the themes of soul-mate and destiny, the inefficiency of the leads didn’t prick me too much. And when the storytelling doesn’t leave any time for the viewer to ponder over the nitty-gritties, it’s better to enjoy the fun the movie delivers. Nevertheless, more than the chemistry created by the adult versions of Seenu and Priya (Akhil and Kalyani respectively), the innocence and gullibility of the actors who played their younger versions stood out. Vikram Kumar, the main man behind Hello, is on a roll. Yavarum Nalam, Ishq, Manam, 24, and now Hello – all these movies belong to different tried-and-tested genres. Still, he works around them and bakes something good every time. His association with Anup Rubens, composer, and P. S. Vinod, cinematographer, is reaping wonderful benefits. The score and visuals add weight to the proceedings. If Akhil shines under the hands of brilliant filmmakers, he’ll have a chance at taking the Akkineni legacy forward along with his brother, Naga Chaitanya. And Kalyani should watch herself on screen and learn what’s missing from her performance. That might give her ideas for her upcoming films. A tale of revenge, a tale of family, a tale of India that is Anurag Kashyap’s epic Gangs of Wasseypur (Gow). Based on a true story, the blood-and-bullets fueled crime saga charts seventy years in the lives – and spectacular deaths – of two mafia-like families fighting for control of the coal-mining town of Wasseypur, India.
Though made as one film with a final 5-hour plus runtime, the film was separated into two sequential sagas for release. Produced by Guneet Monga, Gow premiered in 2012 at the esteemed Cannes Film Festival, and went on to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival, Sundance, and the London Indian Film Festival, among many others, to amazing reviews and even some standing ovations. Gow released in India later in 2012, again to rave reviews.

Ever since I started covering the Hindi film industry, I have heard artists complaining how tough it's for "outsiders" to succeed in showbiz and what a cakewalk it is for star kids. Contrary to popular belief, however, star kids too have to slog it out to win star status - and it's a journey where only a few succeed.
The success to failure ratio of youngsters from film families just goes to prove that the legacy edge is nothing more than a myth.
Consider some of the actors who came riding on the shoulders of their family names: Abhishek Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Uday Chopra, Tanisha Mukherjee, Esha Deol, Fardeen Khan, Zayed Khan, Puru Raj Kumar, Riya and Reema Sen, Twinkle and.

Reema Sen, who was last seen in Anurag Kashyap's Gangs of Wasseypur as the feisty Durga, is all set to become a Mommy! The actress, who married restaurateur Shiv Karan Singh earlier this year in March, is pregnant and expecting her first child. Needless to say, Reema will be taking a short break from acting now for a while taking care of her health.

Reema Sen is an actress who recently appeared in the highly-acclaimed film “Gangs of Wasseypur I”. She started off with modeling and also appeared in the music video for the song “Chandni Raatein”. She made an appearance in Telugu and Tamil films in the year 2000 and has been a successful actress in the industry down south. Her Telugu film “Chitram” in which she starred opposite Uday Kiran was a blockbuster. Tamil films Minnale and Rendu too have been successful. How fitting, in a year that has seen a restored version of Sergio Leone’s embattled, multigenerational gangster epic Once Upon a Time in America, that a new, Leone-influenced masterpiece from India arrives on North American shores. Gangs of Wasseypur, a five-hour, two-part, wildly blood-drenched saga is, without question, one of the must-sees at the Toronto International Film Festival. Director Anurag Kashyap’s work is also – whether taken together, or separately – among 2012’s best.
The first installment opens on a television screen, and a subtitle telling us the soundtrack is “[Popular Indian soap theme music].” The serene scene erupts with gunfire for a remarkably appropriate start; Gangs is, in a sense, one long soap opera, with the occasional glossiness quickly ripped apart by bullets. The gunfight is kinetic and explosive, and completely chaotic; we have no sense of who is who, who is “good” or “bad,” or why any of this is occurring. Confused? Don...

Part 1 of director Anurag Kashyap’s sprawling family saga of power and revenge did two very important things: it introduced the character of Faizal Khan (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), and it left me with a definite appetite to see Part 2. I had the chance to do just that a screening held in advance of the presentation of both parts at Tiff 2012.
Part 2 begins where Part 1 left off, with the death of Sardar Khan (Manoj Bajpai). Part 2 sees his eldest son, Danish (Vineet Kumar), begin to take over the reins, and exact punishment for his father’s assassination, but he soon is taken down by Sultan Qureshi (Pankaj Tripathi). Thus it falls to the perpetually stoned Faizal to step up and exact revenge – a role that no one, not even his mother Nagma (“Look at your eyes, dead with drugs,” she tells him), feels he is fit for.

Today the Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff) announced the much-anticipated line-up for the fourth edition of the City to City programme, a series designed as an “exploration of the urban experience, highlighting the best in emerging cinematic talent in a particular locale.” It’s been no secret that the spotlight this year would be placed squarely on Mumbai, as confirmed earlier this year by the festival’s Artistic Director, Cameron Bailey.
“Mumbai’s cinema today is entirely different from what it was even a few years ago. The rise of independent cinema has shifted the terrain, probing into previously taboo subjects and adopted styles that were earlier unpalatable to the Indian audience,” said Bailey. “Mumbai’s film industry is going through a significant change and a strong group of new filmmakers has emerged. They’re representing the evolution of their city in an interesting way. Toronto audiences are in for a treat this fall.

Among all of India’s filmmakers today Anurag Kashyap is perhaps the only one whose films insist on being watched in a multiplex. Every other filmmaker’s efforts only merit DVD viewing. Since I have been so drawn to his films that I have journeyed to see them, I was quite excited when Gangs of Wasseypur was announced. I then took stock of what his films meant to me but, curiously enough, while Black Friday (2004) still largely remained in my memory, I retained only a few scattered images from Dev D (2009) and Gulaal (2009). The ‘avant-garde’ effort No Smoking (2007), of course, always struck me as babble but was there something lacking in the other two films that I recollected them so little?
Anurag Kashyap’s chief strength is his sharp eye for the milieu but his films also seem curiously blank – as if there was little else underneath surface. Since his style is so visceral,...

Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur is a magnificent saga and a visual delight! For a revenge-drama spanning decades and chronicling generations, it does extremely well and engages the audience. The hero (here antihero) of the first part of the film is Sardar Khan (Manoj Bajpai) whose mission in life is to seek revenge from Ramadhir Singh (Tigmanshu Dhulia) who had killed his father. In that sense, it is a typical revenge story but the sheer magnitude of the tale and the settings make it appear grand. After a lengthy introduction of his ancestors through voiceovers and archival videos, the film settles down to tell the story of Sardar Khan and his revenge.
The film is full of gut-wrenching violence, bloodbath and expletives. Despite that,...

Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs Of Wasseypur has certainly taken the world by storm and it in fact does not open officially in theaters until tomorrow! It premiered at the prestigious Cannes film festival and received a standing ovation. Last night, it had its UK premiere at the London Indian Film Festival and once again audiences were blown away with the power of the film. We were able to catch the director the day before the Liff screening for a very quick chat about Gangs of Wasseypur.

The tabloids may be busy writing all sorts of nonsense about Ash and her baby-weight but the new Mom didn’t let any of that take a toll on her confidence at the event.
It was a flowing maxi for Ash for a photo call at the festival. Gotta love everything about this look especially the hair!
Another maxi was chosen for interviews on the rooftop. This time a Robert Cavalli animal print one. Sadly this one just didn’t work as well as the last. Maybe the multiple layers were an overkill.
Going for the Bachchan household designer duo Abu Jain and Sandeep Khosla was Ash at the amfAR gala. Definitely the worst choice she made at this years festival. The flow of the saree (if that is infact what it is!) was simply unattractive and that blouse was such an eye sore and completely overbearing.

Actress Andrea is busy shaking her legs day and night. Know what? The actress has joined a dance class to develop the skills. Making her debut with ‘Pacchaikili Muthucharam’, Andrea never had an opportunity to dance. Even in the most overpowering song of ‘Oh Eesa’ of ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’, it was Reema Sen, who had more footage to dance. However, Andrea hasn’t given up the hope and is now vigorously gaining those skills.
The actress is now shooting for her upcoming film ‘Idhu Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam’, in which she shares the screen space with Dhanush. The film is directed by Selvaraghavan and is produced by his father Kasthoori Raja under the banner of Rk Productions.
The rumors about her affairs with Selvaraghavan have slightly got trivialized on its course and maybe, soon after the release, things may catch up again.

Why don’t our filmmakers offer chances to the existing talented Tamil speaking actresses? Say for instance, actress Karthika happens to be a good looking girl with simple traits and has more potentials to strike spectacularly.
But we just want to list series of few actresses, who were terribly unsuccessful in Bollywood and somehow made it big in Tamil film industry…
We aren’t specific about any actresses, but you should have a blatant idea about how it has been happening all over these years.
Simran, Jyothika, Reema Sen were the most unsuccessful heroines of Bollywood, who were thrown out of film industry in Hindi with their debut flop – Simran with ‘Tere Mere Sapne’, Jyothika with ‘Doli Saja Ki Rakna’. On pars, Namitha has been the worst of all actresses who hardly shows her assets. Maybe, she’s the highest googled actress, not for those who are so transfixed with her acting.
