bookshelves: abandoned, try-again

In keeping with my new "rules", if it doesn't appeal move on to something that does. I was interested in the beginning, but that passed very quickly and when the Somali issue arose I began to feel it was just too much like watching the news (which I promise I get enough of). I may not have given this a fair chance, but that is OK, I have limited time and I need to find those books that speak to me.

I have another Strout on my shelf and will give that one a go soon. I did like the two of her books that I have already read. So, this one might just be the exception for me.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person Kudos to you for watching the news. News broadcasts? Newspapers? I can't even...

Sara I know, Andrea. Nothing encouraging about a newscast anymore.

message 3: by Canadian Jen (new)

Canadian Jen oh no....I bought this one last year. Hope your next one is better.

Sara Hope you like it better than I did, Jen. Can't win 'em all.

message 5: by Darlene (new)

Darlene Deluca Good to know. I really didn't like her Olive Kitteridge novel.

MomToKippy I like your new rules!

I liked Olive Kitteridge just fine and also My Name is Lucy Barton, but this one was another story for me!

Really, Gita, I just had to tell myself that any time wasted reading something I don't like is time taken away from reading something I do!

MomToKippy Exactly Sara! I've taken to throwing them across the room occasionally. Or into the trash bin. And then there is always the fireplace.

message 10: by Deyanne (new)

Deyanne So appreciate your honesty. This is on sale today and I am so grateful that I checked reviews. I am choosing to pass on this one. I, too, have limited time and want to carefully select what I will read.

Sara I do think she is a good writer, I just didn't like this one. If you haven't read Olive Kitteridge or Lucy Barton, don't let this dissuade you from them.

Marialyce I find her books are a hit or miss with me.

message 13: by Deyanne (new)

Deyanne Read Lucy Barton. I realized from your review that Burgess currently is not a good choice for me. maybe sometime.

Seems the same for me. Unfortunately, I will give up on an author if that happens to me too often. I have two of her books on my TBR that I have yet to read, so we shall see.

Yes, Deyanne, I agree that Lucy Barton is a good read. I also enjoyed Olive Kitteridge.
