Four and a half hard-earned godstars!

Once upon a time, an angel and a devil pressed their hands to their hearts and started the apocalypse.

Ever since reading the end of Days of Blood and Starlight I have eagerly anticipated the release of Dreams of Gods and Monsters, wondering what would happen to Karou and Akiva, the angels and chimera. The world of Eretz and Earth. Ignore how many days this took me to read. In an ideal world it would have taken me three days at the most and I was really engrossed in the story but unfortunately I did not have the time.

I admit that I was a little apprehensive about reading Dreams of Gods and Monsters. I've come across several final books in a trilogy that haven't lived up to my expectations. It would be such a shame to be let down at the final hurdle. Thankfully I experienced no disappointment whatsoever. Dreams of Gods and Monsters is as carefully crafted as the others, if not more so, considering the new faces central to the plot that appear near the end of this fantastic trilogy.

There are some people who would have preferred not to have the Stelians and Eliza play such a huge role in the book but I actually liked Eliza and she provided us with an interesting viewpoint; the conflicting beliefs of science and religion and the people's reaction to the turn of events.

What really made this book was the characters. Their own personal struggles and development endeared me to them even more. I loved Zuzana and Mik, Liraz, Eliza, Ziri, Issa and of course, Akiva and Karou.

“We are the beginning ... We always have been. This time, let it be more than a beginning.”

I admit, I was a tad disappointed with the amount of time Akiva and Karou had together, amidst the mayhem and chaos. I understand they had a lot going on. Karou was the sole person with ability to resurrect the remaining chimera and Akiva was just beginning to come to terms with his newfound power. Despite this, the stolen moments they shared were immensely satisfying but secretly, I would have loved there to be more of them.

My expectations were met and more. Much happened; revelations were revealed, alliances were formed, trusts shattered and of course battles were fought. I loved the ending even though it wasn't what I'd expected. I would be very surprised if Laini Taylor doesn't write another spin-off/sequel series or trilogy to this one. It was certainly left open for her to revisit if she wishes. Personally I'll be keeping my fingers crossed, just in case.

If you loved the first two books there is no doubt that you'll enjoy this one. I will definitely be exploring some more of the author's works whilst waiting (hopefully) for the release of some more books set in this universe.
