You, Malcolm thought, his heart so full its overflow felt as painful as weeping, are more beautiful than I deserve.
❝You’re trembling,❞ he whispered. ❝And I’ve only kissed you.❞
❝Remember when I said I wouldn’t let you fall?❞
Seong-Jae nodded tentatively. ❝I remember.❞
❝I’m holding on to you for dear life, Seong-Jae… but I need you to hold on, too.❞
"This is just the start of the storm... and it's going to get worse before it gets better."
Truer words were never spoken... This starts to feel more and more like some kind of chess game with Sila moving the playing pieces into position before making his next gambit. And move he did... I wonder if there are more pieces at play than I already assumed. *side-eyes Sade*
Speaking of Sade... I still don't know if I want to hug or murder them. Probably a combo of both, actually, and yet I feel like the love story between them and Huang could be as epic as the one between Mal and Seong-Jae. Although, I have no friggin' clue how this could possibly pan out...
The case Mal and Seong-Jae are assigned to this time starts innocent enough, although it soon turns into investigations of police brutality, abuse of power and questions of loyalty and even if they can solve it due to their once again impressive mental ping-pong, I have a feeling that it might come back to bite them in their gorgeous butts.
I'll spare you my gushing about Mal and Seong-Jae this time. Yep. Really. Completely. Totally. Argh, okay, okay, sorry I have to. Ngh... just a tiny bit. I gobbled every shared moment between them up like a black hole because...
Sometimes it felt as though they said more with their bodies than with their words; talking was for shared secrets, for navigating the common boundaries of the space they made together...
But touch was for the emotions that had no words.
... it's the small scenes in particular that make their relationship so special. The smoothing down of a tie. The resting of temples together. The linking of their hands. A kiss.
And we all know this cannot possibly last, right? Not with that ending, gahhh...
”He lay awake for many long hours, surrounded by the sound of Malcolm’s heartbeat. And wondering if that heart would still beat for him, if Malcolm knew what Seong-Jae truly was.”
❝I’m worried about you, Seong-Jae. Sometimes…sometimes you seem so far away.❞
❝I do not mean to, Malcolm.❞
❝Why are you so hot when you’re so bossy?❞
❝Not even I have enough psychological training to unpack that statement.❞

Seong-Jae pressed his lips together. “Remind me again why I like you?”
“Because I’m insufferable, and you’re a masochist.”
“I…” He scowled. “I do not have an argument for that.”
He lay awake for many long hours, surrounded by the sound of Malcolm’s heartbeat.
And wondering if that heart would still beat for him, if Malcolm knew what Seong-Jae truly was.
... he can swear he smells Nigella. Flowers.
The flowers in his mother's garden, blue and green and delicate and strange.
"All it takes to be a traitor is to tell the truth."
"This is just the start of the storm ... and it's going to get worse before it gets better."
"How much do you want me to hurt you?"
"As much as you need to."
"Us versus them ..."
“Some of us understand fucking loyalty around here.”
Seong-Jae finally broke his silence—a silence that had been worrying Malcolm, when Seong-Jae was a stock-still scarecrow all in black, remote and withdrawn. But now he turned that penetrating, contemptuous gaze on Andrews, biting off quietly, “And some of us understand we were never meant to be more loyal to each other than to the people we protect.”
“Malcolm filled him. Malcolm consumed him. Malcolm made him more than he could ever be alone, and he only wished he knew how to show him with something other than the surrender of a twisting, breaking body that struggled to give its all.”
