it was amazing
bookshelves: favorites, liburry-book, read-2015

My friend Ed was recently updating his books with reviews on here and this book popped up in my feed. It's my husband's favorite movie/book of all time and I realized that I had never picked the book up. I've watched bits and pieces of the movie in the three thousand times that my husband has watched it, but I had never experienced it first hand.
I'm gutted.
Why have I not just sat down and watched the film that was made from this book? I'm completely off my rocker.

Randle Patrick McMurphy. That guy who plays crazy to get out of a work detail. Goes into the mental hospital and completely owns it.

He gets the "inmates" to smoking, drinking, having women and fishing. He makes them back into the men that they were.
I wanted to reach over and touch the place where he was tattooed, to see if he was still alive. He's layin' awful quiet. I told myself, I ought to touch him to see if he's still alive...
That's a lie. I know he's still alive. That ain't the reason I want to touch him.
I want to touch him because he is a man.

The evil in this book. Nurse Ratched. I usually have a fond spot for the villains but this woman scares me. She has got to be one of the top baddies of all time. I still have goosebumps from her.

I've always been hit or miss on books that are called classics and that's probably why I have not tried some that now I'm beginning to reconsider. Because if they are like this one I'm definitely missing out. Thanks Ed for pointing out this most wonderful book to me.

He'd shown us what a little bravado and courage could accomplish, and we thought he'd taught us how to use it.

Vivian Haven't read the book, though the movie made me cry and depressed :/

Shelby *trains flying monkeys* I saw the movie years ago. I have crap for brains so i only remember bits and pieces.

message 3: by Vivian (new) - added it

Vivian Well, you're reading it so I'm not going to ruin it. But, wrecked me.

Wayne Barrett I loved this book. When the movie first aired, Christopher Lloyd and Danny DeVito were unknowns.

They nailed these characters. All of them did. I may break down and let the hubby watch it again so I can pay more attention. It's usually this one or "Full Metal Jacket"

Brian Is Full Metal Jacket a novel too? I love that movie. Thank you for your review. I want to read it now. This movie made one of the strongest impacts on me as a kid. Thinking back, I realize this is a very special story. I first experienced Jack Nicholson in this one too. I remember asking my Dad, "What happened to him? He's okay right? He's faking again?" I remember the big Indian with the water fountain and his mercy pillow for his only friend. Wow, what a story. I have to read this. Thanks again.

I don't know if Full Metal Jacket was based on a book. Lawd, I can quote that movie though. Lol.
This book is one of the best books to movies ever. Hope you enjoy!

Patty Excellent review!! I loved this book so much! I'll have to re-read it sometime this year. It's not nessecarily similar but have you read The Catcher in the Rye? It's another classic that is either a hit or a miss but I read the two of them around the same time and ended up loving both of them!

I have not read that one yet either. It is one I have had on my TBR forever. I'll bump it up. :)

Nick Pageant Amazing review, Shelby! I think I'll have to dig out the DVD today... and, yes, Nurse Ratched is one of the scariest baddies ever.

I think we are going to watch it too. Can't help it after this. Nurse Ratched will give me nightmares. LOL

Ɗẳɳ 2.☊ Yes, this book is excellent. Don't be scared of the classics. They're hit and miss like all the other genres. I'd hold up TKAM as my absolute favorite. I never cared much for Steinbeck; Catch-22 is pretty damn funny; loved the Count of Monte Cristo & Animal Farm as a kid; An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge is a nice little short; & The Right Stuff, if you can consider that a classic, is one of my all-time favorites.

Get to 'em!

Yes, dad!
TKAM is probably one of my top all time ever books.
One day I'm going to read them all.

Zoeytron Fantastic, Shelby. I'm in complete agreement with your take on Nurse Ratched. A real and true monster.

Carmen Great review, Shelby.

Shelby *trains flying monkeys* Zoeytron wrote: "Fantastic, Shelby. I'm in complete agreement with your take on Nurse Ratched. A real and true monster."

She is. I would have loved a couple of chapters from her point of view, but then I probably wouldn't be able to sleep at night.

Ɗẳɳ 2.☊ Btw, love the lizard tongue Nicholson. Also, Nurse Ratched freaked me the hell out, since I didn't even realize it was animated, until I had already read past that point, then she turned her head :|

As for me hating everything, you best lay off cause I just gave back to back 5 stars (well one was rounded up). And unlike some, I'm actively trying to avoid bad books. A few just sneak past my radar...grrr

Nurse Ratched will get you if you don't go back and give Red Rising five huge stars.

Ɗẳɳ 2.☊ Never gonna happen...I ain't sweatin that old birdy.

Margitte Ohhhh I am soooooo impressed with you! It is one of my all-time favorite books and movies as well. If you have time you might find a biography of Ken Kasey worth reading. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I had no clue that book existed. It sounds so good!

Since the day I saw the movie I believe Jack Nicholson was born to play McMurphy. I cannot read this book without seeing Nicholson as the main character.

He was that role. I did the same thing. I kept thinking Jack doesn't have red hair! LOL

Kelly (and the Book Boar) Thank Tom Cruise you loved this book. This may be the only dealbreaker on my entire list that EVERYONE who is my friend has to like.

Great review! Oh, and I think "modern classic" is the saving grace when it comes to me liking "smart people" books. Classic classics? Notsamuch.

Tell Nurse Ratched on him. I think he is scared of her.

Karlyflower *The Vampire Ninja, Luminescent Monster & Wendigo Nerd Goddess of Canada (according to The Hulk)* Hell, despite an undying love for the movie "The Princess Bride" I didn't even know it was a book til I was an adult! I am terrible at this whole being a bookaholic thing.

That's how I felt when I found out this was a book before it was a movie...

David, that book was not one of the best book to movie ones. The movie blows it away. :)
