This is an aggressively detailed book - everything is written with a militarist's precision. Characters aren't so much built as dissected with a cold laser. But Lem uses this to create an epic, ominous and authentic world and to ask questions about the nature of humanity that are rare in the science-fiction genre. It's a fascinating book, but not gripping nor emotionally involving.
