💀 DNF at 74%.

Thou art not dreaming dear friends, it happened again. I'm the freak who didn't like the book with a stellar average rating.

First of all, let me say that my rating for this book has nothing to do with the book itself and everything to do with what I expected it to be. I had made some silly assumptions before reading this (don't ask me where they came from, I have no idea (view spoiler)), which pretty much ruined everything for me. To be honest I did enjoy the first part of this book. The problem is it all went downhill very fast after I hit the 40% mark.

My name is Sarah and I'm an idiot. It's my own fault if I didn't like this book.

Silly assumption #1:
I thought that this was dark Urban Fantasy. Oh please don't look at me like that, it's bad enough as it is. Since I'm a reformed self-spoiling queen, I no longer read book blurbs. I read somewhere this was UF, saw the title for the series (night=dark right? Right.) and my brain short-circuited. My two grey cells went from PNR to dark UF in less time than it takes to blink. So here I was, rubbing my hands in anticipation, expecting wonderfully gritty times.

If this isn't PNR with Chick Lit tendencies I don't know what it is. I almost went into sugar shock from all the luuuurrrrve oozing from these pages. Oh get off your high horses will you? I'm not saying it's a bad thing and I understand a vast majority loves it but I just can't stand all that romantic crap. There, I said it. I'm the alien from outer space who wants to scream every time Bones says "I love you Kitten."

Silly assumption #2:
I expected Bones to be an aggravating Alpha male. Oh please don't even think about laughing okay? Most of my very good friends here go in heavy panting mode whenever he is mentioned (you know who you are people) so I logically assumed Bones was a total (hence irresistible) asshole. What I failed to take into consideration is that my dear friends are lovely girls who like lovely guys. Me? The bastards get me in heavy panting mode every time.

Bones? A decaffeinated, diet alpha male. I thought he was cute at first but cute gets old really fast in my book. And I didn't think he was a particularly butt-kicking lead either. Or mysterious. Or edgy. Then he went overboard with the "I love you Kitten" machine gun and I just couldn't take it anymore. Ultimately I though he was just kind of… boring? Okay, go ahead, unleash your rage on me now. Then again, you should actually be thanking me for this. Maybe even consider throwing a party here. "Why" you ask? Consider this: that's one book boyfriend I won't be stealing away from you. WOW!

Silly assumption #3:
I thought Cat was supposed to be a totally awesome badass heroine. The cut, cut, cut, slice, slice, slice type. Or better said the slay, slay, slay type. I mean night + huntress + grave that surely means total badass right? Right . Silly little me also expected a complex character (she is half-vampire, half-human after all) with lots of depth.

Cat? A badass? Please. So she kills vampires here and there. That doesn't make her a particularly fierce, butt-kicking character in my book. But that's not the worst of it. The problem with Cat is that she is so immature she makes me want to scream. Okay, I have to admit she's not as bad as dear Sookie. Because, frankly, no one can be as silly as Sookie. But I digress. Cat. The girl acts like a 15-year-old. With Bones, with her mom. With Bones because of her mom. With her mom because of Bones [insert scream here] I thought my eyeballs were going to pop out of their sockets from eye-rolling so much. And then Cat decided to pretend Timmie was her boyfriend. That just did me in. How old are you exactly? Twelve?

So there you have it. I got to 74% and couldn't take it anymore. Mostly because of all the ♫ lovey-dovey ♫ feels but also because I was pretty much bored to death. I mean, let's be honest here, the plot is virtually non-existent. If you take out all the Bones/Cat relationship blah blah there is very little left. And what's left isn't particularly interesting.

BUT. Let's end this on a more positive note. This book features pretty much everything I don't like: romance, nice male lead *shudders* and immature female lead. SO. If you like everything I don't like, there's a good chance you will LOVE this book. Besides, the mere fact that I disliked this book should give you an indication of how extremely enjoyable it is. YOU WILL LOVE IT I TELL YOU.

Still unsure about this? Make sure you go and read these enthusiastic reviews: Shelly's, Danae's, Robin's, Jo's and Vicky's (if she ever gets over her laziness and finally writes it that is). After you do you probably won't believe these lovely girls and I actually read the same book. We did. It's just that I'm the cold-hearted freak who didn't get it. Come on, off you go now!

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) Hey Asya, we're thinking of reading this one this coming weekend, would that work for you?

Cathy I didn't really like it the first time I read it....

Mariana I could do a re-read of this, it's been too long :)

message 6: by Veronica (new)

Veronica Rosa Loved this series and it gets better as it goes. :)

message 7: by Lea (new) - added it

Lea Feb 13, you say ? I might join you...

Robin (Bridge Four) I will tag along one your thread wherever you put it. I love me a little Kat and Bones, sadly no time to reread it though.

Asya oOSarahOo wrote: "Hey Asya, we're thinking of reading this one this coming weekend, would that work for you?"

Yes! Can't wait :)

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) Woot, woot! Lots of innocent bystanders kidnapped, I love it!

Just created a discussion thread in BBB for this one. Let me know if you need an invite to the group!

@Cathy: wanna try a reread, see if you like it better the second time around?^^

Veronica Rosa Can't wait to see your thoughts on this one.

Asya oOSarahOo wrote: "Just created a discussion thread in BBB for this one. Let me know if you need an invite to the group!

Why are the same people discussing books in a million different groups? It's getting confusing. And yes, I need an invite.

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) @Veronica: I've heard lots of things about Bones^^ We'll see how this goes;)

@Asya: is this book being discussed in a different group?

message 14: by Veronica (new)

Veronica Rosa I like Bones, although he gets much better with the later books. And when he interacts with Vlad the Impaler. *swoon*

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) Vlad the Impaler! That's such a hilarious name hahaha! Is he cruel, vengeful and malevolent? He better be otherwise I'll probably be disappointed;o)

message 16: by Veronica (new)

Veronica Rosa Ooooh, you will LOVE Vlad. He's evil, cruel and simply delicious. He also lives up the to the name, which, of course, was given to the original Dracula.

Robin (Bridge Four) Lol....I feel so young again. I haven't stalked anyone since I was a teenager. I bet I'm better at it now.

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) @Veronica: evil? Cruel? Delicious? *faints*

@Robin: time to dry clean that stalking cape^^

message 19: by Veronica (new)

Veronica Rosa He doesn't show up until the later books. However, he did get his own spin off series. I've been bad and haven't read the latest book yet. Vlad is one of my favourite characters. So damn yummy.

He isn't in this book?! You evil woman!

message 21: by Veronica (new)

Veronica Rosa Umm, sorry... but now you have something to look forward to! ;)
And that was me getting you back for this current obsession of mine. *laughs* Damn Kate Daniels for being so freaken good.

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

I think Vlad comes in the story in book 4??? But there's plenty of yummy male vampires to swoon over in the meantime. Bones, Ian (my favorite), Spade, Mencheres... can't think of any more at the moment.

message 23: by Veronica (new)

Veronica Rosa Mmm, I love Ian. Yep, definitely enough yummy vampires to keep Sarah occupied until Vlad shows up.

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) Okay, I get it. Dear old Vlad here is the Eric Northman of this series. You guys are going to be the death of me. BUT I have to admit it does sound (from what Shelly says) like I'm to be assaulted by a swarm of yummy testosterone. My insides are feverish with anticipation. (view spoiler)

message 25: by Asya (new) - rated it 5 stars

Asya Have I mentioned I have a weakness for redheads? It's all thanks to Ian and Packard!

Hey, tomorrow's the 13th! Only one more day!

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) Argh! So much pressure! I have to finish another book first! How do I get myself mixed up into these things?

Robin (Bridge Four) I'm picking up my stalker cape from the dry cleaners on the way home. Totally ready to lurk

Maggie Q is amazing.

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

No, Bones is the Eric Northman of this series. Vlad is just a great supporting character that comes in halfway. He's only in a few of them, I think. Bones is in every single one of them. A lot. Nom nom nom nom

I feel like such a idiot whenever you guys talk about tv shows. No, wait, not an idiot, a retarded cavewoman. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to add that to the list of my many (if well-hidden) endearing qualities.

message 34: by Veronica (new)

Veronica Rosa I rarely ever watch TV anymore. There are some shows that I'll go out of my way to watch, but yeah, there just isn't enough time. I'd rather read. :)

:D Well, you can always ask us and watch only the best shows. Those with time-travel and adventure and Benedict Cumberbatch :D

Veronica Rosa @Asya, did you see Benedict Cumberbatch's interview on Graham Norton's show? He does the Smaug voice and oh my... *fans myself*

Yes ma'am! I <3 Capt. Jack Harkness *Sigh

Veronica Rosa I'm a Tennant fan. Simply adored him as the doctor. Recently I watched the first season with my 6 year old son and was so amazed at how young Capt Jack was.

Vlad! (Swoon)

I know! I enjoy Torchwood as well, and you are right!
Tennant was great, but I have an unreasonable attraction to Christopher Eccleston. He was suck a jerk, but I loved him as the Doctor. ;)

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

I loved Eccleston as the Doctor! He is my favorite. I like Tennant too. I am only on S3 of that series.

I am way behind on shows too. I have a young daughter, so we always put on cartoons or family movies. When she goes to bed, I choose to read or get on the computer. So my list of things to catch up on just grows and grows...sigh.

:D Benedict's interviews are always good.
Did you see him in Frankenstein?

I haven't watched the last season of Torchwood yet. I feel like it's end will be the end of a whole Tennant-Barrowman era and no Doctor or spin-off will ever be that good again :(

Btw - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxB1g... "Reading's for looosers!" :D

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) I go away for 5 minutes and this discussion goes out of control. You people cannot be trusted.

I haven't turned my TV on in about 3 months. Or more. Can't remember. But. Sherlock. Yes. I'll turn the TV on for that. See, I'm not *that* hopeless^^

And please ladies, no more swooning over Vlad in my presence. Not until I find out more about him that is. Then I'll probably lay claim to him and you'll happily back off. Thank you.

message 49: by Asya (new) - rated it 5 stars

Asya Can we lust after Jensen Ackles, David Tennant and Aaron Stanford then? :D

message 50: by Veronica (new)

Veronica Rosa No, I haven't watched Frankenstein. In fact, I've only seen him in Sherlock. I need to branch out. :)
I actually refuse to watch the last season of Torchwood. I saw the first 2 episodes and hated it so much that I never went back. I prefer to fondly remember the earlier seasons.

Oh dear lord, that Scottish accent! *sigh* I was always sad they wouldn't let him use that accent and he had to do a British one.
