As someone who hasn't been shy about sharing my undying love for the 2008 zombie horror comedy Dance of the Dead over the years, (I even had the pleasure of helping host 10th anniversary screenings for the film back in 2018), I'm always stoked to see what director Gregg Bishop is working on, so I'm especially thrilled and chilled that Bishop's new short film, Howl at the Dead, will have its Canadian premiere tonight at the Fantasia International Film Festival!

A haunted house short film told from the unique perspective of family pets, Howl at the Dead will screen tonight at Montreal's De Sève Theatre as part of the “Are You Afraid of Fantasia?” program at 9:30pm.

From Children of the Living Dead to Zombi 2, the infamous copyright blunder that immediately placed Night of the Living Dead in the public domain means that unauthorized sequels to George A. Did you ever wonder what it would be like if the zombie apocalypse coincided with prom night? The dead rising from their graves, calling out for brains. Disrupting the school event that’s supposed to be a great, memorable moment in a teen’s life. That’s what happens in the 2008 film Dance of the Dead (watch it Here). Which would have been a great sequel to The Return of the Living Dead if it were part of that franchise. And if you haven’t seen it, it’s definitely The Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.

Although Dance of the Dead was released in 2008, the first draft of the screenplay was written eleven years earlier.

Zombies have a long history in film, and just like the rest of the horror genre, the evolution of the zombie movie is a topographical study of political and sociological change. From the early appearance of zombies as anti-war symbols in 1919's "J'accuse!" through the Vodou zombies of 1932's "White Zombie," and from the shambling flesh-eaters of George A. Romero's seminal 1968 film "Night of the Living Dead" through the fast-moving rage zombies of Danny Boyle's 2002 epidemiological horror "28 Days Later," zombie movies are a constant but ever-changing staple of cinema.

While those classics of the subgenre make for excellent year-round horror viewing, there are so many underrated and/or underseen zombie movies that deserve your attention. This list highlights 15 of those films: stories about the undead that breathe new life into horror and raise new questions about politics, culture, and art, all while making you scared to walk past a cemetery.

Last year it was announced that David S. Goyer was producing and writing a “loyal, yet evolved reimagining” of Clive Barker's Hellraiser (which is based on his novella The Hellbound Heart), and now it's been revealed that David Bruckner has been summoned to direct the film, with Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski coming aboard to write the screenplay.

The latest Hellraiser news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, who reveal that Goyer is still involved as a producer (as well as Keith Levine) and is writing the story for the film, so it looks like Goyer will still have creative input on the screenplay by Collins and Piotrowski.

The new Hellraiser movie is coming from Spyglass Media, a collaboration between Gary Barber and Lantern Entertainment's Andy Mitchell and Milos Brajovic. As THR notes, Spyglass is also the company behind the upcoming Scream movie.

Exclusive: Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski, the hot writing duo behind $12m Sundance pic The Night House, are joining forces with genre label Fangoria on horror movie The Sisters Of Samhain. The script follows a group of friends who team up with a witch on Halloween night to prevent a rogue coven from bringing about the end of the world.

Fangoria’s owner Cinestate is financing the pic and will handle distribution. The Texas-based studio is teaming with Chicago-based media company Bloody Disgusting on the project, as well as Final Destination producers Practical Pictures and Grade A Entertainment. The WGA East today announced the second crop of fellows for its Made in NY Writers Room, a program that provides mentorship, industry access and financial support to underrepresented writers who live in New York City and seek to tell stories that are not often depicted on television. The program is a joint effort with the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment and the city’s Department of Small Business Services.

I didn’t know anything about Dance of the Dead when I first saw it sitting on the "new releases" shelf at the local Blockbuster in the fall of 2008. But its title intrigued me: zombies and a high school prom in one movie? You didn’t have to twist my arm (or rip it off), I knew right then that I had to watch it (and I hadn't even seen the devil bong yet).

After watching empathetic high school cliques unite to slay zombies at the prom, I would go on to recommend director Gregg Bishop and writer Joe Ballarini’s Dance of the Dead to anyone who would listen. Little did I know that stars were aligning, and years later I would connect with Ballarini and Bishop and get the chance to do what my 17-year-old self never thought was possible: host 10th anniversary screenings of Dance of the Dead.

Siren is based on the segment 'Amaeteur Night' from V/H/S (2012), which was highly praised by horror fans. With Hannah Fierman reprising her role as Lily from the segment, the film was shot in 18 days and edited in 4 weeks.

I am a fan of the first V/H/S, particularly the segment upon which this film is based, Amateur Night. This prequel-sequel unfortunately does not do the series justice. What made the first film great was the romantic element, you just couldn't help but fall in love with Lily. She was the cute, quiet, shy girl who "likes you." Siren rushes every encounter with Lily, and does next to nothing when it comes to expanding any sort of story surrounding her. Not to mention, she seemed to change from a succubus to a siren somewhere in between these two films.

That’s how impactful producers felt this vignette proved, enough to spark interest for an expansion beyond its creative team. David Bruckner — the source material’s director and co-writer with Nicholas Tecosky — stayed on as an executive producer while working second unit, ultimately passing the baton to Bishop in order to focus on his own feature Southbound. In that respect this project could be labeled as a full-fledged remake with screenwriters Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski crafting an entirely new mythology. While the 2012 horror anthology V/H/S may be uneven overall, there can be little doubt that “Amateur Night,” the segment written and directed by David Bruckner, is one of the highlights of the film. The found footage short about a group of dudebros who pick up an odd girl (Hannah Fierman) who turns out to be more than they expected, is funny and scary in the best EC Comics tradition. Because it works so beautifully as a self-contained short, it also doesn’t seem like the most obvious candidate to be adapted into a full feature film. Enter director Gregg Bishop and his new movie, Siren.

Siren is a horror-thriller about Jonah, an apprehensive groom-to-be whose bachelor party turns into a nightmare when he frees a seemingly innocent victimized girl locked up in a supernatural sex club. Her ruthless handler and proprietor of the sex club will stop at nothing to re-capture his prize. Sirens would draw Greek sailors to their doom, with their beautiful voices. Now, at least one inhabits director Gregg Bishop (V/H/S Viral) and David Bruckner's upcoming horror feature Siren. Developed from Bruckner's short film "Amateur Night," Jonah rescues a girl, from a supernatural sex club. But, she proves more than he can handle. The film stars: Chase Williamson (John Dies at the End), Justin Welborn (The Final Destination), Michael Aaron Milligan, Hayes Mercure, and Randy McDowell. An early clip from Siren is hosted here. The clip shows Jonah (Williamson) and the Siren (Hannah Fierman) in a bathroom. Both characters are hounded by a masked, knife wielding man. Jonah cowers as the Siren attacks. And, the results are gruesome. Siren is slated for a December launch. The film will see a few theatres this December 2nd. On December 6th, the film will be launched on VOD and on DVD.

Based on the original V/H/S short by David Bruckner, about a group of revelers who try to take advantage of a girl only to discover themselves at her mercy, Siren takes that idea to feature length.

Siren will be screening at the Wizard World Comic Con in Chicago this weekend on Sunday, Aug. 21 at 8 p.m. at the Muvico Rosemont and then at Frightfest in London on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at Discovery Screen Two.

Genre festival reveals masterclasses and film programme.

Horror Channel FrightFest (Aug 25-29) has unveiled the line-up of events and movies for its 2016 edition, set to be held at the Vue cinema in London’s Shepherds Bush.

Screen will host a panel on the future of the UK horror film industry, followed by the first Screen International Horror Rising Star Award [click here for the shortlist].

There will also be a horror writing master class with writer-director James Moran; a women in horror symposium; a special effects demo from maestro Dan Martin; and a discussion by filmmaker Paul Davis – who made John Landis approved doc Beware The Moon - marking the 35th anniversary of An American Werewolf In London.

The festival is also set to screen H.G. Lewis’ 1963 gore classic Blood Feast, which is getting a 4K restoration from Arrow.

The FrightFest audience will be the first in the UK to see The Neighbor, directed by Marcus Dunstan (The Collection).

As the third film in the series, V/H/S: Viral runs the risk of taking a good thing too far. Featuring stories that feel like they’ve forced camera footage in them to stick to the over-arcing theme, is it time to end the franchise now? The returning horror anthology this time has a connecting story that features a car chase, with a camera obsessed boyfriend chasing an ice cream van which appears to have stolen the love of his life. As we get a few minutes of this story at a time, we then skip off to some other stories that tend to make a little more sense.
