New half-year resolution — I need to stop taking recommendations from Booktok.

I’m not gonna to lie here, if this series hadn't been raved about everywhere I looked online, I probably wouldn't have read it. I’m trying to stop reading TikTok popular books, but the rating in this book made me picked it up. Fourth Wing was my first book by Rebecca Yarros, so I didn't know what exactly to expect, but at least now I know that it will be my first and last story by this author, because it turned out not to be for me.

This review probably won't cover all the things I didn't like about it, as I started skipping pages after about sixty percent of the book. But without further ado, let's finally get to the point of my review — what exactly didn't work out for me in this story.

The story didn’t hooked me up from the beginning at all. The main reason for this is probably because the writing style didn't speak out to me. I actually dnfed it the day before, because of that reason, but decided to give it another chance because I thought it might not be my day for it or maybe I wasn't in the right mood after a whole week. At one point I was even glad about this decision, but my enthusiasm didn’t last long. I have to be honest and say that around forty percent of the book I was pretty invested in the story when the dragons finally showed up. Unfortunately, it turned out I was only interested when the dragons were involved. The rest was just boring for me.

The second thing is that I felt no connection to the characters. Literally nothing. I must admit that Violet had some great moments, but most of the time I was just embarrassed by her actions. The example.

“Glad to see our year apart hasn’t dulled your tongue, Vi.”
“Oh,” I toss over my shoulder as we walk into the hallway, “I can do quite a few things with my tongue. You’d be impressed.”

That line sounded like a horny frat boy.

Also, if you didn’t get it that she was short and tiny, the author kept reminding you of that, because that information was indeed very important.

"I’m too short."

“So she’s small.” Mom scans me up and down"

"Good gods, I don’t even reach his collarbone."

"I’m shorter than most."

“You’re pretty small for a rider, but it looks like you made it.”

"I’m at a disadvantage, that I’m too small to climb its foreleg and mount,"

“You’re tiny.” He says it like an insult"

"I’m the smallest of our squad"

“I’m too short for the ramp,” I whisper to Rhi."

“I’m too short to span the distance!” I hiss, uncaring that anyone could hear us."

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ description

That's only from twenty-six percent of the book. I did not include the rest, because I would not have enough space for the rest of my review.

Moving to Xaden — aka, your typical fantasy hero. Seriously. He was your usual tall, black haired, with strong sharp jaw, muscled body, but this time he was riding dragons. I almost forgot, he was

"Flaming hot. Scorching hot. Gets-you-into-trouble-and-you-like-it level of hot."

you get the picture. He was also tall. I've written about it before, but we've also been reminded of it a lot. I had to mention that sentence he said here, because I was laughing my ass off at that moment.

"You have incredibly touchable skin.”

Touchable skin? What does it mean buddy?

Honestly, the dragons were more interesting than the main characters here. If the book was about Tairn, I'd probably be more eager to read it. This dragon had better personality than both of them. At least for me. Tairn was literally my favorite character here. That says a lot about how much I enjoyed this book.

The last thing is the romance between Xaden and Violet. This series is supposed to have five books and they already done the deed, are in love — probably because I didn't make it to this part, and have a strong connection — again, probably because I didn't make it to this part. I thought that at least their first meeting, which is usually quite important, will be more spectacular. But, no. They met in the fourth percent of the book and I was like "Well, that’s it? Already?". They were supposed to be enemies to lovers, the reasoning behind it made even sense, but they delivered nothing. I felt no chemistry between them, no tension, especially the sexual one, and no hatred that they should feel towards each other as enemies. Almost every time Violet saw Xaden it went like that.

"I hate him so much"

‎ ‎ ‎‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ description

"But he is so sexy and beautiful and sexy. And tall."

Not even their first kiss and the cute nickname the hero usually gives the heroine saved them. The first kiss happened after Violet found out that they could feel when their dragons banged. Yes, they could feel their dragons banging. This information made me feel quite uncomfortable. Extremely even. I know they could get rid of that with some magic or whatever, but just why? The nickname "Violence" that Xaden called Violet was tacky and the book could easily have survived without it. Not to mention this line.

"you’re really a violent little thing, aren’t you?”

My only thought was From Blood and Ash. It sounds damn similar. Even though I only read the first book from this series.

Moving forward to the things I liked.

The dragons.

Ending my review, all I will say is that I am pretty sad and disappointed that I didn’t end up liking this book. I wanted to start a new fantasy series that I would be obsessed with, but I guess we can't have everything we want. I’m happy for people who loved it though. Good for you guys.

hope “You have incredibly touchable skin” hahahaha 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣💀💀 I can’t. Book tok 99% of the time fails me lol. I can never trust it anymore. Sorry it was such a bust, especially with all the hype its been getting!! and they can feel their dragons having sex ????? wtf.... Great review and I hope your next read is better!🩷🩷

Deeksha Bhardwaj This is a five book series??😱 I won't survive that long with this little chemistry between the MCs. Awesome Review m review, Aleksandra!

Thank you girl!🫶 I really should stop reading booktok books 💀

Thanks!🫶🫶 Yes the author said on her TikTok page that this series will probably have five books

Kara Ahh I completely agree! There was just so much unnecessary repetition throughout. For me, this book read as someone just decided to combine every YA fantasy book of our teenage years and add some smut … however I will probably read the second book just to see how things pan out lol

ivanareadsalot loools this review is everything😂!!! i love it so much!!! 😹

Imme van Gorp Okaaaaay so I guess the hype was lying once more🫡🫡 Maybe I shouldn’t read this after all lmaoo

message 8: by Arini (new)

Arini this review makes me happy. 😆 i enjoyed the book more than you, but any review thats not raving about the book makes me feel seen. ive read this authors contemporary romance books and liked it a lot. this one was just okay and definitely overrated. great review! 💗

Steph (Teacups & Tropes) I loved this one tbh. But BookTok got me with Divine Rivals. I was BORED AF THE WHOLE TIME 🫠

Yep you are right actually 😭💀 I probably won’t because I didn’t feel connected to the story at all

len ❀ i bet some people thought violet’s dialogue made her cool and badass meanwhile i’m getting second hand embarrassment just from what she said she can can do with her tongue 💀

also the whole “i hate them so much” and then five minutes later “but they’re so beautiful and sexy” is literally every enemies to lovers. this isn’t even an opinion, it’s a fact. i’m not surprised it’s marketed as that and in reality it hardly delivers.

message 13: by gio (new)

gio “Incredibly touchable skin” 😂😂😂 this review was too good!! Honestly, you’re the first person I see that didn’t like this book. I’m still curious to read and see if I’ll like it, but sometimes books are too hyped for no reason.

I might actually try her other books one day, but we will see 🧐 and thank u! 🫶

Llakshmi I’m not going to lie, I’m still going to read this book because I just need to know about the hype but I feel like your review is going to make me see the book in a whole new set of eyes. I usually stay away from the reviews but yours was the first one star review I’ve seen on my feed and I couldn’t help myself😈😈 amazing review aleksandra❤️

Mila (Semi-Hiatus) *removes from tbr*

Angela Completly agree! Another thing that bothered me is that the rest of the characters could be replaced with rocks and the book would be the exact same

Aparna Great review Aleksandra🤣😂!! I gave the book 3 stars and you've gotten me reviewing my review now. I didn't see there were so many mentions of her being short mostly because I used audiobook and I was zoned out most of the time! But damn that's a lot of mentions. And I had the same thoughts about Violet's personality. Most of the time it felt like she hasn't seen men.🤷🏻‍♀️

✨Kayla of The Court Of Dreams✨ I LOVED this book- sorry you hated it so much!💔

It’s definitely A FACT. These days it’s so hard to find real enemies to lovers 🥲

You are actually right 🤣

Mel (Epic Reading) Funny I have been thinking the same thing about TikTok recommendations lately.
I haven t read this one yet; and it’s only on my list for hype purposes (even though my primary genre is fantasy).
I keep avoiding it and maybe your review will solidify that for me.

Milo (if lost, return to hot fictional character) sad you didn't end up liking this, but i hope your next book will be way better <3 great review babes

message 28: by Lau ♡ (new)

Lau ♡ Great review, Aleksandra! I know a lot of people like that kind of recycled hero, so i get why this is so popular. That being said, I HATE reading the same recycled heroes over and over and the audicity of people saying how real and complex they are 🤮 look, i like the typical badass heroines but i acknowledge the fact that they are a lot of things but unique isn't one of them 😂😂

[̲̅K̲̅][̲̅a̲̅][̲̅t̲̅][̲̅i̲̅][̲̅e̲̅] (Semi-Hiatus) Amazing review! I haven’t read this book and I don’t think I intend to. I’ve heard it borrowed a lot of other book premises and the only good thing about it was the writing. I hate cringey booktok books so I think I’m going to pass on this one. So sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy it but I hope your next read is better! ❤️❤️

I've been on the fence about adding this to my TBR. So... perhaps not 😂

Ana (readwithana_) It took me approximately 3.5 pages to dnf and I’m so glad I did 😂

Autum Sad you didn’t like this! I will say tho I feel like tiktok recommendations are very subjective to your FYP. My fyp is filled with fantasy like Brandon Sanderson etc. i hadn’t even seen fourth wing on there! But I curated my fyp so carefully 😭😭😭

Jen's Quick & Dirty Reviews Yessss. I have been hesitant to read any booktok Recs.

eedeeyuh(hiatus) I really loved this one but at the same time I see how everything you’re saying is true😭I just ignored most of it though 😌

Luna Ferrara Rebecca yarros while writing this book: have I mentioned that Violet is short in the last 20 pages? Yes but I'm still gonna repeat it here

message 45: by Dorn (new) - rated it 2 stars

Dorn Permenter I’m starting to realize if BookTok hates it, I’ll probably enjoy it. Otherwise, I tread lightly. This one was a hard DNF when Vi claimed hygiene was unimportant because who has time to bathe?

luna ʚɞ i’m sorry you didn’t like it!

Arooj You are so right. I mean my insta algorithm keeps flooding with the spoilers so i avoided them and gave it a read. These months i am stuck on fantasy trope so i read this one. I have read like so many fantasy books like acotar, tog(4books) and they were so good but this book was absolutely worst. It said enemies to lover. Where is the enemy part. Like jude and cardan( the cruel pince) that series depicts the classical and true approach to enemies to lover this book just not have the enemies vibe. He helped her every step of the way. This is not the enemy trope. I just couldn't enjoy it. It was 600 pages long after every 50 pages it kept boring me. I tried so hard to like enjoy but couldn't. May be throne of glass set the expectations high for me. But series like hunger games like when u read series like that u enjoy yourself. Good's read review is totally thrashed. I mean even with some of the scenes of violet and xaden i couldn't get excited. Ending was like turnover but the ending could have been so much better. The first book in acotar series is slow pace but i would read it then read this one again. I mean does violet heal and how does she train to be that strong. At first, she had no confidence that she has like all the confidence of the world. No interaction with her mother. She doesnt even think the fact that xaden's parent killed his brother and like starts liking xaden. Which we know at the end but in the story she doesnt seem to think about her mother 's reaction to xaden. She pushed her in the rider's chamber and she couldn't even fight it. Not once i read that my mother wouldn't like xaden or thing like that. Xaden truly played her for sure. As to why i say this because at how the last chapter rolls off. And everyone around her is telling her not to trust him and still she does. I mean throughout the book the author say that she is intelligent yet she couldn't figure how xaden's truth. If she were that intelligent she should have figured it out where xaden's went with his friends when she was hiding in the tree. When she wakes up in the last chapter i am like this foolish girl with love the man all over again even though he did lie to her but she says she will take time to trust him or never a scene like that. I can claim that in the next book within 5 chapters she will love him all over again and forget it even. I just didnt like this Novel and after seeing so many defending and rating it as a top notch i will shift my genre from fantasy to physiological thriller because that troop never lies.
