I KNEW IT.

In this highly predictable, yet vastly entertaining novel, we get a love story wrapped up in decadent Indian mythology.

Princess Mayavati (Maya) is a cursed person. She was born with a cursed zodiac that essentially says she walks with Death.

To save her sister Gauri, from certain death in the face of potential war, she promised her father,The Raja, to kill herself rather than marry any one man and be a catalyst for war.

When the time comes, in a whiplash quick decision, she agrees to marry a mysterious stranger, her final suitor-Amar, not knowing that he, and whathe can teach her about herself she's not change her destiny, but allows her to embrace it and all that she is.

Let me say this: I am incredibly... and I mean... incredibly harsh on books about Indian life or mythology. Because I live it, I feel like many Indian -American authors fall into the trap of making the emphasis of the Indian lifestyle overly dramatic

No, my mom does not play bhajans or hold poojas everyday, singing loudly while doing the Indian head-shake.

No, we do not eat Indian food every single day for every single meal.

No, I (or anyone I know) did not wear kurthis or Sarees or salwars to school. No one I know did. We all wore jeans like normal people.

Yes, that is a faction of the more conservation population, which is fine. but for the most part it is not our lives and it makes me cringe so hard to make most of us seem...socially inept or unable to culturally meld.

The Star-Touched Queen did an excellent job of taking Indian mythology and making it a thing of the modern times and sentiments. Maya is strong, she is willing to reflect, she believes in love, and herself. Her husband sees her as an equal. It's a story of arranged marriage that is overshadowed by a love story and independence. Indian words were not sprinkled like M&Ms, but placed tastefully where they belong and made sense.

Honestly you can guess the overall plot, but the small details will keep you going, in addition to the gorgeous poetry-like writing. Well well done, Roshani Chokshi. You win.
