it was ok

This book is an exacting re-tread of the inexplicably popular first book of the Twilight series, the book from which the entire series earned it's nomenclature. Fortunately, Mrs. Meyers (also the name brand of my favorite laundry detergent) proves that she is learning something as she goes along. Thankfully, the writing is improving from book to book though the mythos of the vampires and werewolves still remains contradictory and immaturely expressed.

The best part is that unlike the first book wherein the lack of cohesion made Bella seem like a floating head lost in the absence of either explained or implied physical structure, Edward seems to have a body and isn't entirely cerebrally constructed. It's also nice to get some idea of what Edward ever saw in Bella in the first place because, frankly, the first book was a hot mess when it came to addressing the reciprocity of their relationship. If only there were some indication of Edward's perspective in the first book, he might not have seemed like such an unbalanced and stilted lack-wit.

Unfortunately, since this is such an exacting re-tread, it also seems to offer very little in terms of intrigue in terms of plot and seems grossly overdue, possibly to the point of irrelevance. I do not understand why Mrs. Meyers chose not to give any insight into the Edward character whatsoever in the first book, making him so inscrutable and obtuse as to render his behavior ridiculous and irrational. When Bella asks Edward if he has multiple personality disorder the day before she falls "irrevocably in-love" with him, she had a point. Based on the way the character is written in the first two books, he seems mentally and emotionally unbalanced bordering on deranged. Then in an abrupt about-face, Mrs. Meyers re-writes the entire first book from Edward's perspective in the 5th installment of the series.

This simply smacks of stunt-writing in a series that seems to be running out of imagination. Poor Mrs. Meyers seems to be learning just how difficult is it to keep a teeny-bopper soap-opera going. Perhaps now she might re-write the rest of the novels now that she has developed her skills a little and integrate all of the characters together?

ADDENDUM:

I finally realized why it is that this telling of the introductory novel from Edward's perspective rankles to no end. Edward is written like he is autistic or has asperger syndrome - as though he has no understanding of anything human despite not only living among humans for more than a century, but also that he was human himself once upon a time.

Regarding the issue of Edward's almost complete lack of sexuality in the first novel, it still seems absurd that he killed for a decade while finding his path, but never once considered having sex with anyone ever. It would have been more realistic and interesting if he had voraciously engaged in sexual behavior before adopting a monastic lifestyle, abstaining from all sex for years, possibly decades, before meeting Bella. Otherwise, it just makes him seem even more freakish.

These books truly seem to have been written for 12-year-olds, where holding hands and piggy back rides are the epitome of "love" and neither lead character has any knowledge or interest in sex. By 17, even if a teen doesn't fully understand sexual desire, they at least have a desire for that unknown quantity where their emotions run so hot it feels like their hearts cannot be contained within the confines of their chest and an intensity of longing that certainly feels real at the time.

Ying Thank you for showing me exactly why so many girls at my school are in love with Twilight!!! Twilight is definitely geared towards 8th graders:]

message 2: by Amy (new) - rated it 1 star

Amy After reading the books ( the 4 of them) and Midnight Sun I couldn't understand the fascination.( The book were just okay, there are tons of series that are better) Anyway my point is that after reading your review I understand what was missing (beside the plot holes) and also why all the little girls liked so much the books. Thanks for explaining!!

Natalie I agree with most of what you have said, until the addendum. You are confusing love and sex. They are not the same thing. You DO NOT have to have sex to fall passionately in love. Yes when you are in love (and married) sex it is an amazing experience, but sex IS NOT an indicator of love. Edward came from a different time. When people had, or at least pretended to have morals. Sexual activity was kept private and advocated for marriage. Sex was not a recreational sport. But lets say Edward had no morals, I mean as you say he did go kill people for a decade. Who did he kill? Mostly "bad guys." Who's he going to make love to? He thought he would kill Bella by trying to control himself while making love. It seems WAY out of character for him to rape, or what find a one night stand with some innocent or guilty girl and kill her? Edward viewed sex as an expression of love. He viewed himself as a vigilante in killing the guilty. How could he make love to someone he could justify killing? It would be completely out of character. Don't fall into the trap and think just because someone doesn't have sex they are immature or their relationship is immature. A lasting relationship IS NOT based on physical passion, that ebbs and flows. When you love and respect another person, you can weather the storms of life and will stand the test of time. I just had a baby and I look and feel like crap. I have a huge gut, achene, and I'm hormonal, but my sweet husband (of 10 years) will hold me in his arms and tell me how beautiful I am and how lucky he is to have me. That is love. Not his ability to lie, but to see past my flaws and love me for who I am. There is nothing like real lasting love. Yes there are many flaws in Mrs. Myers entertaining novels, but lack of sex is just not one of them.

Andrea i have to completely agree with Natalie. I find it refreshing to read a romance novel and not be bombarded by moans of pleasure every other page. I also think LOVE and SEX do not go hand and hand anymore. It used to mean something, but not everything. You can love someone and not up into bed with them the first chance you get. People used to swoon over the person they loved rather then jumped them. Dignity is lost in a lot of aspects of our lives these days. And it is very sad.

message 5: by John (new)

John Odeh I agree with some of your critism of the plausibility of certain of Edward's character traits. And I did wonder about how he could have remained an adolescent celibate for 88 years (i.e. September 1918 to August 2006, when he married and first bedded Bella). Especially since he was neither a Catholic monk or priest. However I do have personal experience of men, who have maintained their virginity (however technical well into their late twenties and-or thirties), so it might not be impossible for an old-fashioned WWI era virgin teenage; who never got to fall in love before undergoing the traumatic events of losing his dearly beloved mother, his not so loved father, his dearly beloved immortal soul (as he rightly or wrongly believed at the time), and his dreams of becoming a gallant military hero, to forswear sex. After chastity and celibacy are not solely Roman Catholic practices, Hindu sages, Budhist sages, and assorted mystics of various mileu have been known to practise chastity/celibacy or Brahmacharya as it is called in Hinduism! So who is to say an WWI era American youth, born in 1901, who died to all intents and purposes of the Spanish Influenza, before experiencing carnal love, and who harbors a penchant for the old-fashioned sexual mores of his time, could not have remained chaste/celibate for 87 years (as the book says) before falling for Bella Swan awakened his dormant teenage hormones? Stranger things have been known to happen believe me!
You are wrong though about Edward killing for over a decade! According to the books (i.e. Twilight and The Illustrated official Guide...), Edward only pursued his murdering, human-blood drinking vigilante ways for approximately 4 years. Specifically from 1927 when he rebelled against his adoptive father Carlisle, and left to explore the delights of human blood, until 1931 when he returned to Carlisle and Esme, as the repentant prodigal son; who henceforth hewed strictly to their animal-blood only drinking lifestyle!

Meghan fyi, I take offense to the "autistic" comment, obviously you have never interacted with some one who is considered autistic, and for the record in my opinion people who are autistic are in tune with their environment way more so than the majority of society. yes, they have some social challenges but in my experience they tend to thrive quite a bit
