New year, new thread, new books.

What are you reading????

message 2: by Patty (new)

Patty | 3627 comments Well, I’m reading Holly Roth’s second Inspector Medford book: Too Many Doctors. It was written in 1962 (I love “vintage” books). This is the third book of hers that I’ve read. Wonderful mysteries.

I've finished The Village of Eight Graves by Seishi Yokomizo. Then I scoured the internet for the film with no luck.

Next up: The Disappearance of Lydia Harvey: A True Story of Sex, Crime and the Meaning of Justice by Julia Laite, which some mysterious benefactor sent me just after Christmas.

A dysfunctional family is torn apart by a hoarder mother and other issues.

Interesting look at family dynamics. 3 stars

It didn’t work for me. But fans of Jack Reacher might enjoy it. My review:

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 421 comments A Curious Beginning is a lightning-fast romp through a costume-party version of Victorian England with a spectacularly quirky heroine. Forget about learning anything (except the occasional factoid about butterflies) and let it happen; you'll have a great, silly time. I'll certainly come back for another visit after I've had enough of historical mysteries that take themselves too seriously. Four belts of aguardiente.

Christine | 25 comments The Lincoln Highway The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Based on the book synopsis and online buzz, the novel turned out to be very different story than I imagined. However, I still went along for the ride and enjoyed it. With a whole host of characters entering and exiting the story, it was a lot like Towles’s other novel A Gentleman in Moscow with hotel guest coming and going. While I like some character’s stories better than others, overall I found Emmet and Billy’s wild ride very entertaining and the author’s writing refreshing especially his weaving of classical literary quotations out of the mouths of characters very unlikely to have read the texts.

Just finished Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz. My review here. Really, an exemplary bit of plotting and an interesting consideration of how a writers' life may be reflected in his fiction.

Continuing on with The Disappearance of Lydia Harvey: A True Story of Sex, Crime and the Meaning of Justice by Julia Laite. It sounds like true crime, which it is, sort of, but it's really more of a social history. Last night I finished a section on the "white slave" trade, which, as the phrase suggests, "rendered almost invisible" Asian, black, and indigenous women who were also victims of sex trafficking at the time. Fascinating stuff.

Cozy sort of, yes, and I don't normally read this sort of thing but it came at time when I needed a breath of fresh air readingwise to lift my spirits -- just what the doctor ordered. I also have the next book (packed away until painting, sadly) to look forward to.

Jack Reacher #25, OK to read as a stand-alone. Bit of a disappointment--plot, style, all not quite up to usual standard. Rated a generous 3 stars.

Agreed, the Reacher series has lost something since the change in authorship.

Tonight I'll finish Act Of Darkness by Francis King -- about halfway through it reminded me of (sans Mr. Whicher) the real-life Road Hill (aka Rode) House Mystery of 1860. So good -- I hated to put it down but life and all that.

Is anyone else currently not receiving group notifications? Once again the people at Goodreads have found a way to make me crazy.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 440 comments I finished The Book of Souls and started The Shadow Sister and decided to start reading two books at once again, with Purgatory being my bathroom book, as I found the first one was better read in bits rather than all in one go.

Araych | 603 comments Foxglove Summer Foxglove Summer (Rivers of London, #5) by Ben Aaronovitch by Ben Aaronovitch

Rivers of London #5 -- series doesn't have to be read in order but do read #1 first. In this one PC Peter Grant is tasked to help the search for 2 missing girls in a small town quite a bit distant from London. As you might guess it doesn't go smoothly. This is another wonderful entry in the series; to my mind Aaronovitch can do no wrong. The series is highly recommended.
