Okay, I really struggled through this book. I loved reading from the perspective of a woman in the Old Testament. That part was great. I have been told many-a-time that I am an individual who CHOOSES to be naive and for that reason, I didn't like the way the author portrayed some of the characters--some of my heroes--from the OT. There were just some disturbing things in there--like Jacob masturbating--(there is worse than that in the book, believe me) that I thought were AWFUL. In the end, Joseph is portrayed as a selfish, illiterate tyrant who hated his younger brother Benjamin and who willingly slept with Potipher's wife. Terrible! So for the most part, I just didn't like it. I did manage to read the whole thing, and enjoyed reading about Dinah making the most of her life and incorporating things she learned from her mothers. I loved getting to know Zilpah and Bilhah better..but that's where it ended. If you are at all familiar with the OT, don't read this book!

Hey, my mother-in-law gave me this book and I really enjoyed it as well. Great insights into the lifestyle and culture of the era and from a woman's point of view.
Yeah, I felt the same as you on so many of those things . . . particularly disgusted at the portrayal of Jacob and Joseph. It was disappointing, too, because so many other aspects of the book were such an interesting take on this OT story. Overall, I agree with your review.
See, some of that is exactly why I *enjoyed* the book. It made those people all the more human for me. I had never understood the part of the OT where Dinah's brothers go kill her husband. It's like 2 or 3 lines in the OT. The book helped it make more sense, even if I still didn't like it. It brought a new perspective on other things too.....I had always thought that God said "Worship only me" and the whole clan said "Okay." But in reading the book, you can see how it was an evolutionary process, with the women holding on to teaching from their past. It really struck me as a testament to the strength of women, even those who are oppressed and not supposed to be strong.
I only managed to get through a quarter of this book and then shoved as quick as I could back into the return slot at the library. I don't think the author understood any of the bible from all of the reviews I've read and from the small amount of the book I got through.
