Conspirata (Cicero, #2)

I have read and thoroughly enjoyed other books by Robert Harris ... but not this one ... what I found here were far too many characters, little foundation for understanding the complicated norms and practices of Rome, and no cohesion to the story ... I was lost and did not finish ... sorry ... I think most people liked this

That’s too bad. Thank you for the review!

I can understand what you said because I tried to read the first book of the series, and gave up. I did have a bit more positive review to that one, however. Thanks for an honest review!
Sorry you didn’t like it. I don’t read much in English but Harris I enjoy. In 🇬🇧English it’s called “Lustrum” which at least has a meaning, even if it’s lost on younger generations who didn’t need Latin for university entrance. What on earth does “Conspirata” mean?
Too many names to keep track of.
Every page introduces 6 new characters. Franky, by chapter 3, I was reading it as: "Someone said to someone that someone had killed someone who is related to another someone."

I keep meticulous notes on a novel like this. However, I'm listening to it on an audiobook with my wife, when we have tea in the afternoon. The only way to update my notes is to frequently stop, which is not an option. So I need to bookmark pages on the ebook and return to them later. Not the best way to read!

It's been 5 years since I read this book, but it strikes me that an audiobook would be very difficult
