Do not understand the hype about this book. It is a cheezy, breezy romance novel with a dollop of sci-fi added in. There is really nothing in this to make it a classic or best-seller. I also found Niffenegger's writing to be extremely agitating. The sign of a weak author is when he/she lays everything out in front of you, describing everything, rather than allowing the reader to see things for himself. I would not recommend this book to anyone.
