But as a pragmatist, I say we should care much less about what’s true, and much more about what works. If believing in the Sun God or Shiva or the Abrahamic prophets can get people to stop destroying the only planet we have, I say we go for it....
Indeed, climate change is precisely the kind of challenge that religions may have come into being to solve: How do you get large numbers of people—most of whom are strangers to each other, and all of whom have strong incentives to look out for their self-interest—to work together in the service of the common good? Some religious people might be uncomfortable with using religion for practical goals. But I suspect many more would welcome the view that sees religious faith as uplifting and useful, rather than dogmatic and ignorant.
