The Brazilian author PAULO COELHO was born in 1947 in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Before dedicating his life completely to literature, he worked as theatre director and actor, lyricist and journalist. In 1986, PAULO COELHO did the pilgrimage to Saint James of Compostella, an experience later to be documented in his book The Pilgrimage. In the following year, COELHO published The Alchemist. Slow initial sales convinced his first publisher to drop the novel, but it went on to become one of the best selling Brazilian books of all time. Other titles include Brida (1990), The Valkyries (1992), By the river Piedra I sat Down and Wept (1994), the collection of his best columns published in the Brazilian newspaper Folha de São Paulo entitle Maktub ...more

THE LAY OF THE SINGER'S FALL
by: Eugene O'Neill (1888-1953)

SINGER was born in a land of gold,
In the time of the long ago
And the good fairies gathered from heath and wold
With gracious gifts to bestow.
They gave him the grace of Mirth and Song,
They crowned him with Health and Joy
And love for the Right and hate for the Wrong
They instilled in the soul of the boy;
But when they were gone, through the open door
The Devil of Doubt crept in,
And he breathed his poison in every pore
Of the sleeping infant's skin,
And in impish glee, said "Remember me
For I shall abide for aye with thee
From the very first moment thine eyes shall see
And know the meaning of sin."

The singer became a man and he fought
With the might of his pen and hand
To show for evil the cure long sought,
And spread Truth over the land;
Till the Devil mockingly said, "In sooth
'Tis a sorry ideal you ride,
For the truth of truths is there is no truth!"
--And the faith of the singer died--

And the singer was sad and he turned to Love
And the arms of his lady fair,
He sang of her eyes as the stars above
He sang of -- and kissed -- her hair;
Till the Devil whispered, "I fondly trust
This is folly and naught beside,
For the greatest of loves is merely lust!"
--And the heart of the singer died--

So the singer turned from the world's mad strife
And he walked in the paths untrod,
And thrilled to the dream of a future life
As he prayed to the most high God;
Till the Devil murmured with sneering breath,
"What think you the blind skies hide?
There is nothing sure after death but death!"
--And the soul of the singer died--

And the lips of the singer were flecked with red
And torn with a bitter cry,
"When Truth and Love and God are dead
It is time, full time, to die!"
And the Devil in triumph chuckled low,
"There is always suicide,
It's the only logical thing I know."
--And the life of the singer died.

message 39: by Jordi

Jordi Because I am a very serious fan of your work and because it really is not only literature but inspiraation to so many people around the globe, i gotta say that I feel very skeptical about Veronika Decides to Die the movie. I saw the trailer and I felt thast too much of the story is being changed to fit into a movie plot and be "relevant" to the big screen. What are your thoughts on this?

message 32: by Storm

Storm Thank you fro accepting my "friendship request" on Goodreads. I respect you highly, as you are one of those who try to show a way to people in finding their own ways, and this is the way how to educate people - and if we can help people became better and happier, the whole world becomes better and happier.

I myself have my own duty, my story in wich I try to take my part in making this world a better place. On such a way, the first true strength is Love, the second is Respect, and the third is Honesty. In this spirit, I am just started my journey. And I think, you may hear about me sometimes. ;)

I wish you the bests and am happy that you are here - not just here on this site, but here close to the people, so anybody can get close to you. many great people's biggest mistake is that they keep a distance from people - so their voice and message can became lost in the distance.

But anyway, I started my jounrey, and Universe is already organized all its forces to aid me. Limitations are nothing else but rules the wanderer declares himself.

"Sic Itur Ad Astra."

Maritess Hi Paulo,
Thanks for the add! In response to your video,

I think the most wide ranging problem we have in the world is racism and sexism which is the flag that is raised when people seek any level of power. Look at the Iraq war, ethnic cleansing in Africa, lack of funding for poor areas, etc.

Culture can help by making an effort for broader representation of other races, more representation of women and just in general other viewpoints to encourage understanding.

The difference between now and 10 years ago is that we are now globalized, thanks to technology. You mentioned the internet, and that is certainly true, but through technology and free trade, it's also books and movies, magazines, media.

Traditionally, the pedestal was raised for the anglo-aesthetic and now that we are globalized, it seems that everyone outside of that aesthetic is demonized. Sure, we now have a black president, but that's not to stop people from wandering into a "black" neighborhood.

so I use culture as our lowest common denominator to communicate with people who disagree with me. I say things like, "oh, a black neighborhood, you mean like Bill Cosby's neighborhood?"

and that is why culture is so important, it's what everyone can easily relate to, moreso than politics which takes the lead in values from the media.

As the most basic example I can think of, and this is low-brow culture, I know that actors try to anglicize the names because it would sell less records, movie tickets, etc. I remember being impressed that Jennifer Lopez didn't have to change her last name to get big Hollywood backup. That was the first time I saw that since Desi Arnaz. That gave me hope that American society was progressing, and then suddenlly Cameron Diaz was acceptable, then Cristina Aguilera, great ethnic names to encourage acceptance of diversity in our schools and workplaces.

There is still so much typecasting in American media and that trickles down to how government officials treat the public they serve, and how Americans regard and treat each other, and I can't stand especially to see that in children.

I have a lot more to say and a lot more to clarify but now I have to get back to work and stop fooling around on the internet. I look forward to reading The Alchemist next on my book list. I hope the above made sense, thank you for asking your fans for their opinion. That's great. Cheers!

MARTINE Dear Paulo,
What is your favorite children's story and does it perhaps now connect to where your personal legend has led you as an adult? I'm doing a little curious research that the narratives we love as children say a lot about how we will become in our hearts as adults or how we choose to serve...

I think I'm on my path but I worry...Seeing your heart gives me hope. Thanks for being my book friend, I hold those close to my heart. Books are sacred food to me. Much Love,
Martine
