"If you are free in your mind, what else matters?"
.
Roland the gunslinger, with his mates Eddie, Susannah, Jake, and Oy continue their journey. It's not easy to survive Blaine the monorail, a suicidal train that intents to bring them all to hell, but they manage. Thanks to Eddie and his nonsense jokes.
.
During the journey, we get a long flashback as Roland finally decides to tell his story to his mates. We get to know Roland's mean teacher Cort, Roland's past mates Cuthbert and Alain, also Roland's first love Susan Delgado.
.
There's a big reference to The Wizard of Oz in this book. And it becomes funny because Roland is the only one who doesn't know the story. As Eddie, Susannah, and Jake break into lines and song from The Wizard of Oz (no, not Over the Rainbow), Roland only stares at them confused 🙈 Oh, Roland.
But they do have similarities. For instead, Dorothy and her friends (the scarecrow, the tin man, the cowardly lion) must follow the yellow brick road to reach the wizard's palace, while Roland and her Ka-Tet must follow the path of the beam to reach the Dark Tower.
.
Come and have your heart broken by this book 😢 Because it's really painful to learn the story of young Roland and his foolishness. At the age of 14, he has lost so many things. And he's yet to lose more.
It took me a long time to finish this book (but not as long as when Stephen King wrote it--he took a break for 26 years) because it's just so painful. And the worst part is ... I know the pain is not over. It will continue as the journey in search of Dark Tower continues.
.
It has some hilarious moments, also some boring ones. But all of them make a colorful journey that I don't regret making.
