(2.5?) The lack of world building is one of my main issues with this book (even though it seems like things will be explained in book 2... a full book with little world building is boring!).
I didn't love the writing and the characters felt very one dimensional.
Kinda felt like another YA dystopian world with a love triangle and an incredibly pretty main character - even after spending over 6 months isolated, underfed... and the fact that she hasn't seen herself in the mirror in 3 years... Her beauty is mentioned in pretty awkward moments.
If it wasn't for the fact that people say the series becomes way better after book 1 I would stop but I'll give the second book a try!

Curious to hear your review. I haven't read this nor do I have interest in doing so.

This fell flat for me too despite being a super quick read. I am unsure whether to keep going with the series to see what happens, so interested to hear your thoughts.
Same with Anita, I think I spent like 8 US dollars for the whole series. Waiting for your review. I think I'll like it... so maybe I just have to jump in. But I know it will still be interesting to hear your opinion.
Hahah Emily I totally get why this is not for you and I wasn't really feeling this first book too but the characters get so much more epic and you get to see a whole lot of development by the third book.
Thoughts on Tomes posted about series that are worth it so you might want to check out her video. I don't think she cared as much for the first book either but said the series gets a lot better.
I read this book when it first came out, and hated it so much. People say the other books in the series are good, but...if you want me to read books 2 & 3, write a deserving first book!
Read this book a few years ago. It was so... let's just say I can't even remember the story. Hahaha!
I'm reading this book right now and those are my exact thoughts. Like all of it. I'm listening to the audiobook at high speed to get this over with. But people keep telling me to give the other books a chance, so I don't know.
I feel you. I tried reading it I got further in it but after a while it just didn't stick with me. I didn't want to force myself to read something that I didn't like. so it ended up in the DNF zone. then I gave it away.
I've read both this and Shadow and Bone and they are so alike. Although Shadow and Bone is better. But I guess the lack of worldbuildning and shallow characters has to do with the fact that it's YA?
I just reading this book. And I agree with you 💯 the world building isn’t explained. Also the love triangle is very eye rolling.
My first fantasy book I’ve ever read.. it was pretty good way towards the end but I felt the same way 🤷🏽♀️ ... but I will give book 2 a try as well
