Well all - Anyone feel like cozying up before the fire with a good mystery-thriller for January (or on the beach for those of you in the southern hemisphere!)? Put your list here. It's early, but with the holidays coming up I know I need the time. There are 6000 choices on this list, so go find something good!!

Here is the shelf link: http://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/m...

Sara (hoot31) | 196 comments So excited, didn't realize many of my TBRs were on this list.
I am going to read:
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Lost in a Good Book
Real Murders
Dead as a Doornail
Perfume The Story of a Murderer

Great pick Lyn!

message 3: by Pollyanna (last edited Jan 20, 2010 12:23AM) (new)

Pollyanna (polly8) | 94 comments This is great because a few of my next TBR's fit into this genre. Got quite a few I'll see how many I can do:

The Summons changed as I own this one.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time
Dead to the World
Death du Jour
Deadly Décisions
The Thirteenth Tale

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
Thanks Sara - I have been in a "cozy up with a mystery" mood myself. I read Lost in a Good Book. It was great!! I hope you enjoy.

I just finished The Eyre Affair last night, so definitely looking forward to it. I was going to read it this weekend, but now I am going to hold off until Jan and finish my stack of library books first. I have been in a reading frenzy lately ;-)

message 7: by Candiss (last edited Jan 23, 2010 03:50PM) (new)

Candiss (tantara) I am fairly certain I won't get through all these:

The Turn of the Screw by Henry James
Perfume The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
Shades of Grey: The Road to High Saffron by Jasper Fforde

IF I finish those (which is highly unlikely): The Eight by Katherine Neville (a re-read from years ago and one of my faves)

message 8: by Melissa (last edited Jan 18, 2010 08:56AM) (new)

Melissa (melitious) Let's see . . . I'm going to try to go with books I already have at home, or that I know my dad or sister have:

The 6th Target
When the Wind Blows
The Lost Symbol
The Camel Club

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
Candiss - I loved The Eight and am hoping to read the sequel, The Fire A Novel in 2010 sometime.

Melissa - Great choices!!

message 10: by BJ Rose (last edited Jan 14, 2010 04:58PM) (new)

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 234 comments I'm going (mostly) with books I have at home, and a couple that will fit into the Winter Challenge. If I finish these, I have several more I may add later.

Prey by Michael Crichton
Mary, Mary (Alex Cross, Book 11) by James Patterson
Déjà Dead by Kathy Reichs Jan 5
The Camel Club by David Baldacci

And, if I have time, I want to start Jeffery Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme series

Melissa, we'll have to discuss The Camel Club!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
I thought the Camel Club was good. It will be interesting to see what you guys think of it.

message 12: by Cam (last edited Dec 20, 2009 08:45PM) (new)

Cam I've got some serious catching up to do with many of the series that I read, they are perfect for this Lyn.

Scarpetta By Patricia Cornwell
Genesis By Karin Slaughter
206 Bones By Kathy Reichs
Kindred in Death By J.D. Robb
The Charlemagne Pursuit By Steve Berry
Sweetheart By Chelsea Cain
8th Confession By James Patterson
Map of Bones By James Rollins
The Secret Speech By Tom Rob Smith

(and that's not inluding the stand alones & the start of new series books I have on the shelf)

message 13: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) Well, I guess I'll read The Camel Club first so we can discuss it, Lyn and BJ Rose!

message 14: by Arlene (new)

Arlene | 145 comments I'm going to start the month with Honeymoon. Then I'm going to see what else in on that bedroom shelf!

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 234 comments Melissa wrote: "Well, I guess I'll read The Camel Club first so we can discuss it, Lyn and BJ Rose!"

OK, moving The Camel Club to the beginning of the month!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
Cool Melissa and BJ Rose - I look forward to what you think of it.

Cam - Some good books there. I am doing a pick-a-series challenge for 2010, and I have the Kathy Reichs series as one of the two I am going to try to read. I also have to catch up on the Women's Murder Club books. I am only on The 5th Horseman. And I love Steve Berry's books!

message 17: by Jen B (new)

Jen B (jennybee618) This is a great shelf choice - I love mysteries!

I'm on a lengthy library waiting list for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo...far enough back that I might not even get the book in January. I've also had Mystic River and The Likeness A Novel both on my list for awhile now. And I'm very slowly working my way through Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. Don't know if I'll get to all those in January, but now I can make an extra effort!

message 18: by Tara (last edited Jan 25, 2010 09:02PM) (new)

Tara | 742 comments I have a few I will try to get to...
Lost in a Good Book
Psych A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Read
The Surrogate: A Novel
The Weight of Silence
And Then There Were None

I am not sure how many I will get to since I have not had a lot of time for reading, but I will try to at least get to one or two of these.

message 19: by Rora (new)

Rora Hmm, I don't read too many books in the mystery/thriller genre, but I've always wanted to read The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco.

message 20: by Heather (new)

Heather Adkins (heathermarieadkins) | 9 comments Hi! I'm new to the group, this will be my first shelf :) Quite a few of my TBRs are on this list, here's what I'm gonna read:

Heartsick by Gretchen Lowell
Sweetheart by Gretchen Lowell
Evil at Heart by Gretchen Lowell
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Satterfield
Labyrinth by Kate Mosse
Finger Lickin Fifteen by Janet Evanovich
Every Dead Thing by John Connolly (Charlie Parker #1)

message 21: by Mita (new)

Mita (mitab) | 104 comments I'm gonna read The Alienist by Caleb Carr. Looks interesting!

message 22: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 286 comments It surprised me how many of my TBRs are on this list.
I have The Shadow of the Wind sitting on my shelf waiting to be read, otherwise I'm not sure. My brother likes thrillers so I'll see what I can steal off him and I'd like to read something by Agatha Christie.
Trying to avoid making too many promises because I never keep them :)

message 23: by Mary E. (last edited Dec 19, 2009 05:28PM) (new)

Mary E. (jujjy) I was surprised at my number of TBRs that came up as well, Sarah. And I totally get the whole "avoiding promises" thing. I know these challenges aren't a competition (at least, not with anyone but ourselves), but I'm in so many groups and I always overextend myself and then feel guilty when I can't finish.

So one of my New Year's resolutions is going to be to actually finish every reading challenge I join. The shelf for January is right up my alley so this one should be easy, but I'm only going to commit to three books to leave myself some breathing room for other genres.

Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay
Heartsick by Chelsea Cain
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson

Good luck everyone! :)

Peace

message 24: by Leonie (new)

Leonie (leo23) I will be reading Nefertiti which has been lent to me by a friend at work and fits in with this shelf, there are plenty of others on my TBR pile at home that would fit as well so will see what I can get through on the holidays!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
Sarah - I know, I always have a list of 5 or 6 books, of which I read maybe 1, then another 1 or 2 that aren't even on the list.

message 26: by Lynne (last edited Jan 23, 2010 11:17AM) (new)

Lynne (lmsindel) I went to the library yesterday and checked out my reads for January. I got WAAAAAY too many, but maybe it will rain a lot! LOL Anyway, here is what I got, who knows how many I will read, or even which one to start with:

The Maltese Falcon
The Hound of the Baskervilles
The Woods
The Lovely Bones
Dead to the World
The Spy Who Came In from the Cold
The Nine Tailors
Grave Peril

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
Good choices. I've heard great things about Harlan Coben, but I've never read him yet.

message 28: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (ossycolly) I enjoyed "The Woods" by Harlan Coben.

These books are already at home on the bookshelf. Not sure how many I'll get to or in what order:

Darkly Dreaming Dexter
Perfume The Story of a Murderer
The Bourne Identity
The Girl Who Played with Fire
The Secret History
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time
The Constant Gardener
Child 44

message 29: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 1011 comments I was so excited about this shelf, that I immediately chose three books and checked them out from the library last week. They are currently taunting me at the bottom of my library book pile: "Ha ha, you have to wait until January to read us!" :)

I'm going to be reading a few more of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency:
Morality for Beautiful Girls
The Kalahari Typing School for Men
and one by Jeffrey Archer:
Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less

Luann, did you see the "Ladies Detective Agency" miniseries on HBO? It is available now on DVD. It was really good, in fact, it is one of the few where I liked the show better than the books.

i have been reading quite a bit from this shelf lately: the Milennium Trilogy, In the woods and The Likeness by Tana French, but I'm glad to see someone has Child 44 on their list - I was loaned it and my sister and I read it - very bleak but so well done! Quite tense!! Enjoy!!

I did, and I loved it! Such great casting! Everyone looked and acted exactly like I thought they should from the books - even though I've only read the first two so far. :) I look forward to reading more.

thanks Cathy, it's always good when you get some feedback on a planned read.

Cidney | 3 comments Hello everyone,

I am new to the group, but I am glad to have found it because I personally try to switch up my genres from read to read just to keep it interesting and expand my horizons.

This sounds like a great group and I will be starting with you guys for January.

I was able to find quite a few books on my "TBR" pile that would fall into the category. Since I belong to other clubs and this is my first go around I am just going to start with two.

1st to Die

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Welcome Cidney. I have read 1st to Die and it was really good. I have The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on my TBR.

message 37: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (ossycolly) Welcome Cidney. I really enjoyed The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and am reading The Girl Who Played with Fire at the moment.

Thanks for the welcomes :)

Lyn you mentioned a "pick a series challenge". That sounds great. Is that a challenge here on goodreads or something you are doing personally?

I am actually doing something similar with one of my picks for the month. "1st to die". Never read a whole series straight through and thought it would be fun.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
Cidney - One of the groups that I am in in real life is doing a challenge called "Series Catch Up" where you are supposed to pick one new series and two series that you are behind in, and finish them all three before the year is out.

Cidney, there is a serial readers' challenge here on Goodreads - here's the link if you want to check it out:

I checked out the challenge and it looks totally fun, but too daunting for this working mom. I think my sis would like it though. Oh, I just noticed that she is the original "suggester". I guess she DID find it interesting. LOL

Karen (karenofthebookworm) can i cheat and pick ones that are already on my list for the mini game to shrink my tbr pile if so these are my picks

The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle finished
The Girl Who Played with Fire The Bone Collector

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who is finding lots of my tbr pile on this shelf, when in doubt go with a murder

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
Karen - That's not cheating. I am doing the same thing myself.

message 45: by Karen (new)

Karen (karenofthebookworm) If we could make this shelf last for two years instead of a month I might actually make a pretty decent dent in my tbr pile

message 46: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 1011 comments It's not cheating, Karen. Reading a book that counts for more than one challenge/game/group read is encouraged!

Wow Amy - If you read all of those, I will be really impressed. There are some great books on the list!!

message 49: by Lynne (new)

Lynne (lmsindel) I just started Grave Peril, the 3rd book in Jim Butcher's "Dresden" series. My sister keeps telling me that the books in the series get better and better, and if this one is any indication, that is certainly true. I can't put it down, even though I had to go back to work this week.
