really liked it
bookshelves: kids, poetry

I cannot find the correct edition - ours is ancient! I adore Wynken, Blinken and Nod and "How do you like to go up in the air, up in the air so high, oh I do think it is the...., ie the Swing song! They are my favorites.

Barb H You have brought back some lovely memories for me.

Chrissie Isn't it strange how children's book mean so very much and never disappear from our heads? We have this ancient old black volume that my Mom had. On the front is a picture of a gray and green garden.

Barb H I have a yellowed and worn Mother Goose book. Unfortunately, I wrote on some pages. I have never parted with this tattered volume

Chrissie Oh, I have an ancient Mother Goose Tale too, It is a big book(about a foot high) with a yellow trim around the edges and a picture centered in the middle. The background is splotchy beige white. Could it be the same book?! I have it in Sweden so I cannot get better info.... This too was my Mon's book.

There is nothing wrong with writing and doing things to books, I think. I have colored in pictures of books I had as a child and then read to my kids. My Charlott's Web has every page trimmed at the bottom. I thought it was too messy originally with ragged edges and decided I should straighten them. ... Now it is crooked in another way, but who cares. It means I loved the book and wanted to personalize it.

I always undeline in and write in the margins of my books.

Barb H The markings of an adult differ from the scribbles of a child! Many of my pages are unsightly. My Mother Goose is a standard size, thick book with a faded blue cover. I'll have to check the publication date.

Chrissie Mine isn't so thick but very large, like 1/2 of a tabloid newspaper.

Barb H I am sure mine must be older than yours, because I was reading mine befire you were born! I will check the date!

Chrissie Barbara, I am NOT young either! I have 4 grandchiidren, and both books were my Moms......

BTW I would rather see a book with some child's scribbles in it that one in mint condition. The former was USED and that is the purpose of books.

Barb H Well stated on all counts!

I finally checked the publication-. It was published by MacMillan in 1924!!! I assure you that was well before my birth. Now I wonder where, how and when it was obtained.

Chrissie I will try and remember to check mine when I am in Sweden...... I asked my Mom where she got ours and she has forgotten but probably her Aunt who was continually giving her and her brothers books. It will be fun to check. My Mom is born in 1925. Are you going to try and find out where you got your book? that would be quite fun to know!

Barb H I'm sure I'll never find its source. My parents are long gone and my 3 brothers don't seem to have memories for such details. Perhaps it came from one of my aunts or uncles.

Chrissie That is to bad! If my Mom got her book from her Aunt, then it will say that in the front cover. I will check when we are in Sweden.

Chrissie Barbara, I checked the date of my book! It is from 1905! Pretty amazing.

Barb H That is amazing! And I thought mine was old!

Chrissie My Mom got it from her Aunt who was a school teacher. The weird thing is that I have two of them. The second someone else bought, and although it looks exactly the same, both with illustrations by Jessie Wilcox Smith, it is published in 1947. Books are fun. Do you remember the Swing Song? That is my favorite.

Have I told you about this book: Fanny Stevenson: A Romance of Destiny? I want to read it!

Barb H So my book is in the middle!

I don't recall the Swing Song. Perhaps ifyou remind me...

The book about Fanny sounds intriguing. It is so interesting to read about those women behind the men, who had so much to offer in their own right.

Chrissie How do you like to go up in the air, up in the air so high, oh I do think it is the most marvelous thing ever a child can do. Up in the air and over the wall till you can see so far. Rivers and trees and cattle and fileds ..., or something like that!!!! It has been years since I read that. You are asking miracles of my feeble brain to remember the exact words. :0) I also had this poem in another book published by Plattnum and Munk. THAT was a great publisher of children's books! It doesn't exist anymore. I wonder why we have two copies. My Mom doesn't know either.

I simply must get ahold of the book about Fanny's life with Robert Louis Stevenson.

Barb H That rhyme does sing to me! It sounds familiar!

Tiffany I'm in the same position. Going to try looking in other places. With 165 other editions, it might take a while.

Chrissie Tiffany, big job ahead of you.
