A child and a wolf stare fixedly at each other, eye to eye, in the zoo. Then both their stories unfold in one of those children’s book that was written with both child and adult in mind. It’s short, and while certainly not a masterpiece, it is a pretty satisfying read. Great for both child and adult!

O carte pentru copii dar care poate fi citită și de cei mari. O aventură incitantă, care stârnește curiozitatea și te împiedică să lași cartea din mână. O carte care te invită să pătrunzi în mintea unui lup și să-i înțelegi viața, dorința și tânjirea după libertate, dar și sentimentul neputinței pe care-l are închis fiind în grădina zoologică, unde vede doar vizitatorii.

I don't normally mix work and Goodreads, but I had to mention this book.
Outside of other things people might know me for, I also teach children. The books I read for my job don't end up on my Goodreads account, but this one had to. I was blown away by the imagery and the different voices in this story, but even better - I could see that the kids in my class were having their minds blown as well.
This is a short novel. This is appropriate for children. But this is not an easy read, especially for younger readers. There are a lot of difficult concepts to juggle here, and there is a lot that shouldn't be taken literally.

Empatia
Un bambino venuto dall'Africa e un lupo dell'Alaska. Entrambi soli, entrambi trapiantati a forza, si incontrano in uno zoo. Si fissano negli occhi e capiscono la vita trascorsa uno dell'altro.
Nessun dialogo, se non quello interiore. Ma nello sguardo condividono il dolore vissuto. Non servono parole, a volte, per trasmettere emozioni.
"Vuoi guardarmi? D’accordo, anch’io ti guardo!". Ma qualcosa disturba il lupo: lui non ha che un occhio, mentre il ragazzo ne ha due. Il lupo è a disagio. Allora il ragazzo fa una cosa curiosa: chiude un occhio.
Solo chi sa vedere e ascoltare può smascherarci e renderci vulnerabili. Ma essere vulnerabili significa anche essere compresi.

Unii l-au comparat cu Kipling datorită acestei legături dintre un băiat și un animal sălbatic. Spre rușinea mea, eu nu am citit Cartea junglei, însă atât cât știu despre ea mă face să o consider mai jucăușă decât e aceasta. Eu l-aș compara mai degrabă cu Jack London, poate într-o variantă mai accesibilă și copiilor mai mici, dar la fel de emoționantă. Finalul este magnific și aș fi plâns dacă nu aș fi fost călită de multele drame citite, iar mesajul este unul care ar trebui să ajungă nu doar la copii, ci și la adulți: aproape orice punte spre un suflet poate fi trecută cu răbdare, grijă și blândețe. E una dintre cărțile despre care pot spune că îmi este dragă pentru că te face să privești altfel viața și reușește asta în doar 200 de pagini. Și la bătrânețe o să îmi amintesc de ea și cât de mult mi-a plăcut. Minunată și memorabilă poveste, genul pe care o povestești și nepoților, încărcată de candoare și emoție! Magnifique! j'ai vraiment adoré! L'histoire du loup puis celle de l'enfant, ce que cette pourriture d'homme fait subir à la nature depuis tant d'années.

Bellissimo cane, il lupo. Non ama l'uomo per natura, ma può ricredersi. Un libro breve, densissimo di significati e non tutti così immediati. Al termine della lettura, consiglio un video su YouTube davvero illuminante.

Mi è piaciuto un sacco, davvero un bel libricino.
Se volete leggere qualcosa di si, leggero ma anche che vi faccia emozionare e ragionare questo libro è perfetto.
La cosa che ho apprezzato è che in modo non troppo velato sottolinea e evidenzia che gli animali sono meglio delle persone.

Un racconto commovente sul potere dell'amicizia e sul rapporto uomo-animale. Questo era un libro che vedevo sempre sugli scaffali da piccolo e che mi ha sempre incuriosito, ma per un motivo o per l'altro non avevo mai preso in mano. L'ho ascoltato in un giorno su Storytel, narrato da Claudio Bisio, (1 ora e 15 minuti di ascolto essendo molto breve) è stato il mio primo audiobook, un'esperienza piacevole e che sicuramente farò di nuovo.
Mi ha preso di più la storia di Lupo Azzurro, (ambientata tra le nevi dell'Alaska, in mezzo al suo branco che fugge dal pericolo dell'uomo) che quella del bambino Africa, il cui potere è proprio quello di comunicare con gli animali, anche solo tramite uno sguardo. Attraverso l'unico occhio del lupo il ragazzo riesce a vedere la storia dell'animale, così come il lupo riesce a vedere la storia di Africa. Due storie difficili che parlano di sacrificio, di abbandono e di libertà. Però avrei voluto un maggiore approfondimento di questi temi, e una cosa che non avevo ben capito è stata il finale, che avevo frainteso, ma grazie ad una spiegazione su internet mi è risultato più chiaro.

Тому Блакитний Вовк робить те, що не робив ніколи: сід��є перед гостем і втуплюється поглядом свого єдиного ока просто в нього…і сердиться, бо не розуміє, в яке око хлопчика свій погляд спрямувати. Але потім малий робить дивну річ — і весь цей зоопарк з його клітками, вся ця територія болю і несвободи зникає, як поволі сиплеться стіна між ними. Вовк дізнається історію хлопчика і розповідає йому свою.
Око вовка розповідає про безкраї білі простори, про сім’ю, в якій кожен був готовий захистити іншого, не шкодуючи лап і гострих ікол, про незвичайну вовчичку, схожу на золоту блискавку, і про жорстокість і впертість людей, мисливців і колекціонерів, які переслідували зграю, і про лихо, після якого Блакитний Вовк став однооким. Eye of the Wolf is a short but beautiful story told from two perspectives. Blue Wolf has a sad tale to tell of how he came to be held in captivity in the zoo. The boy - whose name I shall not reveal because it is a part of his story - tells a remarkable tale of survival, hope and friendship. Both stories intertwine beautifully.
The wolf's narrative is incredibly descriptive and expertly communiates the world through an animal's perspective. Blue Wolf's memories of his family are endearing and gentle. He has a very distinctive voice which I found a joy to read. The boy's narrative is a more amusing tale as he finds ingenious ways to ensure his survival. He is a storyteller and there is a folk tale feel to his voice that I really enjoyed.
This novel is very short but in just 110 pages I felt that I understood Alaska from a wolf's viewpoint and that I had travelled the breadth of Africa.
Overall, I highly recommend this book. It is an uplifting tale of friendship and survival. Adams has most skilfully translated Pennac's story so that every word is truly enchanting.

Nu e prima dată când interacționez cu Daniel Pennac: acum vreo 10 ani citeam ”Domnilor copii”, într-una dintre cele mai frumoase colecții de literatură străină - cea de la ziarul Cotidianul (prietenii știu de ce!), apoi am citit ”La căpcăunii veseli”.
Ce am citit mi-a plăcut, pentru că, pe de o parte, este foarte expresiv, pe de alta, scrie pe înțelesul tuturor. ”Ochi de lup”, un micro-roman, este o carte care poate plăcea și copiilor, și părinților. Este o poveste despre un lup și felul în care a evoluat și a ajuns în cele din urmă într-o grădină zoologică, la fel cum este o poveste despre devenirea unui copil și felul în care el înțelege animalele. Simplu, dar nu simplist, având în permanență două perspective, este un roman despre diferențe, despre comuniunea cu animalele și felul în care omul a schimbat ordinea din natura înconjurătoare. Și, dacă extrapolăm, despre felul în care diferențele ne separă și dacă această separare este sau nu definitivă.

I love, love, love this book. And I am probably biased about it, because I read it as a child, but it was so wonderful... This is pretty much the reason why I began to like wolves. It is a touching story of friendship, and it made me happy and sad and I remember feeling like this book was talking to me, that it was explaining things to me. Most importantly, it realises kids are intelligent people.
I read it in French, so I can't comment on the translation.
If you have a kid who likes to read even a little bit, or who likes stories about animals, this was one of my favourite, and it stuck with me. Oh, and I believe it's one of these children books that are just as enjoyable as a grown-up. So whatever your age, I highly recommend this.

Relire un livre de mon enfance avec mes yeux d’adulte. M’imprégner des mots, de l’histoire et de la voix de ce loup et de cet enfant qui se regardent à travers une cage dans un zoo. Fermer les yeux et voir les paysages enneigée du Grand Nord, et le désert de sable de l’Afrique. Il est question de la nature, d’environnement, de courage et de liberté. Je l’ai savouré et refermé avec l’impression d’avoir gagner en sagesse. Ce livre a été écrit il y a des années et l’action humaine n’a pas changé, qu’attendons nous ?

I don't usually review books in this age range, but I still like how those writers describe very profound issues with the simplest words. I am sure you've already had a conversation with a child about important issues and have been wondering how that freckled kid could understand some things way better than you do and don't understand why you have to be so complicated about everything ?
Sometimes, you just learn listening to those kids and their vision of the world (and other times, after watching a Dora episode for the 50th time, you might not). Eye of the Wolf was published in 1984 in France but was only translated and published in English in 2003.
This story has reminded me a lot of The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. In the shortest book, you discover worlds you never thought existed and get to see animals in a different light. It is the type of book where children read one thing and adults read the same thing on another level and they can exchange ideas on the book. As a philosophical tale, the book can be read by anyone, from 8 to 88 years old (I mean, people above 88 can read it too, it's just an expression), and still be appreciated.
I like how the wolf and the boy both suffer from the cruelty of men. I find it to be an interesting twist that a harsh life would be thrust upon a strong animal and a harmless baby in more or less the same way.
I also like how the issue of industrialisation and its consequences on nature are hinted from the perspective of the animals. And each animal portrayed in the book is very well developed and interesting, from the fun personalities of the Alaskan wolves to the rich personalities of the African animals.
I find that there is a message of hope given in the book where friendship is possible between two different species who can hunt/eat each other. This friendship is reached through knowledge and communication. The wolf and the boy come from different worlds, but they can lean on each other. Yes, I love this song (Lean on me) and secretly want you to love it too. I find it very sweet that the boy chooses to close one eye to be on equal grounds with the wolf.
The French edition I read had very cute illustrations every few pages, the British and American editions don't have exactly the same (the illustrator differs), but hopefully, they are just as beautiful !
It is a very easy read and it is such a beautiful and touching story that anyone can read the book and fall in love for all its amazing characters. It is also the type of book that both a child and a parent can read and where they can talk about it together (which would be quite the whole point of the book, you know, friendship, family, love, all that).
Sometimes, you just learn listening to those kids and their vision of the world (and other times, after watching a Dora episode for the 50th time, you might not). Eye of the Wolf was published in 1984 in France but was only translated and published in English in 2003.
This story has reminded me a lot of The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. In the shortest book, you discover worlds you never thought existed and get to see animals in a different light. It is the type of book where children read one thing and adults read the same thing on another level and they can exchange ideas on the book. Africa è un bambino che ha vissuto una vita ricca di avventure, che ha attraversato il suo continente da cima a fondo, che lo ha riscoperto passo dopo passo facendosi molti amici, che teme di non rivedere mai più e che di certo non si aspetta di incontrare nel giardino zoologico di Parigi.
Lupo azzurro, invece, è un lupo disperato, per il quale non vale la pena di aprire uno dei due occhi, in quanto tutto ciò che ha da guardare lì, al giardino zoologico, sono gli umani, gli stessi che lo hanno imprigionato. Ma quando conosce Africa, che rispetto a lui viene dall'altra parte del mondo, le cose cambiano.
Pennac è sicuramente uno, se non il, mio autore preferito quindi questa recensione non ha alcuna pretesa di obiettività. Si tratta di una favola moderna, di una grande metafora di quello che è il mondo, di quello che gli stiamo facendo e gli abbiamo fatto.
È impossible, per come sono scritti, non empatizzare con i due protagonisti, non provare forse un'iniziale pena per loro, ma che poi passa in fretta, perché non ê questo il sentimento che Pennac vuole trasmetterci. Quale sia questo sentimento lascio a voi il compito di scoprirlo.

Penso sia uno di quei libri (un po' come il piccolo principe) che viene erroneamente etichettato come "libro per bambini" quando in realtà è molto piú di questo. La prima volta me lo lesse mia madre quando avevo solo 6 anni, prendendolo in prestito in biblioteca, ma quella volta non mi toccó piú di tanto. Lo scorso Natale (circa 14 anni dopo) l'ho comprato per ragalarlo a mia madre e nel frattempo l'ho riletto ed è stato come se lo leggessi per la prima volta! È di una semplicità e dolcezza che colpiscono ma che forse un bambino non puó cogliere a pieno.
Quindi consiglio ai "grandi" di avventurarsi nella sezione "bambini" e cercare questo libro che scalda il cuore.

This is my second favourite book after Skellig. I think Africa and his friends all died and the zoo was some kind of heaven, Africa died in the car accident, Blue Wolf died because he wouldn’t eat his meat, Black Scorpion died because of the dryness, Perdrix just died, Saucepansdied because he wouldn’t move, Black Scorpion killed Pa mia and Ma mia, and I’m not sure on the rest. Such a good book! A MUST READ!

Sto leggendo in italiano, tradotto di Donatella Ziliotti (Salani, 1993). Mia Milanese nipote ha preso in vacanze qua (USA), ma l'ho rubato per tre giorni. Bella istoria della famiglia lupina (?) e familglia adottiva di bambino chiamato "Africa," beduino. Il finale è più simile a un libro per bambini, che naturalmente è.

Ця книга стала для мене маленькою знахідкою. Абсолютно чарівна, моментами сумна, навіть жорстка історія, яка вкотре нагадує нам, що всі ми — діти Природи, і всі перед нею рівні. Так, це казка з відповідними сюжетними ходами та вибриками (втім, вкрай милими моєму серцю).
Зустріч в зоопарку одноокого Блакитн��го Вовка та хлопчика Африки стала поворотним моментом в житті обох. Вовк розказує (точніше, показує) свою історію, хлопчик — свою.
Ця невелика розповідь про не зовсім дитячі проблеми — вона про війну, про людську жадобу та жорстокість. Але також це книга про свободу, про дружбу, любов і взаємопідтримку. А ще вона про те, що не зважаючи на всі проблеми та печалі, не вартує заплющувати очі й свідомо відмовлятися від доброї половини свого життя.

Très jolie lecture, j'ai beaucoup aimé. Ça m'a fait voyager et comme je suis sensible aux histoires avec des animaux ça m'a d'autant plus plu. C'est assez touchant !
Après une analyse plus approfondie en cours, je suis d'autant plus charmée par ce roman qui est bien plus littéraire que ce qu'on pourrait imaginer au premier abord. Il faut savoir suffisamment lire à travers les lignes pour comprendre les messages d'empathie et de résilience.
Cette histoire nous montre comme il est important de savoir passer au delà des apparences pour comprendre le passé des autres et prendre conscience que nous ne sommes pas les seuls à vivre des moments difficiles. Toute blessure, toute souffrance peut s'estomper avec le temps, et en parler avec d'autres personnes est aussi une manière de contribuer à cette guérison.

Creare un legame è questione di sguardi. E spesso, per essere guardati e riconosciuti come simili, occorre scendere ad un gradino più basso, abbracciando le difficolta' dell'interlocutore. Così, nel silenzio di uno sguardo, nasce la fiducia e si sviluppa un'amicizia. Il breve racconto è pura poesia. Non servono fiumi di parole per farci innamorare del lupo e del ragazzo. Pennac offre quelle giuste, in numero e sostanza.

Un racconto delicatissimo: occhi negli occhi, senza bisogno di parole, due esistenze agli antipodi, eppure accomunate dalla stessa solitudine si trovano a condividere la propria storia.
Non sono solitamente una grande amante di Pennac, ma in questo caso ho apprezzato davvero molto la lettura (e l'ha apprezzata anche la quinta elementare con cui l'ho affrontata).
