it was amazing
bookshelves: trollope

I've read 99 percent of the trollopes, even the obscure ones, and this one is my absolute favorite. It has all the best fantasy romance elements (a wisecracking unmarried heiress who finds true love, a lovely young couple who are kept apart by poverty — until she turns out to secretly be the daughter of a very wealthy person) and more. It's got all the best of Trollope and allows you to indulge your fantasy that maybe someday everything will work out in your own life...
I'm curious to know if anyone wants to take part in a trollope reading group? There are so many books, it'd be helpful to have other readers steer you toward the good ones... I'm sort of surprised by how little people have to say in their goodreads.comments about the trollope books they've read, what's that all about?

Jim With about 50 Trollope novels in my library inherited from my mother-in-law, I would be very interested in reading through them with someone. So far I have just managed Barchester Towers, Can You Forgive Her, and The Warden. I have been working casually on The Eustace Diamonds.

You might consider posting something in the Constant Reader group, which gets good readership and long threads. And I would be glad to support a proposal for a Trollope book next time they have nominations on the Classic Corner reading list there.

What I like about Trollope is the caustic way he looks at the upper classes of long ago. On the one hand, I get the fantasy of being with the lords and ladies, and on the other hand I feel that they are no better than we tradesmen. In the end, he always seems to take a fairly conservative stand in spite of the whiggery of the Palisers, so we do have our differences.

Cynthia wow, you have something fun to look forward to! I envy you, enjoy that collection. Are they paperback or hardcover?
A lot of people seem to gravitate toward Eustace Diamonds early on, I'm not sure why, because ultimately it's not one of his more enjoyable books; then people read it, give up halfway through, and decide that Trollope isn't that fun. The Warden wasn't one of my favorites either. So... if you've survived those two AND Alice Vavasour, keep going, it's all uphill from here!
Thanks for the tips on Constant Reader and Classic Corner, I'll check them out. I started a Trollope/Angela Thirkell group but I'm not sure what to do to make them interesting; any suggestions, let me know.
Have fun, can't wait to hear which one you're going to tackle next!
