Honestly, Alan Watts is one of my favorite philosphers, so I would probably rate any of his works with five stars. If you want to challenge your mind to see the world differently through Eastern philosophy, Zen Buddhism in particular, then this is for you!
I first encountered the author through videos on YouTube when trying to seek more peace and tranquility and his reasoning and voice have always helped. I never got to read any of his books until this one (he has a few others).
Written in 1957, I feel that this book becomes more and more relevant to our society as time progresses. Westerners have slowly been familiarizing themselves with Zen and other Buddhist notions, but wrapping your head around an abstract notion that has never been taught to you in your environment always leaves room for confusion and disappointment. If you are feeling this confusion, Alan happens to be one of the best at explaining its intricacies and paradoxes in a way that anyone can understand.
Since the foundation for Zen Buddhism is in Chinese Taoist philosphy, expect to be tutored in this as well, all of which is very fascinating. Even if you don't agree with everything or plan to incorporate any of it in your life, it's still fascinating to read about it all.
