In the American indie explosion of the 1990s, few filmmakers had a more compelling story than Robert Rodriguez. The Texan communications major had spent his time in college crafting homemade shorts and parlayed his enthusiasm into a feature he funded by raising a paltry $9,000, most of it gained from signing up for pharmaceutical drug tests. Shooting in the northern Mexican town of Ciudad Acuña, Rodriguez managed to push El Mariachi past the finish line under budget, pocketing nearly two grand of his meager put-up cash. Initially aiming to release the neo-western action film directly to the Spanish-language VHS market, Rodriguez got up the chutzpah to submit it to major Hollywood studios, one of which, Columbia Pictures, bought the rights and secured festival and theatrical exhibition.

The Humble Beginnings of a Master Emmanuel Lubezki is one of the most decorated cinematographers currently working, having garnered three back-to-back Academy Awards for Best Cinematography — an unprecedented feat and something of a victory lap for a man who had become highly sought after by the time the 2010s rolled around. Cinematographers often take the back seat compared to the directors they work alongside, but Lubezki has the privilege of both being a gifted cameraman and having collaborated with some of the finest filmmakers in or out of Hollywood: Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Terrence Malick, Tim Burton, the Coen Brothers, just to name a few. Lubezki started out, perhaps most consistently, as Cuarón’s go-to cinematographer, with their careers basically starting out conjoined at the hip; with Cuarón’s debut feature, ‘Sólo con tu pareja,’ in 1991, Lubezki was unleashed upon the world — only not quite. He would work with...

Tim Blake Nelson is about to shoot a “spectacular” Western “Shoot” in Spain, directed by Guillermo Navarro. Guillermo Del Toro’s regular cinematographer, he already won an Academy Award for “Pan’s Labyrinth.”
“We have a great cast and a script written by British writer Ian Wilson. Westerns change, reflecting a cultural moment when it’s made. ‘Yellowstone,’ ‘Power of the Dog’… each generation needs to furnish its own take on film genres. This one is about the power of the gun as a corrupting force,” he reveals.
“It’s absolutely a current script, but it’s 100% true to its time. We are starting to shoot in November. The great thing about Westerns is that they require big vistas, but good Westerns don’t have to cost $100 million. We made ‘Old Henry’ for $1.2 million. It’s a way of having a superhero film with natural environments and no visual effects.”

“We like crime shows, at least some of us do,” writer and producer Chris Brancato told IndieWire. “We like gangster shows. We like watching people do the things that we would never do ourselves. And yet, they’ve all been done a million times.”
His own oeuvre seems to support that — but only at first glance. The creator of “Narcos,” “Godfather of Harlem,” and now MGM+’s “Hotel Cocaine” would seem to have found a very buzzy (buzzed?) niche for himself as the prestige crime saga guy. But there’s more going on than just blow.
With “Narcos,” Brancato insisted to Netflix that the actors speak in Spanish, just as the real-life characters did. And “Godfather of Harlem” opened itself up to him once he discovered that Malcolm X was friends with crime boss Bumpy Johnson. And with “Hotel Cocaine,” he takes audiences on a bumpy ride from the highs...

When it premiered on Netflix, Narcos became a massive hit. Following the rise of Pablo Escobar as the most powerful drug lord in Latin America, the series came from co-creators Chris Brancato, Carlo Bernard, and Doug Miro. Since the three-season series ended, we have gotten a Mexico-set spin-off and the promise of more. The creators have gone their separate ways with Miro running Netflix series Griselda, also based on a true story about the infamous title queenpin. Now, Brancato has reunited with Narcos director Guillermo Navarro for a new series, Hotel Cocaine, also inspired by a true crime tale but heavily fictionalized for a pulpy good time.

Hotel Cocaine premieres tonight at 9/8c on MGM+.
The series tosses us back to the glitz, glamour, and high-profile crime of Miami in 1978.
It highlights the Latino influence on our culture and our values, but not in the way that you might think.
For this series, creator and executive producer Chris Brancato and executive producer and director Guillermo Navarro use the background we know so well to highlight a sense of family and commitment that sours through the community.
We talked with them and the cast to get a thorough understanding of the series, which we have seen almost in its entirety.

Sofia Vergara and Netflix are at the center of a new lawsuit filed by late Griselda Blanco’s children over upcoming limited true crime series “Griselda.”
Lead star and executive producer Vergara is named in the suit that alleges the series uses Blanco’s family’s images and likenesses without proper authorization. TMZ first reported the legal filing. IndieWire has reached out to Vergara’s representatives and Netflix for comment.
Vergara responded to the pending legal claim in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, saying of playing Blanco, “I’m trying to understand her from the beginning. I started from being fascinated by her, because she achieved many things that it was impossible for a woman to achieve, even though they were horrific.”
“Griselda” creator Eric Newman added, “It’s not my first rodeo. The Escobar family made similar claims [for the TV series ‘Narcos’]. We had a very specific story we wanted to tell. I believe we told it,...

Few filmmakers have been more outspoken about their passion for animation than Guillermo del Toro, who has long advocated for the medium to be revered with the same gravitas as live-action filmmaking. Speaking to the press backstage after winning the Oscar for Best Animated Feature for “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” the director once again called for the industry to hold animators up as serious artists.
“It’s important that animation is done by people who are given license, who are given permission to be treated as artists, not just technicians,” del Toro said. “This is an artform that has been kept, commercially and artistically, in the kids table for so long.”
After offering his support to animators, del Toro opined about the racism that he has faced at various points in his career as a Mexican filmmaker. He recalled a conversation in the 1990s in which a movie producer...

Edward Berger‘s “All Quiet on the Western Front” is, of course, not the first adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque‘s 1929 bestselling novel to be in Oscar contention. The 1930 adaptation, directed by Lewis Milestone, topped the 3rd Academy Awards, becoming the first film to win Best Picture and Best Director. It was nominated for two other awards, Best Cinematography and Best Writing (as it was known at the time), but lost both. Can Berger’s version win the two categories that Milestone’s lost?
Well, it’s favored to win one so far. After “Top Gun: Maverick’s” shocking snub in cinematography, a category it dominated on the critics circuit, “All Quiet,” lensed by James Friend, slid into pole position in the odds ahead of “Elvis,” “TÁR,” “Empire of Light” and “Bardo.” It was snubbed by the American Society of Cinematographers Awards — no ASC snubbee has won the Oscar since...

Created and executive produced by Guillermo del Toro, the anthology series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities made its debut on the Netflix streaming service last month, the first season of the show consisting of eight episodes that were directed by the likes of Vincenzo Natali (Cube), Guillermo Navarro (Godfather of Harlem), David Prior (The Empty Man), Ana Lily Amirpour (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night), Keith Thomas (The Vigil), Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen), Panos Cosmatos (Mandy), and Jennifer Kent (The Babadook). Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities hasn’t yet been renewed for another season, but del Toro has a list of directors he wants to work with on season 2 if it happens. During an interview with IndieWire, he revealed some of the names that are on that list.
Del Toro said, “I have a list. For example, we tried to get Jayro Bustamente before and he couldn’t because of Covid.

Acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro unlocks his "Cabinet Of Curiosities" and invites the viewer to behold a nightmarish menagerie of terror. Across eight episodes, ghoulish monsters come to life and worm their way into your brain and inspire nightmares to last a lifetime. Each episode is directed by a different filmmaker, who brings their perspective to the screen. Directors Guillermo Navarro, Panos Cosmatos, Vincenzo Natali, Catherine Hardwicke, David Prior, Ana Lily Amirpour, Keith Thomas, and Jennifer Kent delight in the terrifying and showcase the marvels of horror storytelling.
Whether it's literal monsters or the decay of humanity, "Cabinet of Curiosities" savors the disturbing. It's not only that the series fuels our nightmares with alien invasions and lotion monsters. There are also razor-sharp discussions about our obsession with beauty, greed, and grief that curdle and chill the blood. Gather 'round Del Toro's cabinet and behold the many grotesque wonders kept therein.

Created and executive produced by Guillermo del Toro, the anthology series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities is now available to watch in its entirety, as all eight episodes have been released through the Netflix streaming service. And director Vincenzo Natali would like you to know that there is a black and white version of his episode Graveyard Rats on there as well. You just have to go searching for it a little bit.
Natali took to Twitter to inform us, “A reminder: Graveyard Rats is available in glorious Black & White in the ‘Trailers & More’ section of the Netflix Cabinet of Curiosities menu. I like the color version but this is the way I intended it to be viewed. Colin Hoult’s cinematography is gorgeous.“
Here’s the info on that particular episode:

The thing about a cabinet is that not every item inside is going to serve the same purpose. There are knick-knacks that will sit unused for a while. Other pieces are designed to looked at and never touched. Next to both could be some beloved keepsakes that get brought out when the time is right.
Sure, it’s a strained metaphor, but all those really do apply to “Cabinet of Curiosities,” the Netflix collection of horror stories assembled by producer/writer/host Guillermo del Toro. The series has all the double-edged freedom of anthology. Give talented storytellers the chance to bring these stories to life in their own way and you’ll inherently get installments that squish up against each other like puzzle pieces from mismatched sets.
But that’s part of the excitement, too. The promise of “Cabinet of Curiosities” is that, at the start of each story, anything could happen.

Episodic anthologies in the entertainment age of “content” are a tricky proposition. Crafting unique and compelling narratives is a challenge unto itself, made all the more difficult when creators have to start from scratch every episode… a notion that bucks against modern audiences’ inclination toward serialized stories. If viewers aren’t watching a movie, they want their favorite characters to keep them company for days and days (if not weeks and months). Merely making each episode longer isn’t the answer either, as hourlong anthologies have proven especially hit-or-miss. Where 30-minute entries (like many in “Room 104” and “Roar”) can be quick and cutting, a doubled runtime can result in bloat, banality, or both.
Sure, there are exceptions to the rule. “Black Mirror” became a streaming sensation (albeit after being developed outside of L.A.’s studio system), and “The Twilight Zone” remains the format’s gold standard (released back...

This article contains spoilers for Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities: “Lot 36.”
Talk to just about anyone involved with Netflix horror anthology series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities long enough and EC Comics will eventually come up.
The namesake of the show himself, Academy Award-winning director and monster enthusiast Guillermo del Toro, has freely spoken of his love for the classic mid-20th century comic imprint, telling The Austin Chronicle earlier this year that “I remember when I was a kid being very scared by Graham Ingels of EC Comics.”
From 1944 to 1956, EC Comics (or Entertaining Comics) published hundreds of issues of comics in genres like crime, satire, fantasy, and most importantly: horror. EC’s style was distinctive, inspiring a whole generation of horror storytellers and respectful modern copycat endeavors like Tales from the Crypt (which borrowed its title from EC) and Creepshow. Frequently, EC Comics were known for their shock endings,...

In addition to being a beloved and Oscar-winning director, Guillermo del Toro is also a relentless champion of other filmmakers, from his recent impassioned Twitter defense of Martin Scorsese against a dismissive essay to his years-ago commentary track for his monster movie “Mimic” where he offers an unsolicited and enthusiastic recommendation of the film’s two direct-to-video sequels. So while plenty of other figures might be adept at filling an Alfred Hitchcock-style role as a impresario of ghoulish tales, it feels particularly fitting to see del Toro lend both his name and personality to “Cabinet of Curiosities,” a Netflix anthology series where eight different filmmakers are given around an hour to tell a creepy and/or chilling and/or goopy horror story — primarily set in the past, though presumably that wasn’t a requirement.
This eclectic group of horror and horror-adjacent directors includes material that should be hotly anticipated by genre fans.

It feels like it took an unnaturally long time for Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities to exist. That’s partially on a literal level, because Netflix first ordered an anthology series from the Pan’s Labyrinth director back in May 2018, but it’s much more big-picture: In this ever-expanding TV universe, a horror anthology curated by an A-list director in the vein of Alfred Hitchcock Presents has obvious value and if you were going to find a 21st century equivalent for Hitch’s screen persona — aloof-yet-affable, authoritative-yet-inviting — del Toro is the first and only person to whom you’d go.

At their best, the films of Guillermo del Toro use the very fundamentals of storytelling — elements that would be familiar to an eager child — in order to convey ideas of startling power and sophistication. The tightly constructed fantasy story “The Shape of Water” is, beyond its attention-getting premise, all about what it feels like to finally be understood; last year’s badly underrated “Nightmare Alley” breaks out of its clean narrative lines, by the end, in order to deliver a startlingly raw howl of grief.
The del Toro touch, the ability to use technical excellence and clarity of vision in order to say something powerful, is missing in his work as a curator, though. Del Toro has, for Netflix, put together a suite of eight hourlong horror stories with directors who include Jennifer Kent (“The Babadook”), Ana Lily Amirpour (“A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night”), and del Toro collaborator...

Guillermo del Toro joins the ranks of episodic genre anthology curators like Alfred Hitchcock and Rod Serling with his “Cabinet of Curiosities.” Del Toro assembles a Murderers’ Row of horror filmmakers for his limited anthology series, each story contained within his ornate oddities cabinet. That singular, eponymous item doesn’t just anchor the anthology but serves as a visual representation of the type of vintage scary story collection that “Cabinet of Curiosities” unfurls.
Del Toro introduces each selected tale like a sophisticated carnival barker. A short monologue ensues as the genre maestro opens his cabinet and plucks out a representative item for each curated story along with a carved figurine of its director. Series creator and executive producer del Toro hand selected each story and director, uniting their distinct visions through a recurring theme of hidden, shifting realities. Guillermo del Toro knows a thing or two about ghosts, ghouls, and monsters, so the idea of the Academy Award-winning filmmaker shepherding a horror anthology series feels too good to be true and is too good to pass up. While del Toro himself doesn't helm any of the short films that are part of "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities," he does have a hand in writing some. And more than that, he serves as our host, stalking out of the shadows like Rod Serling on "Night Gallery." The filmmaker is no actor, and his introductions are quite stiff — but that's part of the charm. There's something sweet about this lovable artist doing his best to read ominous introductions while decked out in his best black suit, looking like an undertaker having a great time at a wake.

MGM‘s Epix is going through some changes. The platform’s voice is a bit deeper; hair is starting to grow in strange places, and a rebrand lays on the horizon. Today, premium and commercial-free linear and streaming service Epix announced that it will rebrand as MGM+ in January 2023, capitalizing on the network’s brand promise to provide premium cinematic television and a leading theatrical library.
While the rebrand means exciting changes are coming, MGM+ still plans to host portions of its in-demand content, like the third season of the award-winning Godfather of Harlem, Billy the Kid, the sci-fi horror thriller From, and dramas like Rogue Heroes and Belgravia. MGM+ will launch on January 15, 2023, alongside Godfather of Harlem’s third season.
“MGM is one of the most iconic and beloved brands from the golden age of entertainment,” said Michael Wright, head of MGM+. “This rebrand is a promise to existing...

Plus-2 streaming services with plus signs: Epix will be rebranded as MGM+ in January 2023, the company revealed Wednesday. Also Wednesday: Starz announced it will rebrand international streaming service Starzplay as Lionsgate+. We’re told this was coincidence but still, good grief.
While Lionsgate has long stated that it plans to sell or spin off Starz, Lionsgare also filed this SEC statement today: “Despite the volatile market environment, Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. remains on a path to separating our Starz and studio businesses. As negotiations progress, we have increased our focus on the possibility of spinning our studio business, creating a number of financial and strategic benefits. In that regard, we are continuing productive negotiations with prospective strategic and financial partners on both sides of our business.”
In other words, it still may sell or spin off Starz; or, it might spin off the Lionsgate studio instead. Decisions, decisions, which require buyers,...

There’s another plus in town – Epix is being rebranded as MGM+.
The cable network and streaming service is getting a new name and identity as well as a handful of new titles, as part of a relaunch set for January 2023.
MGM+ joins the likes of Disney+, Discovery+, Paramount+, ESPN+ and BET+ with the use of the symbol.
It comes five years after the vaunted Hollywood studio completed its acquisition of Viacom and Lionsgate’s stake in the business, giving it full control of the network, and five months after Amazon completed its own acquisition of MGM.
As part of the rebrand, the network, which will continue to be available in the U.S. on Prime Video, cable, telco, satellite, has handed out a number of greenlights.
Hotel Cocaine, which comes from Narcos’ Chris Brancato, has been handed an eight-episode order and Julian Fellowes’ British period drama Belgravia has been given a follow-up series.
