Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5.
Type: 📖 physical book.
Genre: adult paranormal fiction.
Challenge: Beat the Backlist 2024 Challenge 📚, I was framed! prompt (26/52) 🕵️♀️.
Overall impression: Lake Silence took me a lot longer to get into and read than the original series The Others because I didn't quite feel the same connection to the cast of characters. However, once I crossed the 1/2 way mark the story progressed quickly and I was engrossed. The mystery and crime solving aspect was pretty obvious but told in an engaging way that kept me hooked. I absolutely love the world Anne Bishop has created and I hope she keeps writing books about The Others!
Best bits:
✅ Human among 'others'
✅ Murder mystery
✅ Human vs human
✅ The Others protect good humans
✅ Diverse characters + species
✅ Characters had flaws + worked on them
✅ Top tier world building
✅ Multiple POV
✅ Intricate sub-plots w/ competing interests
✅ Happy for now (HFN)
✅ Stunning book cover
✅ Part of a series
Worst bits:
❌ Heroine was too self-deprecating
❌ Characters weren't as relatable or loveable as The Others series
❌ The OG Others characters weren't featured
