This book was so whimsical, dark, and beautiful. A mashup of folktales, biblical/religious elements, and stunning creativity, Before the Devil Knows You're Here is a unique, fast-paced tale. Once I was in the mood for something other than a comfort read, I couldn't stop listening. Rich characters, especially Catalina and Paul, move the story forward in a compelling narrative about life and death, hope and despair, love and loss. I adore the focus on family here, the honesty of what it looks like to love one another despite past mistakes, flaws, and hidden truths. If you're looking for a Mexican-American perspective with a dark twist on some beloved old folktales, look no further. I so enjoyed this book and highly recommend it, especially for this time of year!
