I just finished this on audio book.
Before reading this book, I read a review in which someone said they envied the people who would get to read this story for the first time, and honestly, that is the best possible way to describe how GOOD this novel is.
I’m sitting here absolutely blown away.
Two things I absolutely do not do often with books - laugh out loud, or cry. I did both, multiple times. In fact, I absolutely sobbed in parts of this.
I was unsure at first how this was going to go, but as Evelyn’s life story unfolded, I just became utterly enraptured. In her found family, career, relationships… All of it.
I loved the writing style - everything to the point without waffle or endless monologues taking their time to reach conclusions.
Evelyn’s character is deep and complex and oh so flawed. But God, what a woman! Ruthless, driven, ambitious, protective, loyal, uncompromising, caring… I felt each of her hardships and conundrums. I felt her heartbreak, her anger, and especially her sadness. Through every stage of the book, the writing remained SO true to her. Her decisions were at times shocking but not at all surprising because, it’s Evelyn - of course that was her decision.
The story flowed without ever falling flat. It was just wonderful. It was well researched and brilliant, moving through times, carefully considering the issues at hand.
Although I do disagree with her about one thing. I believed the greatest love of her life (not counting her child) was Harry. The “relationship” between Evelyn and Harry Cameron was absolute for me. Both of them hold an extremely special place in my heart.
That’s all I’ll say about that. I refuse to hand out spoilers for this because I think it’s one of those books where going in blind is absolutely essential. I’m so glad I didn’t stumble upon any spoilers before listening to it, and I HIGHLY recommend the audiobook if you have access to it. The actors were phenomenal.
It’s the first book I’ve ever read where anything less than a four star review makes absolutely no sense to me. I cried like a goddamn baby over this and I never do that. Not ever.
I read some of the one star reviews before listening and the points that were raised were absolutely ridiculous tbh. I have my theories about why people picked such silly things to hate it for, but I’ll keep them to myself. 😉
If you don’t like it because you don’t like it, then fine. Not every book is for every person, but some of you need to give your heads a wobble before writing any other reviews. Seriously. 😅😂
