Edward Burns is premiering his new movie at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival!

The 56-year-old star had the support of wife Christy Turlington at the premiere of Millers in Marriage on Wednesday (Sept. 11) held at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto, Canada.

Along with starring in the movie, Edward also directed and wrote it.

Fellow cast members in attendance included Gretchen Mol, Julianna Margulies, Benjamin Bratt, Morena Baccarin, Patrick Wilson, Brian d’Arcy James, and Campbell Scott.

There is something almost remarkable about how “Millers in Marriage,” a relationship drama written and directed by Edward Burns (who also co-stars), manages to gather a group of some otherwise acclaimed actors, sticks them in rooms to talk through what are inevitably emotionally charged situations that their characters are facing, and comes out with something so empty. This void of a movie has plenty of the right pieces to work with at hand, but continually arranges them in the most blunt, least interesting manner possible. It’s a film that bolds, underlines and then shouts at you what it’s about, though never authentically earns your emotional investment.

Save for the more measured performance of Minnie Driver, none of the other actors emerge unscathed as all get dragged down by overwritten dialogue and painfully unsubtle storytelling.

National Association of Theatre Owners/NATO has named Harkins Theatres president and CEO Mike Bowers the new chair of its non-profit The Cinema Foundation.

Bowers takes over from Tim Handren, who recently retired as CEO of Santikos Theatres. Tori A. Baker, the CEO and president of Salt Lake Film Society, will continue as vice chair of The Cinema Foundation.

Bowers brings close to 40 years in exhibition and has grown Harkins Theatres from a local operator with six locations to the fifth highest-grossing exhibitor in the United States and the highest performing company per location.

The time has come for the annual presentation of the Toronto International Film Festival. The festivities will include many premieres of titles, whether it be their big world premiere, their North American premiere, or even just their Canadian premiere. Deadline has unveiled a number of upcoming films that attendees are expected to see this year.

Among those premiering are some star-studded affairs, such as the war drama Without Blood, which stars Salma Hayek and Demián Bichir and is directed by Angelina Jolie. The film is based on the Alessandro Baricco novel. Hard Truths from Mike Leigh stars Marianne Jean-Baptiste. That film is being described as an “Ongoing exploration of the contemporary world with a tragicomic study of human strengths and weaknesses.”

The 49th Toronto International Film Festival has unveiled a star-studded lineup featuring a slew of highly-anticipated features this awards season.

IndieWire can confirm the Galas and Special Presentations programs that boast 63 films, including new titles from beloved directors like Mike Leigh, Morgan Neville, Jacques Audiard, and Edward Berger, whose papal drama “Conclave” will make its international premiere at the festival. (Meaning this American production will world-premiere at Telluride.)

The Galas program, sponsored by Dyson, includes buzzy Cannes titles like Paul Schrader’s “Oh, Canada” and David Cronenberg’s “The Shrouds.” Cronenberg will also be honored with the Norman Jewison Career Achievement Award during the festival.

The Special Presentations section marks the premiere of Gia Coppola’s “The Last Showgirl” starring Pamela Anderson, as well as Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ “Heretic.”

After writing “The Sopranos” episodes, Matthew Weiner thought he was part of the HBO “family.”

However, the “Mad Men” creator revealed that new executive management at the network following visionary Chris Albrecht’s exit led to him being ignored, per the new book “It’s Not TV: The Spectacular Rise, Revolution, and Future of HBO” by Felix Gillette and John Koblin.

According to the oral history of the network, then-hbo President Carolyn Strauss “snubbed” Weiner and HBO did not even respond to the “Mad Men” pitch, despite “The Sopranos” showrunner David Chase urging “everyone at the network to give it a look.”

Weiner recalled, “It was very disappointing to me, as I pushed the rock up the hill, that they did not notice me. Because I was part of the family.”

Eventually, “Mad Men” landed at cable network AMC, whose goal was to “do an HBO kind of series,” as Weiner said.

The half-hour dramedy series has been canceled at Epix after two seasons. It comes after Epix revealed plans to rebrand as MGM+ in the new year.

The series was written, directed and produced by Burns, who also stars. It is set in the early 1980’s, revolves around a group of recent college grads setting out to pursue their dreams in Manhattan while still clinging to the familiarity of their working-class Long Island home town

The second season aired premiered in July.

The series’ ensemble cast includes Sam Vartholomeos, Caitlin Stasey, Gigi Zumbado, JanLuis Castellanos, Brian Muller and Isabella Farrell.

Epix has canceled its Edward Burns-produced dramedy “Bridge and Tunnel” after two seasons, Variety has learned exclusively.

Set in the early 1980s, the half-hour show revolves around a group of recent college grads setting out to pursue their dreams in Manhattan while still clinging to the familiarity of their working-class Long Island home town.

Written, directed and produced by “Saving Private Ryan” and “Public Morals” star Burns, “Bridge and Tunnel” stars the actor alongside Sam Vartholomeos (“Star Trek: Discovery”), Caitlin Stasey (“Reign,” “Please Like Me”), Gigi Zumbado (“9-1-1,” “Criminal Minds,” “Scream”), JanLuis Castellanos (“13 Reasons Why,” “Marvel’s Runways”), Brian Muller (“The Deuce,” “Madame Secretary,” “The Good Wife”) and Isabella Farrell (“The Good Fight”).

The first season of “Bridget and Tunnel” premiered Jan. 24, 2021 on the pay TV network and consisted of six episodes. In July 2021, the show was renewed for a second season. That six-episode edition rolled out between July 10-Aug.

When you think of HBO's classic mid-'00s series "The Wire," it's the characters that come to mind first -- people like McNulty (Dominic West), D'Angelo, Kima (Sonja Sohn), or Stringer Bell (Idris Elba). All of them have their place in the show's vast tapestry, but their stories never feel manufactured or inauthentic. Their major failures and small triumphs echo and clash against those of others, comprising the major drama of the show. And Stringer, the ambitious climber at the top of the show's Barksdale criminal empire, had some of the show's most engaging material. Of course, it helped that he was played by a future movie star.

While you can now see him on the big screen fighting monstrous lions in "Beast" or playing a romantic Djinn in a George Miller film, Idris Elba's work in "The Wire" some 20 years earlier was much more low-key. Stringer is nothing like the typical fantasy gangster.

In Hollywood, everything is not what it seems. The camera is only a reflection of the reality filmmakers put in front of it, therefore, specific experiences portrayed beyond the cast and crew's reach can sometimes be quite flawed. While the addictive thrill of a "Criminal Minds" episode starring enigmatic TV character actors may come off as smart, real law enforcement professionals might have other opinions.

Chanel hosted its 15th annual Tribeca Festival Artists Dinner on Monday night in New York City.

“This festival and Chanel’s support of it couldn’t be more important at this moment in time, particularly for so many artists and so many women filmmakers,” Judith Light told Variety on the red carpet about the event’s in-person New York City return from a two-year pandemic pause.

“Here we are with a level of diversity and inclusivity that is bringing us all back together just like Tribeca did after 9/11,” she continued.

The summer night blossomed inside the elegant soirée at tony Balthazar where the well-heeled of Hollywood and the art world came to celebrate artists who contributed original artworks to the festival’s award-winning filmmakers.

Penélope Cruz shared her own grateful enthusiasm for being at the film festival event on the heels of her U.S. premiere of “Official Competition,” a drama co-starring Antonio Banderas.

Pj Hogan, the director of the 1997 romantic comedy My Best Friend’s Wedding, has reflected on Russell Crowe’s awkward audition for the film.

The movie starred Julia Roberts as a woman who realises she is in love with her best friend when he gets engaged to somebody else. While the best friend in question was ultimately played by Dermot Mulroney, Crowe was one of the actors who auditioned for the role.

In an excerpt from the book From Hollywood With Love, published in Vulture, the filmmaker said his first choice for the part had been Crowe, who he thought was “probably the most amazing actor I had ever encountered”.

To cast Crowe in the film, Hogan explained, he needed Roberts’s approval. He invited Crowe to a table read opposite Roberts and hoped there would be great chemistry between the pair.

“I don’t know what went wrong,” Hogan said.
