The Alloy of Law (Mistborn, #4)

I surprisingly large step down from the quality of the original Mistborn series
Check out my new youtube channel where I show my instant reactions to reading fantasy books seconds after I finish the book.
I wanted to like this book so badly, and my expectations were sky high. Unfortunately, I just couldn't get into it like other Sanderson works. The world felt rather bland to me, the story was shallow, and the twists weren't as mind blowing as some others (except for one at the end). I felt like Sanderson was trying his best to write a "Pratchett" type story without the comedic prowess that Pratchett had.
I think Sanderson thrives when he has huge, epic scale books to work with. And I think he comes up short when trying to write these shorter novels.
I did however enjoy the two main characters and how they interacted with each other. They were the one bright spot for me in this story.
I'll keep reading this series, but my excitement level has dropped significantly.

I DNF'd this book after the first few chapters a while back, but I fully intend give it another go this year. I hope that the remainder of the series recaptures the magic of the first trilogy (judging by the previous comments, it looks like there is a difference of opinion on that).
Great review! I'm curious to see if I have the same feelings as well. I'll be sure to check out your YT channel too!
I personally loved this book. With that being said, I think you will enjoy Era 2 more once you get to Bands of Mourning.
The first time I read these books I was disappointed as well. But only because I was coming down from the Mistborn high I was on. This is a good series and I feel because people are expecting it to be like the first three books it doesn't get the praise it should have. I waited several months in between and read it again as a new series and was enamored. The audio version is just amazing as well. I for one love Michael Kramer and it was a pleasure to hear all of Wayne's different accents. Maybe try it again going in with a different mindset.
