Oh, what to say... I'm on the end of the spectrum that was NOT blown away by this. I'm an avid horror fan and a glutton for urban legends, but this was ALL OVER THE PLACE. I LOVE dark books, but there were some significant flaws.
If you literally HATE men and want to do nothing but BASH men to the point that they shouldn't even write books (seriously?!?!), then you may love this book. This was hard to read and disgusting in engendering that type of hate. I can get down with negativity, but it's not like the story had much to stand on AND did this...
This is a book about an urban legend. If it were a movie, an urban legend would be a B movie in the vein of The Butchering; Jonah Lives, The Meat Puppet, The Abominable Dr. Phibes, etc. At times I could compare it with each of these movies. There is a weird paranormal element of this evil male entity, and the girls from Sawkill keep going missing to sate his appetite, even though he likes to appear as a little girl with a high-pitched voice... WTF. Maybe the author was going for the "creepy little girl vibe," but it came across as weird and annoying instead. So much TELLING, not much SHOWING me the story.
The story jumps around a lot between the girls and gets quite convoluted, and you always feel like you are walking in on a conversation that is halfway done, and you missed some integral element. There are urban legend ideas. They could be great... but they don't quite hash themselves out in a delivery that worked for me.
I always get so sad when I don't love a horror novel... A for effort (except for incessant man-hating), but didn't feel ready for release to the public.
2 stars for me.
