It’s been a few days since Ellen DeGeneres’ newest/supposedly last-ever stand-up special hit Netflix, but some of us are still processing it.
After all, there’s a lot to unpack in Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval, especially in its first few minutes. The opening sequence finds Ellen seemingly hallucinating her entire media history, before ultimately being swallowed up by a cyclone of negative headlines about her toxic workplace behavior, which were apparently torn out of newspapers from, like, the ‘70s? Do they know that Ellen wasn’t brought down by Woodward and Bernstein?
The special illustrates that the backlash against Ellen began with a tweet, which asked people to respond with “the most insane stories you’ve heard about Ellen being mean.” It was a real post, but For Your Approval made sure to obscure the text noting that the user would donate funds to the L.

Rub a little Vaseline on your teeth, fire up a hot latte, do a few mouth stretches and whisper, “It’s showtime!” That’s how the most powerful people in the podcasting business — a mix of hosts, executives and reps featured on THR‘s annual power list — ready themselves before recording their widely-heard shows. As part of this year’s survey, the group, which also includes Call Her Daddy‘s Alex Cooper, Bill Simmons, Ben Shapiro and My Favorite Murder co-hosts Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark, reveals its dream guests and guilty pleasure listens as well.
My pre-recording podcasting routine entails…
Bill Simmons, The Bill Simmons Podcast Big bottle of water, put my phone on silent, remind myself not to say anything dumb.
Karen Kilgariff, My Favorite Murder I feed the dogs, gather up all of my beverages (usually 4, 1 hot and 3 colds), rub some Vaseline on my teeth and as I log onto Zoom,...

Busy Philipps has good reason to believe in psychics.
“I’m psychic,” the “Freaks and Geeks” actor says during an appearance on the July 24 episode of the podcast “Ghosted! by Roz Hernandez.”
What?
“Well, I think I’m very intuitive, Philipps explains. “But sometimes I just know things are going to happen. I sort of just see things in the future and then I have a lot of really psychic connections with people.”
If that’s not enough bizarreness, “Ghosted!” host Hernandez says she and her best friend, “A Million Things” star Sam Pancake, once came face-to-face with a murderer while housesitting for Philipps. “You and Sam thwarted the murderer from coming to my home,” Philipps said.
Hernandez recalled, “I’m wandering my eyes around and I see a man starting into the window at me! It’s the thing I’ll never forget. I was staring him in the eyes.

Crime Junkie, the true-crime podcast led by THR Next Gen 2022 honoree Ashley Flowers, was the most popular show on Apple Podcasts this year, the tech giant said on Monday.
To populate the lists, Apple looked at user listenership and engagement between November 1, 2021, through Oct. 31, 2022. Crime Junkie, the flagship show of Flowers’ Audiochuck company, also took the top spots in the top followed and top shared categories, while Audiochuck was honored as the top free channel on Apple Podcasts for the year.
For podcast subscriptions, Morbid — a true-crime show hosted by Alaina Urquhart and Ashleigh Kelley that has an exclusive ad sales and one-week windowing deal with Wondery and Amazon Music — landed at No. 1. Wondery retained its spot as the top subscriber channel on the platform.

John Allen, the former Navy Seal and rising podcast star known as MrBallen, has struck a wide-reaching content deal with Amazon that will see his hit podcast become available exclusively on Amazon Music beginning on November 1.
With Allen, Amazon will have another true-crime star in its growing stable of podcasts, which includes Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes’ pandemic breakout SmartLess; Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark’s true-crime behemoth My Favorite Murder; and Guy Raz’s business savvy How I Built This. But unlike those shows, which have a one-week early distribution window on Amazon Music and Wondery+ before going wide on all platforms, Allen’s MrBallen Podcast: Strange, Dark and Mysterious Stories will be available to stream only on Amazon Music — and not even on Amazon’s podcast subsidiary Wondery.

Every now and then a movie comes along that feels like it is made for just me. A Life on the Farm ticks all of those boxes and is one of those films that I know if I talk about to any of my friends about they won’t quite understand what I’m talking about and why I am so enthusiastic about it. A Life on the Farm is definitely a movie you need to see to believe.
In simple terms, this found footage/documentary movie follows the life of farmer Charles Carson in the late 1990s, who often filmed and took photos of himself, his family and his animals. This footage was then edited by Charles and often hand-delivered to his neighbours so he could get their thoughts on the films he had made.

“It’s the end of an era,” podcast network Exactly Right tweeted in May 2022. “Jensen & Holes: The Murder Squad is going off the air.” The tweet set off dismayed speculation among the true crime community, and rightly so: The podcast, which launched in 2019, was a popular powerhouse of the genre, featuring Paul Holes, the now-retired detective who helped crack the Golden State Killer case, and Billy Jensen, who helped finish the 2018 bestseller, I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, that detailed the hunt for the serial killer, after author Michelle McNamara...

Bob Odenkirk and David Cross are putting the “cult” in cult comedy.
The former “Mr. Show” co-creators are reuniting for Paramount+ series “Guru Nation,” the streaming service announced February 1. Bill Odenkirk, who previously produced “Mr. Show,” is also attached to the upcoming half-hour, docu-style comedy series.
The “Better Call Saul” star and “Arrested Development” alum will play “rival cult gurus who manipulate the minds of their deluded followers,” per a press release. The series is set to be directed by Jason Woliner (“Borat 2”).
Cross tweeted, “After a year of having to be coy and secretive about this, it gives me great pleasure to let y’all know about this new project Bob and I are working on. It’s going to be unlike anything we’ve done so far. Get ready to have your pants blown wide open!”

This article avoids spoilers for everything but episode one of I’ll Be Gone in the Dark.
It’s clear from the very first episode of I’ll Be Gone in the Dark that this isn’t going to be like other true crime documentaries. Described as based on the book of the same name by Michelle McNamara, it’s more like a ‘making-of’ the book, a behind the scenes look at how the book got written with a strong focus on its author, the cops that wouldn’t let the case go, the amateur sleuths who helped, as well as the survivors of the East Area Rapist.
McNamara is a crime writer you might not necessarily be familiar with already if you’re not a true crime nut or indeed a ‘Murderino’. Directed by Liz Garbus who also made Netflix movie Lost Girls about The Long Island Serial Killer, episode one...

“I had a murder habit, and it was bad,” Michelle McNamara says early in the new HBO documentary series I’ll Be Gone in the Dark. “I would feed it for the rest of my life.”
Like many things McNamara said or wrote, these words prove sadly prophetic. An acclaimed true crime writer, McNamara unexpectedly died in 2016 at the age of 46 while trying to complete the book on which the HBO show is based, an epic account of the crimes of the man she dubbed the Golden State Killer. He had...

Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark are taking the summer off. They’re hanging out in Los Angeles, probably wearing matching caftans and decadently eating chicken fingers by Kilgariff’s pool. And why shouldn’t they? Since starting the wildly popular true crime podcast My Favorite Murder in early 2016, the hosts have not had a vacation.
That’s not to say they haven’t traveled. Hardstark overcame an extreme fear of flying so the pair could tour in Australia, Europe and Canada, doing live recordings in front of thousands of their...

Since 2016, podcast hosts Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark have been recounting gruesome crimes to each other weekly on My Favorite Murder. Their unabashed appreciation for the gorier things in life — plus quippy advice like “fuck politeness,” and frank talk about anxiety and mental health — draws thousands of fans, known as murderinos, to their sold-out live shows all over the world. Kilgariff, a comedian, and Hardstark, a former Cooking Channel TV personality, released a joint memoir in May called Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered, borrowing its title from the duo...

Led by Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong, “Tuca and Bertie” sports a truly interesting voice cast with some genuine surprises in the mix, including Oscar nominees, Emmy winners, and British TV favorites. The animated adventures of two best bird friends, created by Lisa Hanawalt, takes some sad and dark turns, but the actors prove more than capable of handling the challenges, bringing out the inherent humanity in their animal creations on screen.
The large ensemble plays such a wide range of characters that it’s difficult to identify every single character that every single actor plays (especially since a number of them double up on roles). Beyond the cast members specified below for individual roles, credited cast members include Emily Axford, Shamir Bailey, Kate Berlant, Cole Escola, Jermaine Fowler, Karen Graci, Georgia Hardstark, Karen Kilgariff, Betsy Sodaro, Sheila Vand, Baron Vaughn, and David Wain, with Hanawalt and executive producer Raphael Bob-Waksberg also contributing voices.

She loves her fans! Anna Faris thanked her podcast listeners for their support amid her split from Chris Pratt.

The rest of the episode was a pre-taped crossover with the hosts of “My Favorite Murder” podcast Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark.

Real talk: “Talk Show The Game Show” will penalize a guest for murder, but it adheres to strict guidelines for what that means. “If you murder someone during the course of the game, we don’t have to wait for the entire legal process to play out in the state of California,” host and creator Guy Branum said. “[Head judge] Casey Schreiner can just put you in the penalty box for a period of time, possibly even throw you out of the game.
“Though not necessarily,” Branum added. “It depends on the terms of the murder.”

Taking advantage of the power of online media, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is opening up and sharing. Their new web documentary series “Academy Originals” uses “the expertise of the organization’s more than 6,000 members” to focus on the creative process, seminal moments in film history, and what drives some of these talented people. Of the first batch, screenwriters should pay close heed to "Milk" writer Dustin Lance Black's tutorial on how to write a screenplay. Brilliant. Check it out below. Another that’s bound to receive attention is “Let’s Go to the Movies," featuring always sharp Patton Oswalt. He's trying to figure out one title from the Academy Archive to screen. After he picks one, he chats about his choice--an under-appreciated film noir--with comedian Karen Kilgariff. “Not Much to See” explores various relationships the blind have with cinema, and, in turn, the positive impact Descriptive Video.

Comedian and actor Patton Oswalt is a very funny and very passionate geek. He's also a lover of film, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has started a new web series with him called Let's Go the the Movies with Patton Oswalt. Oswalt has been given the opportunity to watch any film in the Academy Film Archive and then analyzes it. In this first episode he is joined by comedian Karen Kilgariff. They watch the 1961 noir classic Blast of Silence. You can watch the episode below, and I also included the trailer for film they watched below that.

So, this is what happens when you let Patton Oswalt loose in The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences film archives. As part of a new series of "Academy Originals" videos on YouTube, this latest "Let's Go to the Movies" video provides a very lively and fun discussion on the 1961 B&W film noir classic Blast of Silence, set in New York City. It's also just fun to see Patton roam the halls of the archives and chat about his love for movies and the New Beverly. Posted on The Academy's YouTube, found via Facebook. We should really poll comedians for their takes on classic movies more often. If you know what's funny, you probably have an equally acute read on what's cinematically effective. Patton Oswalt and Karen Kilgariff prove this in a new video from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The duo picked a movie, screened it at La's New Beverly Cinema, and then talked about how Marlon Brando kind of poisoned cinema forever. Kind of hard to disagree, Stella.

Lindsay Lohan’s on-again on-again legal troubles are once again igniting the internet. The out actress will be returning to rehab “under lock and key” for 90-days.

Today’s short is the 2001 film The Girls Guitar Club. The short is written by Mary Lynn Rajskub and Karen Kilgariff, both of whom also star in the film, and is directed by Ruben Fleischer. The short also features Nick Swardson in a supporting role. Fleischer broke out in 2009 with his horror comedy Zombieland, and his latest directorial feature, Gangster Squad, was released in theatres this weekend. Nick Swardson also plays a supporting role in the horror movie spoof A Haunted House, which also was released in theatres this weekend.

Ruben Fleischer is on a roll right now, with his third feature in four years hitting theaters (a bit delayed) this Friday. Before Gangster Squad, he directed the dark comedies Zombieland and 30 Minutes or Less, and long before that he made his first film, a short from 2001 titled The Girls Guitar Club. Producing and directing off a script from the comedy duo of Karen Kilgariff and Mary Lynn Rajskub (both of whom were then perhaps best known for Mr. Show), Fleischer thought it would be his calling card for jumping into Hollywood. “I basically spent all the money I had saved and was sure that movie deal offers were gonna come and I’d be directing pilots [for] television shows,” he told Collider back in 2009. “And as soon as people saw the short film, but of course people thought and said, ‘Oh that’s good,’ and [then] nothing ever really came of it.” Perhaps...
