I'm glad that the author had a warning at the start of the book, because honestly we needed it. After reading that every time I was reading a "happy" part I was waiting for the shoe to drop, for the horrible to happen. By the end of the book I got Scarlet's thinking of not wanting to know good, that it hurt too much to loose it and boy...did Scarlet loose a lot in this one. She was doing ok at the start. Sure life was hard, but it got a bit easier with Mama Winston's help, better still when Billy wasn't so surly.
Billy did a great job of being the "man" in the family, wrangling the kids, helping his mother, pretty much everything. It left him wound tight, which I think is why he was an ass to Scarlet at the start. The more time he spent with Scarlet the more like a "kid" he became, which is what he needed.
The few "good" days the couple had were great, but when it went to crap, it went to crap hugely. Billy and Cletus paid a big price to keep others safe, one that will affect them in years to come.
I look forward to reading the next book...I want to see Billy and Scarlet as adults and hope that they find what they had as kids quickly.
