The Lies of Locke Lamora (Gentleman Bastard, #1)

DNF.
I dunno maybe I'll try again at a later date. This is strange because it wasn't because I didn't like this book but more that I didn't have any drive to finish it. I had no connection with any of the characters and I found myself not caring about the story either.
5 Years later...
Past Regan was so wrong this book was SO GOOD

Such a freaking good book... Love me some Lynch.
Patrick, If you loved The Name of the Wind, you should go read Patrick Rothfuss's review of The Lies of Locke Lamora here on Goodreads. Rothfuss is becoming my go to guy for finding amazing books to read.

Patrick Gallanes: I read "The Lies of Locke Lamora" before I read "The Name of the Wind" and I really enjoyed it. however it is, in my opinion, not even close to being as good as The Name of the Wind. The story is interesting and faster paced than TNotW however there isn't even a comparison worldbuilding-wise and for some weird reason, depsite the characters being really "enjoyable", I didn't feel any kind of "link" with them and I am usually the type to get so "involved" in characters that I cry, and laugh, and throw my book on the ground quite often when reading books. So I guess it depends on what you like. TL;DR: The Lies of Locke Lamore is very enjoyable/entertaining but much less gripping than The Name of the Wind, and lesser character and world-building. :)
I remember it being a slow start, but midway it really picked up and by the end I was crying. This book has a lot of setup but the end is worth it. Maybe the audio book would be better for you? It's very well done.
I was coming to see if you had read this. Based on your love of big fantasy and of heists, this seemed like a sure bet. I will say that it took me time to find a rhythm because of the interludes into the childhood of Locke and his mates. The first book is very heavy on telling rather than showing, but it is one of my favorite series. I hope you give it another chance at some point.
lol since i too felt like past regan i might give it another try some time.... okay no, i might not but its good to know it lives up to its rep for you
Love this one! The 2nd and 3rd are not as good, unfortunately. The flashbacks get longer and tedious. The 3rd takes an out right turn for the wtf kind of weird. I'll still continue reading the series, but not expecting much anymore.
Keep reading. The second one is my favourite.
Waiting all these years will probably work out to be a blessing :D
As I understand it, the author has some IRL challenges that have caused long looooong delays between the releases of his books. And we all know the pain and angst of waiting for our next eagerly anticipated book!

I saw on booktube that you was reading this again and I just saw DNF but I'm glad you came back to it and enjoyed it this time. I'm currently on red Seas under red Skies.
Like pst Regan, I DNF'd this as well. I just couldn't seem to get into it. Always figured I'd give it another go at some point.
same happened to me, DNF'd the first time, absolutely fell in love with it afterwards, book 2 is an absolute treat!
I tried going through with it a couple weeks ago too and couldn't finish it :( I felt like there was just too much back and forth with dialogues and it wasn't going anywhere... Maybe I will try reading it again at a later date
I picked this up 5 years ago as well and could not engage. Came across it midway through pandemic summer and fished out the bookmark, determined to find out why so many of my friends love it so much and lo! It is amazing! Most fun I’ve had with my nose in a book in years! Glad it fell back into my lap.
The exact same thing happened with me. I started this book 2 years ago, well tbh I started it 3 times reading just 4 or 5 chapters 2 years ago. Always DNFed, never that I didn’t like it, I just felt disconnected. But this year Feb, I was determined to get past at least 8 chapters and I had already completed the book when I put it down.
