Claudius the God
by
Not a lot between this and I, Claudius, the first book. Both give a grand and dramatic overview of Ancient Rome through the eyes of the forth emperor and again features some brilliant characterization. If Livia was the most illuminating character from I, Claudius then here I'd say it's Claudius’ close friend and political advisor, Herod Agrippa, though I'd wish it had been Mossalina, and if anyone was unlucky with women it was Claudius. This book had more poignancy out of the two, due mostly to the emperor's attitude to her betrayals. The writing is great but took me a while to adjust to it in the first book as it's rather dense.
