The Silver Gryphon (Mage Wars, #3)

It's been a dog's age since I last read this, but it's held up reasonably well. Maybe not quite 5 stars, but 4 and a bit, and I'll round up for nostalgia's sake and for creativity's sake. Basically, this is a plot that is very close to unique in fantasy, in that it's a classic Man vs. Nature plot. There's no cackling evildoer here, no demon or wizard or ancient prophecy. It's about survival, and I *really* like that element. To say more would be a spoiler, but suffice to say that the predators here are among the most memorable foes I've seen in any book.

Huh. Interesting. I never made it this far in the series and love the idea of survival Valdemar. Lackey's dog-predators that weave together like a ball of snakes were pretty memorable in Winds of Fate or whatever book of the series they showed up in. :)

...are you sure you're not thinking about this book? Because that is in fact the critter that's causing a lot of the trouble here. Although I never read Winds of Fate, so I can't entirely say.
Definitely not, but I can see them being the critter. They were brilliant wherever they appeared in the Winds series. I was thinking of her imagery lately because my new hound-puppy is a leggy, leggy, sinewy girl and plays half the time with her head upside down touching the floor, a silly mix of play bow and playfulness.
That sounds thoroughly adorable. (I am missing my spaniel).
Anyway, I've been re-reading Lackey a bit recently. I read a LOT of Mercedes Lackey in high school and was feeling a bit nostalgic.

The pup truly is; she is such a joy. Loves everyone.
I did too; made it through most of Heralds before I aged out/felt she was recycling material. I read "Vows and Honor" series a billion times. Still on my shelves.

My library had a very random assortment of her books. I actually ended up skipping most of the Valdemar books in favor of some of her other series (the Elemental Masters and Hundred Kingdoms books).
And repetition... yeah, I can see that. She's *ridiculously* prolific. I think she writes about 4 or 5 books per year?

These three Gryphon books are actually the only books by Lackey I have read. They were gifted to me by my sister, who generally knows my taste. I really enjoyed them and when I read them had no idea they were part of a larger world, so obviously they stand alone quite well too.
I actually read Silver Gryphon first (like I said, my library had a *random* assortment of books). Then read the first one a while later, and then read the second one.... sometime? It's on my goodreads but I am utterly blanking on the story.
It helps that the Gryphon books are set about a thousand-odd years before the rest of the series. So they're more prequels with only tenuous connections to the rest of the setting.
